Eitbas :—Southward from Ironton, an uuworked and unlocated country road, which as it belongs to every body, any body, takes the liberty of fencing in or moving—leads the traveler oat of the valley of Arcadia into a moire thinly settled and tolerably rough region. The hills and ridges—the cropping out of the Ozark mountains—aro frequently covered with forests of yellow pine. The soil is not inviting in its appearance, owing ton superabundance of Hor nostone or cher!) , limestone, mingled with it, and in many places covering the entire surface. The chert does not generally, lie in masses or boulders, but is broken into gravel by the action of the weather and fires. The pine forests do not resemble those of the North, the trees b e in g smaller, and not so densely planted. All the western forests—with the exception of those on the overflowedbottorn land—present the appear ance of having being culled and trimmed up for the purposes of pasturage Solna of the •• Oak openings" of Missouri or lowa, remind ono of the description of a well kept English park. Ilere, the work of opening, and beautifying is done by the annual fires, un aided by the axe of the woodman. The indige nous grasses which cover the surface, need no planting—and each wild flower finds the spot best suited to its wants and habits, with ou t a id from the guiding hand of man. In the fine ries, the Laurel—Wild Honeysuckle. Hazel, not various woody Annuals frequently escape burn ing. While suchseem too slender and insignifi cant to be retained long enough to die in its dan• gerous embrace; the fierce element clings, and glows, about the more robust forms, and gnarly limbs, of the fallen timber, until every vestige of them in consumed. The stumps are burned off, and even the roots followed deep into the ground, as the horseman may find to his cost, if he ventures rashly to gallop over the surface, which otherwise seems cell adapted for a chase after any stray fox or squirrel which makes its appearance. The land of the pine ridges will probably prove to be of great value for the cul ture of the grape. Professor Swallow has shown by comparative analysis that the soils closely re semble the vine-hills of Italy and Spain, and in the congenial climate of south Missouri, it is' quite probable that the choicest foreign grapes may flourish as vigorously as on their native hills. The neighborhood from which this letter i• dated resembles somewhat in general surface features the vicinity of Bedford in Pennsylvania —the mountains hero being less in height, less precipitous, and more varied in outline—or broken into rouutl-topped knobs instead of long ridges. The valleys are frequent, and unexcelled everywhere in fertility, having the depth and mouldiness of null so peculiarly a Western fea ture. I saw grape vines in one of the St. Fran cis bottoms, from ten to twelve inches in diame ter, the tendrils of which were spread over the tops of the highest trees in the forest. The springs are numerons, and nearly all possess that desirable qualification which the good old Penn sylvania farmer thought belonged exclusively to those on his home-farm—vie: "They run sum mer and winter—day and night—yes, night and day."• I saw ono which is used to turn a small corn mill, and others which are quite suitable for the same purpose. In some of them the water boils up over a • sin face of five or six feet in diameter, through which the clear white, an gular !linty gravel, which form' the bottom of the pool—mingled with gas bubbles, like the bead on champagne. They titter from the cele brated warm springs of Virginia, only in being cold es ice and without any of the improvements or adornments of art. We visited several min eral springs in the vicinitywhich are quite pret lily situated, and if Sam Weller's definition is to be relied on, may some day become places of _fashionable resort. They are decidedly. ••Killibbeate—having a strong flavor o' warm flat-irons." Nathan Montgomery, Esq , the geologist, mineralogist, surveyor, miner, jus tice of the pence, farmer, and best hunter among the old settlers, assures me that if he lived near enough to the Rattlesnake spring—Noce chris tened .. The basis of hin theory seeme to be that this world, when created, was perfectly spheri cal and exquisitely beautiful : all the metals in their primitive untarnished purity bring on the surface, and studded with precious jewels and the most brilliant specimens of the mineral kingdom. It was in the language of scripture, - without form and void." But the operations of the air, water, light and “fluortr adds - caused the metals to "begin to go tiowu" for the per pone, no doubt., of rendering the globe hnhilside Tho most easily soluble went down tint an, consequently deepest.: for instance, salt, it be