Subsequent EduoatiobAl LSBSOSS ih Hoksc Tahixq—Howto Subdue a Kicsixa Horse. A kicking bone Is Uie worst kind of a hone to undertake to subdue, and more dreaded by man than any other; indeed, it would not be too mnoh to say that they are more. dreadedihan all the other bad and vicious hones pat together. Ton often hear the from hone jockeys themselves, “I don’t care what he does so he doesn’t kick.” Now a kicking hone can be broken from kicking in harness, and effectu ally broken, too, though it will require some lime to manege him safely ; but penevere and patience by this rule will doit effectually. When you go to harness a hone that you know nothing about, if you want to know whether he is a kicking hone or not, youcan accertaln that fact by stroking him on ths flank whore the hair lies upward, which yon con discover easily on any horse. Just stroke him down with the ends of your fingers, and if he does not swioh his tail, and shake his head, and lay back his ears, or some of these, you need not fear biskicking. If he does any or all of these, set him down for a kicking horse, and watch him closely. When you harness a kicking bone, have a strap abont three feet long, withabnckle on one end , have several holes punched in the strap; wrap U once around his leg just above the hoof lift up his foot touching his body; put the strap around the am of his leg, and buckle it; then yon go behind him, and pull book on the traces; you must not fear his kicking while his foot is up, for it is impossible for him to do it. Prac tice him in this way awhile, and he will soon learn to walk on three legs. Ton should' not hitoh him np until you have practiced him with his leg up two or three times, pulling on the traces, and walking him along. After you have practised him afew times iu this way, toko op his foot as directed; hitch him to something, and cause him to pall it a short distance ; then lake him out; caress him svery.lime you work with him. Ton will find it more convenient to fasten np his left fore foot,, because this is the side you are on. After yon have had him hitched up once or twice, you ehonldgeta long strap; put U around footas before dlrected(above the hoof and below the pastern-joint-;) put it through a ring in yonr harness; take hold of it in yoor hand; hitch him np gently, and if ha makes a motion to kick, yon can poll np his foot and preveot it. Ton should use this strap until you have him broken from kicking, which will not take long. You should hitchakiokiug horse by himself; you can manage him better in. this way than to bitch him by the aids of another horse. BOW TO BBBAX.A 00X91 TROX SOABOtO. It is an established rale in philosophy that thero is not an effeot without a cause, and if so, there must be some cause for tho scaring of a horse. The hone scares either from imagina tion or from pain. Now, itis a law ofhisnatnre, that if you will eonvlnoe him that any object will not hurt him, there is no danger of his scar ing at it, no matter how frightful it may be in appearance.. To exemplify this, take a horse that is very eaisly scared at an umbrella; take that hone into a tight stable, where you can have his attention; take him by the bridle, and hold the umbrella in yonr hand; when he firit looks at it, he will be afraid of it, and if he taold, he would soon bo odtof its reach;' but hold it in yonr hand, let him look at U and feel it with his nose a few minutes, and then you cab open and shot it as yon please, occasionally let ting him-feel it with his nose, and soon he will care nothing about it In the same manner you can brook any horse from scaring at things that may look frightful to him, logs, stumps by, the roadside, or any thing that yon may wish to earry on him. «f yon wish to make a trial of this theory, just take a horse into the stable, and let Mm examine the frigthfol object a few minutes after his mode of examining things, and yon will be perfectly satisfied. We have tried hones that would not suffer you to take an umbrella on them shut, and in fifteen minutes you could open and shot it at pleasure, and they wIU pay no attention, to it. There is- something Waller in the hone (though i< is became heJUs not the fault* j'of reasoning.) You can lafcpn object that he; is afraid of, take it ooly on tat aide, let him ex amine it on that tide only; d4,not let the other eye see it; he will be.brokan on'ofie aide, soon as the othereye'beholds it, Vltl be afraid until he looks at it and touches it with his nose; then be will be broken on both sides. BOW TO TKAOB ABOBSB TO FOLLOW TOU. Take him Into a large stable or shed, take hold of the bridle or halter-wiih jour left hand, have a long switch or whip in your right; after caressing him a>liule pot your right hand over his shoulder with the whip extending back so that you ean touch him up with the whip applied gently around his hind lege. Start op a little, give him a gentle tap with the whip, walking him around the stable, saying to him, "Come along bog f* or call him by his name, taking him around the atible a few times, holding him by the bridle. After you have taken him around in this way a few times, you caw let go of his bridle, saying, t f Com* atony bog," and if he stop tap him with the whip gently, 'and in a short timehe wililearn that you want him to follow you; then gradually get before him, , hare him to follow around the stablo. in this way a few minutes, then he will understand- what you wont him to do. Aftor you have taught him to follow iu the stable lake him into the stable lot, loam him to follow you in that a few minutes, then you can take hixa Into tho pubHo road or street, and he will follow yon there, and in a short time hfr will follow you wherever you want him to. You should often pat him, and caress him, and give him lb understand that you do not intend to hurt him, and he will soon like to follow you. Men often get their boms afraid of them and keep so, and it is their nature to keep out of danger when they apprehend it, after their manner of arriviog at conclusions. The way horses arrive at coaolasfonfl is generally from experience. now TO TKACH A BOBSI vTO BTAHD WITHOUT mrcaiSQi After you have taught ybur horsd to follow you, stand him. in the centre of the stable, begin at his head to gentle him, gradually working backward. If hemovesgive him '* gentle cut with the whip, and put him baok same spot from which he started. If he stands caress him as before, andconlinue geottlinghim