Great Flood on the Lower ellealaelppl, (ay o correspondent of Ito Missouri Republican.) The prospects of the sugar planters above the crevasse, in the vicinity of New Orleans, is far below an average. The seepage water has done immense damage all the way op to Natchez. The river is rising again rapidly at Natchez, at which place it is twd inches above any rise since 1850. At Rodney it is in the sewers on Main street, and rdie two inches Friday night. The whole of Tensas Parish is in imminent danger. As yet no great danger is done except in the upper part: The town of Grand Gulf is covered, and the occupants busily engaged in moving to the second floor. Tho plantations of Colonel Coffey, %minces and Pirrsoriwere being overflowed by the breaks in the levee on Satur day. In the vicinity of Point Pleasant, the fields were covered in many parts by seepage. At Ashwood, a few miles above the point, the whole forces of the country were engaged to prevent the giving way of the levee. if they fail, all of Tonna Parish will be destroyed. At Hurricane Island above Askwood, (Davis Landing,) the water is up to the mark of 1850. An immense quantity of water was pouring over Mr. Davis' plantation, as well as many others, destroying everything in its way. The plantation of Joshua James, twenty-six miles 1 below Vicksburg, is half covered with !seepage water. The swells from steamers leaping over the levee on both sides of the river. At New Carthage and Warrenton, there is no dry!land visible. Fruit trees all dying from the effects of the water. The great crevasse, six miles below Vicksburg, is pouring out a river of water. 4.1,000 gunnies filled with" dirt have. been heed with little or no effect. I New eecinits wire con stantly arriving by the'boate fitim*below, whilst many have abandoned this workaad gone home. Tho difficulty in getting dry dirtrenders it im possible to check the foaming water, which in its wild course carries away trees and every thing before it. River rising slowly and gradually at Wicks burgh on Sunday. Point Lookout crevasse, just below Lake Pro vidence, is pouring out a stream ten feet in depth, covering the whole country In its course. River falling a little from Providence to Wor thington's Point, caused by countless numbers of breaches in the Levee above Providence. The plantations of Capt. Henry Johnson, Tom' War-field, Hunt, Jackson, Leland, and others, above Shirt-tail Bend Cut off, and in the vicini ty, of Greenville, Mississippi, are but little dam aged. The cut off carries the water away with such rapidity that it is impossible to overflow about Greenville, unless from breaks abOve. At Gaines' Landing met— the present rise, which increased all theetrity to Cairo. At Pen dleton's, twenty miles-above Gaines', the Levee is also gone, and water stretching over the coun try beyond the reach of human eight. At Shaw's, - rti'enty-eve miles aboye Pernileton's, water four inches below the rise of and leaping over the Levee in a dozed places. / 1 The streets in Napoleon 4o navigable for the great Eclipse. Arkansas rising slowly, but had been falling for some days. On the ith inst., at Prentice Landing, just above Napoleon, the levee yielded to the pressure of the great Father of Waters, and was carried, together with trees, fences, houses, and in fact every thing in lie way, off towards Silver Lake, in Bolivar coun ty. This is one of the most destructive breaks in the Mississippi river. Some of the finest and largest plantations in the whole State are com pletely overflowed, and made useless for the present. Above and below Napoleon, for many miles, the entire country is flooded on both sides of the river. Scaffolds have been built, on which stock of every kind is herded in a perish. ing condition. Hundreds of cattle, horses, Sc. can lie seen bunched on some spot under water, but a little more elevated than the surrounding land, in the most pitiable condition, the strong er ones forcing the weaker into the wide waste of waters which is fast gathering about them, and which will, ere this mighty flood subsides, give them as food for the fishes. !louses are ready to float from their moorings, while their occupants are preparing with floats and wood boats, to commence a journey, God only knows where. Concordia and Laconia are sharing the fate of Napoleon. Helena is one-fourth of an inch above the water. Gen. Pillow's plantation is watered all over from a break in the levee in front of him. Passed a flatboat anchored by the grave of the ill-fated Pennsylvania; brought the second clerk and captain np from Memphis; the third clerk, Mr. Clemons, is at Memphis, in a very dangerous condition. From Memphis to Cairo the river is arched in the center, and pouring on both sides several feet water. Ma drid Bend, Tennessee, and a small portion of Cairo, and around Madrid, Mo., the only visible spot worth .mentioning from Memphis up. Wa ter higher at Memphis than ever known before, and rising two inches in twenty-four hours. Most of the dwellings along the river are from two to eta feet under water. The destruction of the crops is not half the damage done. The loss of stock and fencing and cord wood, is con siderably more than a crop of corn or cotton. In many places wood boats are tied to a tree, filled with wood, and no sign of a living being near, the owners long since having abandoned their randy., and gone to look for an " arrc rat." joLlrlyd Z. tin Use Hickman, under tho hill, is well watered, whilst Columbus and Kentucky City are reluct antly bathing in the (aphid waters from the " Black Republican Kingdom." Tee ERUPTION or VENUVIVN—NapIes, May 31.—1 n my last letter I mentioned that there issued from the great basin of fire in the Atrio a single stream of lava, which, after a tortuous course, was descending the declivity of the moun ' lain. This stream has continued its coarse, varying in breadth according to the accidents of the ground, and seems now to direct itself to a point between Portici and Torre del Greco. In the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday, two other streams of lava broke out of the great basin, and are descending the mountain towards the neighborhood of Portici. These streams seem to follow the direction of ravines, which run nearly parallel to the ridge on which the Observatory and the Hermitage stand. These buildings have been hitherto saved from submer sion by the lava by their great elevation, the fluid naturally following the direction of the lower ground at either side of them. Last night the spectacle was peculiarly grand and imposing. The lava was poured in inereas ed quantity alotfg each of the stream, already established; and being in a high state of imam densconce, presented a peculiarly splendid ap pearance. Al