In 1849 there were returned to the office bore 621 letters addressed to Senor Jose de Alvear, and containing $3 each. In 1850, there were 958 letters returned addres sed to Dr. R. M. Weisselhoff, and containing $1 each. The noted firm of " Dashall & C 0.," of Chicago, hod letters returned here, in 1856, con taining the large stun of $3,646; and the firm of ' W. .1. Buck C C 0.," of the same place, were refused the delivery of 250 leUers, which, at the Dead Letter Office, were found to contain $683. The whole of this money thus seized upon by the Post Office Department has been returned to the parties inclosing it, but at a heavy cost of labor to the Government. When will the Amer ican people cease to be humbugged I—N. Y. Trlh. Just now the all absorbing topic is the ap proaching wheat harvest, and the prospect for a corn crop. We have made diligent enquiry in this region, and as yet hear of but very alight indications of rust in the wheat, and, except in the bottoms where the growing crop has been drowned out, the prospect in fair for an abund ant yield. From the beet information we can obtain, the area planted in wheal. In Tippecanoe, and Carroll and Warren counties, is above the average of previous years. Oats, rye and bar ley, in this county, which, up to the middle of April gave promise of a extraordinary yield, have been greatly damaged by the continual wet weather, and will not exceed halt a crop. The prospect for corn, the great staple of the Wabash Valley ie blue enough. The heavy rains and disastrous floods have prevented farmers from getting lathe crop. A large area had been planted in good aeseon, but the delugeof water on the highlands, converted each furrow into a young torrent, while the inundation of the bot- Ir= lyil 611:71; • - • torn lands was equally disastrous in drowning out the sprouting groin. Other fields, which had been plowed, but not planted-were beaten solid by the rain, and were left worse condition than before breaking up.,. Pee*lettallY we Sad a farm, perhaps one in ten, an exception to this rule. The past week has been one of great ac tivity among the farmers--all the force they could command has been employed in planting corn. We hear of one instance where a wife and two half grown daughters, of proverbial industry in their household duties, but unused to field labor were engaged from Wednesday morning last un til Friday night—ten hours each day, in drop ping corn. Each of them did a man's work.— That corn ought to grow and yield abundantly. A gentleman from Cincinnati, who took a abort drive into the country yesterday, informs us that in a number of fields .be saw farmers . . busily engaged in planting, in seeming forget fulness that it was the Sabbath. All things considered—looking the future and its chances fairly in the face, it is not propable that this section of the Wabash will yield more than half a crop of corn, and it will require fa• vorable growing weather and lazy frosts to se cure even that. The prospects in other parts of the State is more battering.—Lalayeas Cour ier, 21,t. WHEAT IN ILLINOIS.—We learn from a gentle man just in from Illinois, wbo has had good op portunities for observation in Madison, Macon pin and Sangamon counties, that the wheat crop never appeared more promising. Many fields are ready for the cradle, and before the week is out many bundreds - of acres will be harvested. It stands erect, even full headed, and in some instances only touched by rust or smut. We learn that some of the farmers in Madison, who have already cut their wheat, that the yield is not less than twenty-five bushels to the acre.— So far as we can learn the number of sores is unusually large, and the market will be most abundantly supplied. • In the counties named corn promises little in comparison with what is needed, and what in early spring was expected. Some farmers were diligently engaged last week in planting, with the hope of making a crop. If the frosts bold off in September, their hopes will be realized, otherwise, not. The, army worm has attacked some fields of wheat, but it is •supposed, to be beyond the reach of Injury. The grass Jammu spots looks well, but the worm has committed sad depredations on some fields. The exces sive wet weather has not been so favorable to grass, as some presumed it would be, and in portions of Sangamon, we are informed the crop will be lees than an average.—St. Louis Republican, 22d. DICKENS Aso me ALLEaan TBDUBLIS.—The busy tongue of Scandal will after all make out but little of the alleged domestic difficulties of Charles Dickens. The simple etats of the case is that husband and wife have separated, and hale agreed so Co live. There has been little fuss • about the matter, except by impertinent outsiders and scandal-mongers. Mr. Dickens finds that his own peace reunires a separation, and he hue very properly punned the convic tions of his judgment. lie le a sensible man. . . If tho world, whin it finds itself similarly situ ated—and such is often the case—would pursue a like course there would be a great. =ay more happy days and warm hearts than is the case. The good reputation of Mr. Dickens is by no moans compromised in this matter. lie should not he held responsible for what is said of him by those who are given to tattle and falsehood. The hold ho has upon the regard of mankind will not bo injured by the present transient dif ficulty, since be is now just what he always has been—a true Man and great Writer.—Baton Bee. Successror. Starzsmassurr.