in this way, until you can get around him wilhou mak ing him move. Keep walking around him, in* creasiog.your pace, and .only touchhim occasion ally. Every time he moves put him hack into the same place; go still farther from him, if hemoves givebim'a cut with your whip, place himback in theeame place. If he slandtgo to him frequently aad caress him. Do not lethim stand too long, but make him follow you around in the stable. Then stand him In another plaeeandprooeed as before. After yoa have him eo that he will stand in the stable, take him out in the lot and plaee him there, and la a short time you can place him any where without hitching. You should not practice him longer than half an hour at a time. OHBALXISa. This is a volume of six hun dred pages, containing ths whole Bible in the Latin langnsge. *lt belongs to ths Rev. Dr. Doffield of this city. The book is entirely made of vellum, and the printing is all done by hand with a pea tad ink.. Every letter is per fect in its shape, and cannotbe distinguished by any form, fromithe printed let tera'of the present day. The shape of the let ter is of coarse different from those now in nse, bat in no other case can they be diiliogqished from printed matter. The immense amount of labor may be conceived from the fact there are two columns on each page, each of wbioh lacks only about' six letters of being as wide as the columns of this paper. They will average sixty lines to the column. The columns numbering 1,200, we have about, 70,000 lines in the whole book. Nothing short of alifetime could accom plish each a work, The date of. this book is A. D. 9SO. It was consequently made 660 yean before printing was Invented, and is 928 years old. There is probably nothing on thisoontlnent, inthe shape of a book, equal to il in age. The vellum on whioh it Is printed is of the finest kind, and is made of the skin of yonng lambs and kids, dressed and nibbed kith pomioe stone nntil it is very thin. Itis somewhat thicker .than com mon paper, being a medium between that add the drawing paper now in nse. Tho veins in the skin are distinotlyjvisible in many places. A pencil mark was drawn by the operator to gnide the construction of each line. .Many pa ges have these lines visible on the whole sur face, no effort having been' made to rub them but, Two lines running npand down dividethe columns with mathematical accuracy. At the beginning of eaoh chapter, highly colored or namental letters are placed. These are the only mark's of the division of chapters. Thero are no subdivisions into verses, the chapters run ning through in one paragraph to the end, and ho descriptive headings. This valaable relio was presented to Dr. Duf fleld by Lewis Cass, Jr., our Minister Resident at Rome. He procured it of a Greek monk, who brought it from the Greek Convent of St. Catharine, at the foot of Mount Sinai. Mr. Cass befriended this monk, who was in trouble ; and he, in return, presented him with the volume whioh we hue described. Aeoordiog to his story, it is the work of one of the anoientmonk Scribes in the convent -above named. -When it became known that Mr. C&ss was parting with it, and that it was going out of the country, the round sum of $3,000 was offered him for it by the monks of the city of Rome. This was of course refused, for the pleasure Of placing so inestimable a relic in the hands of one who can appreciate Us value so well as our learned divine Dr. Duffield. At the time of the late fire In the Doctor’s house, this book was thrown into : the street among others, and came very near be tnglost. It was picked np on ths sidewslkby one who recognized It as one of Dr. Dnffield’s most valuable relics, and preserved U. —Detroit Ftu Prut. That $50,000. —Our readers will remember that daring ibe Lecompton contest last winter it was said that $50,000 was raised to aid in the passage of the Iniquity. Mr. Cox was selected to trace out the matter, but suddenly became mom as an oyster. Bow is it Samuel? The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette says: I observe Mr. Coxandothera of his Democrat* io colleagues in the Ohio delegation, who sig*. nallied their treachery te principles voluntarily professed, by the basest and most abject per* sonal humiliation, recanting, - denying and eat* Ing up every word they had uttered against Lecompton, and now striving to commend them selves at home, by willfully misrepresenting the purpose, object and aim of the English swindle. There was bat one opinion here of their con duct at the time, and there ought to be one throughout the country—which was that they surrendered to the Administration, under per suasions and influences, that should deprive them of all confidence, now or hereafter. And it may be well to recall to Mr. Cox’* , attention a circumstance of which he has cognisance, that has never yet been satisfactorily explained. When the anlLLecompton members were in the habit of meeting together and conferring freely, it vras believed to be ascertained, with reasonable certainty, that, besides the patron age and contracts whloh had been used to carry Lecompton through the Bouse, a fund of $60,000 •in money was available for purposes of persua sion. That faotcame to Lhe knowledge of Judge Douglas and others, and at a. conference subse quently field, Mr. Cox was assigned the duty of persuing an investigation, which had already been partially opened. From the time be was detailed on this service, the avenues of infor. mation wfcre suddenly dosed, and shortly after became one of the most pliant instruments of the Lecomptooites in counter marching the dis affected who had followed Dougina back into tbe Administration ranks. Perhaps he may be able to explain that little episode to the satis faction of his constituents. Send us no more doughfaces like Cox and his confederates, who have exhibited neither courage, nor uprightness nor one particle of principle. - So Mr. Cox was appointed by the Douglas men in Congress to smell out corruption. He smelled it, and liked the odor of it so mnch that he forget to return to the pore atmosphere of anti Lecbmptonism. His- easy virtue was un dermined, and he now glorifies the English jug gle, which he once pronounced the "meanest bill" that had been introduced into Congress. It is always pitiable to view 1 a lapse from virtue, but It Is most melancholy to seo a.mah clothed with power by a confiding people betray them into the hands of their enemies. JHtiaical.
