A book bearing the title of “Minnesota, A "Bundle of Facts,” has jaat been issued from the press. Its author is a person who styles himself “A Socimnu? Pbe-Emptop.” This work is best described by a western critic, who says of it, that “ita prose is poetry—and its poetry is—in discribable.” Tho facility with which the author glides from prose to rhyme, inbis flightsof fancy is really surprising, and forms the great featurer of the book. Tko following extract, depicting the attractiveness of Minnesota to European emigrants, and tho impression which is produced upon them, after “locating” within Us borders, may be taken as a “specimen brick,*' from ibis fanciful structure: "N»J, more, there are many other peculiars ties, extraordinary, valuablo and beyond con ception; for.they must bo seen to create belief, os tbeto aro things true, stranger (ban fici ion iVll, If you will, trillion! exaggeration. A prosaic, milter of fact Wisconsin editor, however, throws a wet blanket on these lucubrations by a single stony faced paragraph, which destroys the effect of our author’s mus* logs, and of the poetical epistles of his emigrants to their friends beyond Ihe Atlantic, at the same time. Thia cruel poragniph so un-poeti cally truthful and bo un-imaginative in its con struction, reads as follows: “The amount of debt which the late vole of tho peoplo of Minnesota has imposed on them selves, amounts lo S23,NG for every man, woman and child in the Territory, which is greater than the proportionate debt of any other state inthc Union. Pennsylvania, which has $15,C0, is nexl to it, and Wisconsin, which has bpt lGcenls, Ufhe lowest of any Slatewhich has any debt at ; pll. When we consider the probable resources "of the people of Minnesota os compared with those -of Pennsylvania, the dis parity becomes still greater. Uowover, if the money raised by tbo loan could be economically and legitimately expended, it is probable that ita direct effects in cheapening transportation to market, and makings market for products, would equal the whole debt. That editor has little or no music in bis com position . and is certainly mode of coarser ma terial than the hopeful author of “Minnesota, ora Bundle of Facts.” Tjib Knoli.-wi Swindle.—Col. Forney, who is now in Washington city, writes to the Press that the more the English proposition is discussed the more odious it mast become to every intelli gent citizen. Tho proposition of submission is adroitly presented; hut the fact which will strike the popnlar heart everywhere, and which ia signally consistent with the whole trickery of this entire Lccompton business, is this : that if the people of Kansas will rote fur the Deeomp ton Constitution, then, and in that case, they will be admitted into the Uniop ; but, if they re ject it, they mast wait tho time when they have reached a population sufficient to entitle them to a Representative, (93,000 at present, and about 120,000 under the new apportionment of I 860,) which will keep them out four or five years longer, leaving them in the meantime un der the control of the same pro-slavery Influence which has oppressed them from tho beginning. In Other words, Lecompton, with its protection and perpetuation of slavery, shall be made the Constitution of Kansan, with n population, ac cording to tho occounts of the pro-slsTcry rrlc’n themselves, of not mare than 36,1*00; while, if the people reject it, and proceed to make a Con stitution of their own, they will lie kept knock ing at the doors of Congress until they have at tained the requisite ratio of population ' The .English bill, in .order to secure the support of the Southern extremists, omit* that portion of Mr original Senate hill reportedly Senator Urten upon tchich to much tlress inn laid for the purpose of capturing iceak Democrats, that proclaimed (he doc trine that the people of Kansas could immediately proceed to alter-the Lecompton Constitution outride of the provisions of the Constitution itself. On this theory powerful appeals bnvr>hccn made to the people of the North to agree to Lecorapion faith Bat now Mr. English, in order to obtain the support of tlio seventy-six HonHiorn Democrats id (be House, who lately voted to alri-ke out that provision, deliberately erpunyes it from the new programme, and to leave t Ltrompton purely and timply a pro-e.lavery Constitution. This rompro aitse,. to miscalled, provides that Kansas can only b«admitted into the Union as n slhtc State Col. Forney adds : "At all hazards, sink or swim, come what may, put The. St. Loots, Mo., April 19th, 1858. You think Pittsburgh is an exceedingly filthy city; bo it-is, but the filth in which it abounds is a substantial, wholesome kind of dirt and quite endurable when one gets used to it. Here they have, daring a rainy time like the present, about three todies more depth of mud than we, on tho surface of the cobble stones, and a very disagreeable, soapy, Micky, sickly looking kind of mud it is, 100. To a Pittsburgher the whole surface seems to bo covered with a rather soft mixing offire-clay, and Btiggesla the idea of a terrible wasto of a costly material. It is noth ing, however, but lbs grinding from the sur face of an over soft limestone, with blocks of which the streets are paved, and when it be comes dried and pulverized ns the summer ad vances, it is more suffocating in its nature than even our mneb abused coal smoke. The people hero fully appreciate this drawback to their comfort, and are in hot pursuit after modes by which lo remedy the evil. H j a now contem plated to substitute for the limestone a more durable '‘metal” in the shape ef ore from the Iron Mountain. No doubt the Bubstituto will be a good one, and if it should fail the next ex penmeot will be to pavo with cast iron. When ihe public mind is fixed on any object so desira ble in a city like this, they do not stop one inch short of its attainment. A Comparison between the public spirit and enterprise of the commer cial and manufacturing cities or towns in the West, scem9 to result vastly to the discredit of the latter. But “comparisons are odious,” and I banish them with tho reflection that dirty, sooty, and disagreably dead as it is »' m.ny things required In fcw p np -null ik, gresstro Oge, ay native city has still more charms for mo than any other. St. Louis is so familiar to your readers, generally, nsnotto 2“5‘. if Cnp k tl0I,; 4 ler ’ are l *° or three spe cialities, though, to toll about which may be new and interesting. 