General J* Ki Moorhead. [Prom tba BrowMTins Gipper.] This gentleman has been nominated by the Republicans of the Pittsburgh; District, as their Candidate for Congress ; and ;although we lire a few milewwithout his district, yet there are abundant reasons why we, in adjoining Districts, should feel ah interest in his election, and hence why a few comments from as, uponhishlstory, his character, and the probable elfectof his elec tion upon the interests andbuslness' prosperity of his own, and the neighboring districts, should not be deemed an officious Intermeddling with the affairs of oar neighbors. Pittsburgh is the bub of a huge business wheel, of which the surrounding Counties are the felloes. While the motive power of busi ness prosperity, keeps' the hub" in turning mo tion, the felloes must allgo round Vith it; but ir its evolutions be the mire of bu siness stagnation, its circular wnrnjßhdiDga are sure to come in -"for their share in the general catastrophe. And General Moorhead, there fore Is not only tho candidate of the immediate district in which'he has boon officially, nomina ted, but, relatively, of those districts whoso closo yr.ni.u.iy especially connect, nod identify their busing thrill and operations with those i of his own. But there aro other and moro special reasons why the citizens of Fayette, of Washington, and of Greene, particularly, should, and why those of his own party in those counties, with out a single exception, so far as we can learn, do desire (he.election of Gen. Moorhead ;. and why, also, they would lament the occurrence of any movement in hia own district, oalonlated to dislraet or divide the great party who have fair ly, and according to the usages of that parly, placed"hLaiin nomination. The prominent connection of Gen. Moorhead, ! for some years past,'irith the slackwatcr navi gation of our noble'Stonongahcla opon the navi gable condition of which the interests of large portions of the aboVe eoonties, so much depend, has often brought him in personal contact with our eitlzens along the river, who not only re member with gratitude, hisenergjr, his prompt ness, and his liberality, in improving and keep ing open and in order, this important channel of their commerce and intcr-oommanicalion, but they respect and admire him for his gen tlemanly bearing, his social qualities, and his unbending integrity ; and moreover, as they be- Ucvcy not without reason, that, in the event of his election, his shrewdness, energy, and perse verance, would enablejiim to secure the estab lishment at Pittsburgh, of certain governmen tal instiutions now in cnnUmplUrion, - thus' add ing vastly to her business thrift and activity, and necessarily radiating to their own localities, so would they regret, as a personal misfortune, the defeat of Gen. Moorhead, and the success of orffc to whose tact and influenza'ia this behalf they could not hope to look wituthe same degree of confidence. N These are some of the'particular reasons given by those living in the imnfodlnte vlciutly of Gen. Moorhead's district, why they desire that gentleman's election, and as to ourself individually as ibo Editor of a Republican paper, wo claim (he right of speaking to, and, under certain circumstances, of advising our subscribers, a large number of whom abide in | the General's district. 1 But are there not strong and general reasons, why, not only the Republicans of his own dis trict and neighborhood, but of the wholc Stale nay of the whole country, shon'.' 1 -’dire election of the. nomioeo of a largo, iulclligent, and regularly constituted Contention whoever that candidate should be. Should not every Re publican he governed in his support of a candi date.by tho voice of a Convention which himself bad a band in constructing, so long os that is the mode adopted for embodying bis party will? else what the use of a Convention at nil? If it is powerless to unite and concentrate the party vole and influence upon its rcgularlynomioated candidates, then dispense Villi it; otherwise, let all acknowledge and obey its mandates. It always has been, and always will be the case, that more or less disappointment end disaffec tion on the part of Yival candidates and their friends, wilt follow a regular party nomination, attended with bickerings, heart-burnings,crimi nations, threats and secessions, which sometimes result in thebringing out ofcandidatesioopposi sioa to the regular nomlnatious, nod thereby giving the victory to the common enemy, through unwise and impotent party divisions. _ Bo when the Jews were beseiged' within tho walls of their aooient oily, ioslead of uoiting for tlio common defense, they fell to butchering each other, and thus became an easy prey to the ravages of their invaders. Is such & course the port of wisdom or of folly ? Who ever knew a candidate thus brought out, b|jr a few disaffected, to succeed against the regular nomioeo of a full and fairly con stituted Convention, or at all .events, against tho oandidate of the party opposed to both the regalar and the irregular nominee? because the tendenoy of tho splits and divisions, is almost always sure to result in a triumph of the legiti mate candidate, or, of the common enemy, and at the same time, to wrest from the anlhors of such a suicidal policy, whatever party