ing now found in the very lowest depths of tin. earth 1 ,, 11, on the other baud, which is mar. insoluble to the common agencies, find having no affinity for tho "fluorie" and other subtle acids, still remains near the surface. The roots of oak trees and many other agencies also carry on the operation of depriving tho surface of its metals. An oak tree three feet in diameter, the Squire estimates is capable of having ••carried down a hundred pounds of copper." Even the most unscientific mind will at once perceive that the position of the metals being actually I',, in the earth, and at various depths, is corrobora- tive of the above. They mast hare gotten there '.ho®, as the Squire justly observes; and Ihi fact alone led me, without undersiiinding t he subject fully, to express a favorable opinion of the new system and a desire to see it laid before the world. I trust the editors of the 11,,:ette will appreciate the immense importance of the subject of geology, and will not begrudge the benefits of this sly method of advertising a new book gratis; and that when ilia meets the eye of the Squire he will not only forgive no for dragging his name prematurely before . the pub lic mind, bat, whatever others may say, permit my well meant praises to be a bond of kindly feeling between us. Have you ever felt—while some one eloquent ly discoursed in your ear about his speciality— his new dogma—of neology, Theology, Meta physics or Machinery—like a boy In a watch shop, looking at the outside of a shining box and hearing faintly the tick which tells of the mys teries going on within? Ile who talks to you may be the. great watchmaker, holding in his hand the Mysterious machine, stripped of its concealments, and examined by the aid of a magnifying glass, or ha may be eminently a metaphysician after the Scotchman's definition of the term.; The rivers in South East Missouri, away from the Mississippi bottoms, are especially attract. ice. Undisturbed by such avalanches of ice as are accustomed to cut and score the banks and root up or crush down vegetation from the bor ders of our; Northern streams, they possess, in the overhanging branches and dipping shrub bery, a peculiar beauty. When to this in added, water transparent as air, never muddy, seldom even clouded, and moving swiftly over a clean bed of manycolored pebbles, or angular whitish gravel, the admiration for them is unbounded. ..... One is compelled to believe that n country with such streami and mountains cannot be unheal thy. Apropie of health—we rode four miles one day to see a family. A sprightly old lady of 78 sat knitting beside her husband, whose mother, said to be 10, was seated near them, picking cotton. Hai grand children, with their children and grand children, reside on adjoining farms. The appearance of the two old ladies, with their quaint neckerchiefs and raffled mob-caps of snowy whiteness, at once sent my ideas cruising into the middle of the last century. The cen tenarian is a little, thin, dried-up Freneby body, who, if her years were judged by outward ap pearances, as antiquarians guess at the age of a mummy, might be set down for at least a thou sand. She remembers well the time when, near ly a hundred years ago, her Huguenot parents brought her to North Carolina, but seems to have forgotten the more recent incident of her life when, fifty years back, her family migrated to the spot where they now reside. The old lady has long been blind; yet in the interval between short periods of apathy into which she sinks from limo to time, her busy fingera ply the task they learned when she was a girl. We called during this visit-at a hound where I was made the victim of what my companions considered a - • • very good practical joke. Iler wisest men have awakenelt o the knowledge of its inexpediency, and the macat's ore begin ning to realise that their minds have been long enslaved in a thraldom as degrading as that which bolds the bodies of the negroes. It is a common orpiment in favor of Slavery to say that the negroes are better elf than the "poor" whites. Idle, unambitious, without schools and unable to read, they have been hone. cessable to the enlightening influences of the press, and do not yet know their degradation or its causes. There aro many such in Southern Missouri, who came from the Carolinas, from the mountain region of Kentucky and "back yonder in East Tennessee," hot they only bold their "claims" for purchasers at easy prices by the emigrant from the Northern States. There are several Pittsburghers settled in this vicinity, among others Mr. Geo. It. It was understood between the parties that Mclntosh was to hold the stock, and then quietly make it over to Weed. But, unluckily, Mclntosh died suddenly, one tine day, and forgot to leave a will.