3 Tho Mercantile Library is something to be proud of, and above all things here affords an exaroplo most worthy of imitation. Tho build ing, which was erected for tho association by a chartered for the purpose, is about 100x1 JJ feet and of a proper height for its in tended uses. Tho ground floor is occupied by stores and the grand staircaso. On the first floor is the Library Room with the necessary halls and enlo-chambcr, also an audience hall capable of containing about 700 persons. On tho Ihtrd floor is the principle ball for lectures which is furnished with seats for about 1,500 people, and is large enough for 2,600. ’Tho Library Room is 80 feet by G 4 iu tho clear and of a sufficient height for a gallery range of shelving. It is handsomely but plainly fur nished wiLh cases, desks, &c., and contains at present 14,219 volumes, valued at $23,000; of these about 5000 volumes have been donated, a commendable ovidonce of the wisdom and lib erality of th© citizens of St. Lonis. In addition ta books, newspapers and magazines, tbe.rooms bavo for ornament some beautiful and valuable paintings. Miss Hosmer’s exqusisilo “tEnone” occupies aprominent place. The beautiful shep herdess Is represented just atlhemoment when having told her sad story to the goddess, she realizes the full extent of the desertion of Paris —her lover and husband—and remembers that be sailed from Mount Ida in expectation of tho fulfilment of an augury which promised him the most beautiful woman of Greece. (Eoone has sunk sorrow stricken upon the ground her right arm sustains her form—the other hangs listiesslyand nervelessly. The drapery has fal len uncared for below her waist, the neglected crook lies beneath her, and the drooping head and listless, hopeless, beautiful face speaks in marble tho words of Tennyson’s poem “And 1 was left alono within llir tower And Irotn that time to this I not alouc. Anil ] shall to nluuu nntil t die. ' This exquisite work does not belong to the Association, but has been placed in the room* by a wealthy gentleman who, possibly, may be holding in reserve the pleasure of presenting it to them. Miss Hosmer spent a year in St Louis, and though very eccentric sho made maoy friend*. When she left, a number of the gentlemen of the Library Association gave her in its behalf a commission accompanied by a thousand dollars. The work has been executed and is u6w oq its way to St. Louis, and will ere long add a new attraction to tho rooms. In strange and wonderful contrast with this, the ante-room contains a sculpture of another oge. It is a relique from the walls of a palace of Ancient Nineveh. The slab is about ten feet Bquarc and two inches thick, and wns sawed from the face of one of the enormous blocks i>f marble described by Layard. For convenience of packing and transportation it had been cut into nine pieces, which ore now fitted together with cement. The figure sculptured on the stone is about eight feet in height, a winged man, with elaborately fringed robe, from which hang several cords and tassels like those of a modern dressing gown. The handle of a dagger, carved to represent a dog’s head, is seen in his girdle. The hair and beard are profusely dressed, and bracelets are on the wrists One hand is raised as if in the act of plucking t be piue j apple which it holds, and the other bangs down 1 grasping a satchel, very much liko the flat straw baskets the ladies carry. The robe falls to the heels behind and only to the knees in front. The feel wear sandals, which bavo a counter rising from the boll of the foot to the top of the heel. Many of the works described by Layard were colored—this bos no coloring except on the part of the sandal just described, which is black, and makes one suspect there was “patent leather” in those days. The inscription runs across tbo figure and whole face of the slab in 2G lines, divided from each other by a faint chisel mark, something like the ruling and wri ting in a child’s copy book. It is the Ancient Persian language, the character used being that koown os “cuneiform’ or cone-cut, so called from the cone or bar at tho right side of the letters, i regret to say I did not read the in scription, so am not able to tell you what it is about. The Library Association procured this relic through the agency of the Rev. D. NY. Marsh, Missionary at Mosul, on the banks of ; tho Tigris, nearly opposite the site of Ancient Nineveh. Mr. hlarsh bad it excavated, sawed from the block, cut into pieces, packed in boxes and started on camels to find Us woy to the New World, and now twenty-five hundred years or more sfter having been placed os a chief orna ment in a palace on the Tigris it forms a chief ornament to this more noble palace on the batiks of the Mississippi! Packed in five boxes the stone was started its journey, curried by camels via Aleppo lo Bairut on the Levant, on the 23d day of July, 1855. It came by ohip to Boston, thence to New Orleans, and by steamer to St. Louis, where it arrived in March, 1857. The cost to the Association was about $2OO, for excavation, packing, transpor tation and other charges. Mr. Curtis, thegenilemanly librarian, showed mo, among other curiosities, an old St. Louis di rectory. Tho editor informs us it was gotten up at great expense and with “great expendi ture of assiduity and pains” Among other useful information in the book, it ia slato'j “There is one bell-man, threo widowers, never »i pleasure carriages, or hacks, and a consider able number of drays and carts,‘-plno revrral profrsf #nal musicians wboplay at balls.” In walking along the levee to-day, or in the datch quarter of the city, one would be inclined to nay in t’nc style of tbo present prevailing westernises—“TnAT’a so.” J3i. Louis bitd then 5,600 inhabitants. The account further says, “There are two stages run from this town, one to Edwardi iville and one to Franklin, and it is contemplated at some fature day to open a direct intercourse nith India by the Missouri and Columbia rivers. ” Among the Advertisement!) and occupations are found the names of some of tbo “old famjlieW”— the present F. F.’s of St. Louis. In looking t»ver them 1 was forcibly reminded of an idea of Jno. G' Saxe: “Depend epos It my tooLMjli friend, our family tree you itiootda't aaceuti, toat job And tbit It* tupmmt liiuto atupeod A aledge hammer, eurry comb, waxeu end, Ur Kim« other fralt, that witt aurely j»-i ti-ud.
