At tb« oorner of Charles street and Elizabeth place stood the well-known factory belonging to Madame Cotoo the pyrotechnic artist to tha Royal Gardens' Yaoxholl, and at the opposite corner of the street was the building belonging to Mr. Gib son, late Cannon, oho a well known firework maker. The present belfig the most busy part of tho London and snbarban seasons, both fac tories were more than usually occupied in pre paring those dangerous projectiles. Madame Coton haring received the contract for Vauxhall Gardens, and had been slnco Monday week pre paring an extra supply for that establishment; and last evening, about half past C o’clock, Madame Coton was In the building, but in what part does not seem quite clear; there were also a young woman and a little girl np stairs, and a boy about 13 yean of age, named David Bray, in the tin-room in the front kitohen; the broth er of this boy was in what is termed “the color ed firs department,”* in the back kitohen. All of a sudden the latter cried out, ‘Ob, the red fire is alight!'and immediately rushed out of the build ing. The brother followed, but before he could get to the top of the stairs he became encircled in flames, and we regret to say that although he managed to get out of the boildiog, he was fearfully If not fatally injured. He was at once removed to the surgery of Dr. Donahoo, No. 8 Westminster road, nearly facing, where that gentleman did all that was possible that humanity or surgical skill could devise, bat while he was attending to this sufferer, the flames reached the different rooms, which be came ignited, when a terribio ovcot occurred. It ought,-however, to be hero stated that the Waterloo-road and Sonlhwark-bridge-road en gines, together with that of the West of England office, had just arrired, and Lund, the tnrncock of the Lambeth Waterworks, had drawn a main for the supply of the engines; but there being another nearer the premises of Madame Colon, he was in the act of drawing the plug, when the whole boildiog, except a portion of the external walls, was blown into the air, as well as across the full extent of the wide road, and at rite same time rockets, Catharine wheels, and the more powerful description ; of fireworks exploded, scattering everything used in the business in every direction, knocking down firemen and, it is said, 100 men, women and ohildren. The flames laid hold of Thomas Dunn, tho turncock,, burnt his hat offhis head, and so severely in jured him that it is feared he is mortally hurt.— At the samo Instant, (he rockets,as they ex ploded, half spent of their destructive contents, (Shot into the_ premises of Mr. Gibson, and tho stock of fireworks In that place also became ig nited, and before Mrs. Gibson had limo to es cape she was also fearfully burnt, for some minutes thejfiremen and police hardly know what to do, for explosions continued to follow each other until everything in eaeh building of ex plosive charaoter was totally destroyed. Just before the first explosion took place, five or six persons were at the first-floor window of Madame Cotan’s premises, and while they were making an attempt to enter, the . combustibles exploded, and they were all blown to the ground. It is hardly necessary to say that they were nil badly Injured. In less than half an hour after the outbreak, not fewer than 00 sufferers had been removed to Dr. Donahoo’s snrgery.— Among the most serious cases, and one that demands especial mention, was that of Mr T Bonham, a livery-stable keeper, of No. 9 Obe lisk yard, who ran to the front of the house and rescued a liltlo girl, but had no sooner done so than a rocket struck him on the head, blew the child out of his nrms, and they were both serf ously injured. At tho same time, Mr. Barnard of No. 6 Gibson street, Lambeth, was passing along the road in alight cart with four other persons, and so great was the force of the explo lon, and so fierce the shower of rookets and , pieces cf the roof, that they were all blown down in the cart, and Mr. Barnard much injoredabout the legs. Mr. Patterson, a licensed victualer, was surrounded with burning rockets, and his legs were in consequence much burnt. [From Tho Loniea Tim**, 14th.] The accounts published yesterday convoy but a faint idea of the mischief done to property and tho vast number of persons who were injur ed by this disastrous event.