about 8 o'clock an immense tor rent of lava broke over the ridge which confines the basin of craters, in the direction of Somna as an immense torrent of liquid fire, with Such extarortlinary rapidity that. in less than an hour it had descended through a considerable portion of the mountain. Its progress was then retar ded, partly by the diminished steepness of the ground, and partly by traverse ravines which must be filled before the fluid can advance, Nothing could exceed the splendor of this tor rent of liquid fire, forming the fourth principle stream of lava ; out the most extraordinary burst of splendor which has been presented since the commencement of the eruption, look place soon after 9 o'clock, when all the mouths seemed lobe simultaneously called into violent action, and to vomit forth such torrents of lava that the entire mountain seemed one blaze of lire; the varied colorsprodnced in different parts, owing probably in part to reflection, 'presented beautiful and striking appearance. -Tho lurid light diffused from this enormous burning mass rendered visible the subjacent country, the towns, the coast, and 00 bay. On each night several thousands of persons of all ranks, from the peer to the peasant, urged by cariosity, repair to the ocean of this extraordinary epee tacle. Part, of the extraordinary splendor of the spectacle on Sunday night was duo tithe burn ing forests, over which the lava passed. The Neapolitans congratulate themselves on thoctr- Otweetance of the lava haring been directed• into no many different streams; for if, as in former eruptions, bad it all been throWn into the channel, the destruction which must have ensued would have been tremendous. June I—The eruption is splendid! There are tame 'streams of lava, which just begin be tween Vest:alone and Somna; we went as near as possible ; wo climbed to the top of a ridge of lava, which had begun to cool, but it required all the carefulness of our guides to prevent our burning our feet off. On our way dowiwo went to the top of the Observatory, whence the view of the lava was splendid; the middle was flow ing as that as water ; there was a rayed reflec tion,du the smoke which.-- --said, justlike the aurora borealis in Scotland. The eruption began Last Wednesday night; the lava begins where it did in 1855. There were thousands of people on the mountain ; it was an extraordi nary scene. At theend of one of the streams of lava, that on the Castellamare side of the Her mitage, there wns a ceremony, I suppose to stop the lava. There was a saint and some priests in attendance—Car. of the London 7'intot TERMS, CHOWS n BLEssisto. Editor : Sour cor respondent who a while ago, suggested an amia ble device for killing crows with arsenic, should read the following from the London Quarterly Review : "The plants which he (the rook, a species of crow,) eradicates will be found upon examina tion to be dead or dying, and by devouring the cause of the mischief he saves the rest of the field from blight. Unobservant farmers, who never look beyond thesurface, often mistake the policeman for the thief. Luckily their power to injure the benefactor is not equal to their will or they would destroy him altogether, and leave the depredators (insects that knew roots, etc.,) unmolested to consume the whole of the crop. When an unhappy success has attended efforts of this kind, the evil consequences have been signal and immediate. After the inhabitants had contrived to extirpate the little crow from Virginia at an enormous expense, they would gladly have given twice as much to buy back the tribe. A reward of three-pence a dozen was offered in New England for the purple grackle (crow black bird) which commits great havoc among the crops, but protects so much moreher bage than he destroys, that the insects whoa he was gone caused the total loss of the grass in 1749, and-obliged the colonists to get hay from Pennsylvania, and even to import It from Great. Britain. A few years since an Act was passed the Chamber of Deputies toprohibit thadestruc tion of birds in a particular district of Franco. They had been recklessly killed off, and the harvest being sweet away in its first green stage by millions of hungry reapers, the earth had ceased to yield its increase. Extensive inroads like these upon the economy of nature reveal to us its wisdom, and clearly show us that if one while it is a blessing that particular; animals should eat, at another it is El benefit to the world that they should be eaten. A flight of rooks renders services which could not be performed by all the cultivators of the soil put together, and if the poor birds arc occasionally mischie vous they are richly worthy of their hire.— Make the largeht probable allowance for their consumption of a portion of that crop, the whole of which they preserve, and they are still im nmsurably the cheapest laborers employed a farm. Paget' would be required to tell all the mistakes which are committed in the blind rage for destruction. and in the readiness of the lord of creation to believe that every thing which tastes what he tastes is a rival and a loss - WASH INGTON, Juno 19.—Dispatches from Eng land was received and laid before the Cabinet yesterday. They do not in any substantial form c6frrespond to the expectations of the Adminis tration, or the opinions authorized by Lord Na pier's assurances. While they disclaim author ity for any offensive acts on the part of the cruisers in the Gulf, and are prepared to make reparation to that extent, they insist upon the purpoSe of suppressing the slave-trade by deter mined and effective means. A disposition to exercise the right of visit in the most accepta ble manner is avowed, and to that end Malmes bury expresses his willingness and desire to re ceive any suggestions from the American Gov ernment. The unexpected tone of these dis patches has made much impression in the Cabi net, and it in bgigyed our relations with Eng land must assume .: • eat character from what has heretofore existe . At the mili tary entertainments of Hyena and his seconds, the toast "To the total annihilation of journal ism and journalists throughout Europe," was drunk. De Pene was completely exhausted by an attempt to take his depositions on Saturday. The Herald's Paris correspondent says sever al hundred students have sent around robin to Figaro and other newspapers, conveying a chal lenge to the subaltern officers of the army The authorities have interfered. A Paris letter of Monday says a squabble be tween the military and bourgeoisie took place last evening at a cafe in the Rae do Bondy.— The military expelled a carpenterfrom the cafe, but he returned with some of his fellow-work men, and the troops were in theirlurn expelled by the Pegulns.