influence or popularity they may have possessed, and the subsequent recovery of which, is seldom, if ever, effected, even by years of political atonement and repentance. Such disorgani rera should learn wisdom from experience. For all these several reasons we exceeding ly regret to observe on the part of a few hither to good and trae Republicans in and about the city of a movement which, whatev er its object, oaa have no other tendency than, to some oxtent, to injure, perhaps, tho Repub lican Ticket, though it cannot defeat Gen. Moor-1 head, os his election seemsa foregone conclusion which no counteracting effort can be tnado suf ficiently potent to prevent. This dUaffecllonof a few individuals, is not, as we are happy to leans, owing to any personal or political objec tion to Gen. Moorhead, nor to any want of con fident in bis moral integrity, his party-fidelity, or his entire ability tb discharge the duties of the important and responsible position to which his friends are seeking to elevate him. Theso lUtlo counter movements, howover, are by no means, of sufficient potency and magni tude to even reduce materially, Gen. Moorhead's majority.wcrethattheobject, from what it would otherwise be. Tho Ptopi^ know and appreciate him, and we find by mingling and oonverstog with those of his own district, that his support ers at the polls, will not be confintl exolnsivly to the party who have placed, him in nomina tion. ’ ®?i)Dlsttrs. .rostra a. neuaxi B. No ooe therefore bos a right to envy his present position, and no ooe will, when he looks 1 into the history of the man, which though somewhat personally familiar with, it U not our purpose to write. This muob, how ever, we may bo permitted to say; that'there are those among us who remember-him as the faithful anti trust worthy-boy, filling the capa city of a tanner's apprentice;. thon the energetic and -industrious, young man, entering upon the busy, scenes and active business of life, with a capital which consisted principally, in a good name, correct habits, and an unsnlUed reputa* tion|or honor and integrity; and subsequently, the estimable man, ihetiberal citUeh, the exem plary Christian, dispensing hit charities to the worthy recipient of Us bounty with a warm heart and a prodigal hand, and largely contrib uting of Uf substance, to all objeofs looking to promotion andadvsneementof the public good. Such was and such is, Gen. J. K. [(torn tbs Mark Lane Express, Jnue 28’h.} The weather during another week haa .been of the most favorable character for pushing on the wheat crop, and it has made great progress. The‘blooming has gono on admirably,, under a suitoble temperature, and with no injurious breexes to hurt it la tho least.' Tho thormometer has ranged frnm 80 degs. to 85degs, mostly with a variable wind—occasionally north-cast, and then rounded to the southwest—with little rain generally, but occasionally thunder storms in some localities have been experienced. These, and the previbus storms, have occasioned nu merous application to the Hail Insurance Offioe, and a great increase of business has been the result. The more generally" this is adopted so much the better for the agriculturists, for when the heat is almost tropical, it generally follows that hailstorms are more prevalent than in or dinary seasons. Then is the time to effect in suranco not already effected. The cost Is ex tremely trifling, and is soon recovered; the least mischief to tho crop always accomplishes this. From all the accounts we can collect, with a| continuance of the present favorable weather, I it is supposed that the Talavern wheat will be ready for reaping in the early districts by Mon-1 day the 19th July. If any of our numerous readers think it will be ready sooner, inform a-1 tlon will be acceptable. Up to this point wehaTe no complaints worthy of notice as to this crop. I The accounts are universally good, the ground J having been well covered. The heat haa not j been prejudicial, whilst in the hotter climates, such as the south ol' France, Italy and Algeria, 1 there ore great fears that (he yield will be de-1 ficient, and as harvest in those countries is now in full progress, we shall soon know tho result. New wheat appeared in the American markets an tho 6th instant, but no mention- was made of quality. It would appear their crops are pro mising, as liberal shipments have latterly been made for the United Kingdom; and these will ar rive on the western coast just before our own farmers will be ready to bring out this year’s growth. Prices, of course, will bo affected thereby, If all goes*on woll with the harvest; but until tho result of (hat is known, thero will probably be no more forced salos made. The pres eulJow rotes are considered far from suf- I ficienllyencouraging io induce the farmers to ! bring out stocks. j , In Franco, accounts vary aioco the rains, the south, the center, and the southern environs of Paris have partially sustained injury. : The* Rye in these parts was being reaped; but Wheat’ would not be ready before the lOih or 15th of July, which is about a fortnight earlier than the average of seasons. Northern Europe has con tinued complaining, the yield of Rye promising but little, and the Wheat less (ban at one time expected. - £ Fat Salaries. —Henry Ward Beecher, says a !