—Kellwood, in his "Memoirs," speaking of the invincible Ar mada, says:—"lt is now a well known truth that. Sir Francis Walsi'ngham, (then Secretary of State,) upon notice that the King of Spain had written a letter to the Pope, with an account of the true design of his mighty preparations and to beg his blessing upon it, got a copy of this latter out of the Pope's cabinet by the help of a priest, his spy, and had •thenco the first certain intelligence of the designed Spanish in vasion ; and that, thereupon, that consummate statesman prevented it for a whole year, by procuring our merchants to gather up the chief bills of the bank of Genoa, and to draw the money out of it just as Ring Philip had ordered bills upon that bank to set idateet out to sea, which being, through necessity, protested, there was no remedy but patience, and to wait the arrival of his Plata fleet front the Indies for the necessary supplies." MAIL FACILITIMS ow MlB3olllL—Prom a state ment in the St. Louis Republican, it appears that the Postmaster General has just added 2,244 miles of additional mail transportation in that State, viz: 1,485 miles by coach, and 759 f miles by horse. The cause of this great par tiality to the Missourian' is developed in the following paragraph from the Reintlikin : "It shows the fidelity, if evidence wars wa r , ling, with which the memberit of Congress f rom this State have attended to their duties, and also, the influence which tfug_hime exercised with theddliiiifaratimln Amex of .Katusas, well known to many of our readers, was in town yesterday. He is en route for Washington. He thinks that the troubles in the vicinity of Fort Scott are not yet settled, and that there will he more blood shed. He reports crops as looking very fine, and corn much better and more forward than in Illinois. He says that it did not rain half so much in Kansas as in this Slate, and as the face of the country is undulating, rolling prairie, water runs off readily, and does not remain on the surface to drown out the crops as on our own dead-level prairies. Emigration is pouring into the Terrttory, but not so fast as last year.. It is kept back by the prevalence of the hard times all over the States. Next year an avalanche of emigration to the West, may bo anticipated. He was present two days at the Lane trial, He thinks that Lane will be bound over; after • wards tried and acquitted on the plea of justifi able homicide; but that, politically, he is ru ined in Kansas. Ile thinks that Lane will leave the Territory after he has had his trial. TERMS 1 ME. CHITIT.NDEN'S DECEPTION AT CINC.INNATI ABD Covtacrort.—Hon. John J. Crittenden ar rived at Cincinnati on Saturday, and was receiv ed with ardent demonstration of esteem by the people of that city. A number of citizens met him at the depot, and escorted him to the Spen cer House, when he was addressed in compli mentary terms by Hon. Thomas Corwin, to which Mr. Crittenden replied in an eloquent and deeply earnest speech. Daring the afternoon Mr, Crittenden was waited upon by a large number of the citizens of Cincinnati, including Gov. Chase, and at o'clock he was taken in charge by a committee from Covington, Ky., and (tarried over to that city. There he was met, by the whole people of Covington, who turned ant to honor the distin guished Senator, Judge Kincarde made a wel come speech, to which Mr. Crittenden replied at some length, and in an eloquent manner. Much of his speech was political. He fore shadowed an union of all the elements of oppo sition to the present Administration. He said if such an union took place, there Would be no contest; the result was a foregone conclusion. ATITI-LICOMPTON AfEETING AT EASTON.—An enthuaiastio meeting of the citizene of Easton, Pa, opposed to the Administration, was held in that town on Friday evening last, at which Dr. Samuel Saudi presided. Eloquent addresses were delivered by ex-Governor Reeder, Hon. H. D. Maxwell, and others. The following was among the resolutions adopted Ruotoed, That while the Administration has been straining every nerve to accomplish its ne farious purposes in reference to Kansas, and to secure extravagant appropriations for needless and iajndicions uses, merelylo reward its tools and followers, it has wilfully and grossly neglect ed its plain duty in omitting to enact a just sys tem of imposts for the increase of the national revenue, and the protection of American manu facturers and labor, and that a time when every important interest in the country loudly demands the aid of that system greatly suffers for want of it. LIOIPINVIO Runs AND GAN PlPE:l.—Sunday afternoon New Raven was visited with a severe thunder storm. The lightning struck the Wor , caster Place Church, sensibly affecting a lady in the choir. Prof. Olmstead and the architect carefully examined the course of tne electricity, and agree that the charge descended the rod to the level of the gas pipe in the wall, when a part of It left the rod and found its way to the earth by way of the meter, and thence to the main gas pipes of the city. The excellent conducting medium which these pipes afford makes them powerful conducting competitors for the dis charging function of a lightning rod, and thug when the rod is nearly or fully charged to ita ntmoet, lbe charge will divide itself between the twootocording to a well known principle in electricity. This fact may bo of importance in regar to the relative position of the lightning rod and gas pipes of a building. lOWA REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION.—The Republicans of lowa assembled in largenum• hers at lowa City ou Thursday last, The pro ceedings were enthusiastic and harmonious.
