It is true the dominant party In the Legislature, under the lead of Mr. Buccalyw, refused to pass a bill at tho late ses sion for its abolition, as It should have done. The democracy always fighL desperately against, any diminution of the avenues to plunder, Qnd their policy, at all times, is to incrcasor rather than diminish the number of public officers.— This is only carrying out their well known po litical instincts; and even the knowledge that the recent action of the Legislature rendered Ibc office of Canal Commis&ioocr r a mere biuecure, could not induce Mr. I’uctalew and his politic:*! friends to consent to scud the old Board into retirement, with its retinue of offices, thus saying sonic twelve thousand dollars to the j treasury of tho Commonwealth fiut after all | is said tho old Board has but a notninul exist ence. Tho act authorizing the transfer of tho Canals to the Sunbury & Erie Company has de prived it of all control over the improvements, as they now stand, and, what is more to tho purpose, prevents thorn from receiving any money from the treasury, for the proseoutioa of The Commissioners, their engineers j and clerks, still have a hold for their salaries j for another year, and then the next Legislature will cut off all supplies, and send them to the shades of private life This is ono good re sult, at least, from bad legislation, and should reconcile us to many of the shortcomings of the Session of 1858. From the following extract it w»U be observed that while they can feather their own nests they can no longer enrich their friends at the expense of the people, as has been their practice for the last twenty years, with but a short interval. The occupation of office brokers, claim agents and contractors is gone, and the people everywhere should rejoice at this happy consummation: “In consequence of the passage of a resolu tion, by both legislative brandies, forbidding the payment of any money to them for the pros ecution of repairs and other work, after tho pas- j cage of the bill for the sale of the State Canals j to the Sunbury and Erie Railroad, the Canal ; Commissioners have taken umbrage, and have | given notice that they will cease to exercise con i trol over said works—their hands being eui- , pbalically tied. The Company lo whom tho ; works have been transferred aro making ar rangements for the projection and completion of all necessary repairs, and lor the successful operation of these important improvements. — The defeat of the bill for the abolition of the ] Canal Board, therefore, will be productive ot uo good to those whose pecuniary interests were thus sought to be cared for; and Mr. Buckalew’s advocacy of a necessity for the continuance of the Canal Commissioners does not appear to have been well predicated, for a Board of I’ubllc Works would bo ablo to accomplish but little with their hands muffied, to keep them out of the treasury.” Prehtice asd J. B. Clay.- in his defence of Lecomplon Democracy, is com polled to encounter at every turn, some plowing and patriotic wcnlhnent from his dreoased father, which casts ebame apon him. Ihe unnatural and ungrateful son iu hia affilliaiiou with his Bire’fl ancient traducers and enemies sectna to have thrown bebiod him every enobling and re fined feeling. To any other individual how dis tasteful would bo an association with James Bu chanan —a man, who perpetrated the t ilest slan der agaiust the Statesman of Kentucky iliat he wa9 compelled to encounter during his whole life time. If James Biouanan must be defend ed, let not the eervicc bo performed by any one who bears the name of Henry Clay. In the | coarse of a recent speech delivered iu Congress, j Mr. Clay expressed himseif as being very much annoyed by having the views entertained by his deceased father thrust in his face, on all occa sions. He desired to mark out his own course, | and lobe held responsible for hi-* own views - This he has a perfect right to do, but his pres ent alliance does not make turn any the less au ungrateful and unnatural son. who forgets his father's virtues, in the company of that great man’s worst and most malignant enemies Prentice, the personal and political friend and admirer of the elder <Vv., thui raps the recre ant over the knuckles*. The last paragraph is severe, but richiy deserved “Mr. James B. Clay has addressed a letter to the Boston Daily Advertiser, denying that ids father was the author of the Missouri Compro mise. We don’t know who may have originally suggested that there should bo such compromise, but we know that Henry Clay gave it being nod was therefore to all intents and purposes its author. We know too that he was prouder of that great act of pacification tbau of any other of the glorious deeds that adorned bis long and brilliant career. Had Mr. Clay, nt any timo between 1820 aud the day of his death, been asked what achievement of all his lifo he re garded as entitling him to the most honor at the hands of his own . generation and of posterity, he would without one moment’s hesitation have designated the passage of the Missouri Com promise. •Olr. Clay was the uuthor of a great many glorious things, and of only one that he had reason to be ashamed of—and that one is now in Congress. _ _ Thu way iu which democratic politicians in the flourishing city of Chicago do some things, shows that they are a mean eel of fellows, capa ble of-very low odious. The telegraph an nounced, a short Umc since, that the proprietors of the Daily Times, of that city, had been ar raigned, in a criminal prosecution, for purloin iog a letter front the United .Slates mail hag. This looked bad euough for the publishers afore said, and caused their brethren in other cities to regard them, in advance, as being in rather an ugly scrapei It is true, they had not been con victed, but editors should be even -above sus picion” of committing an offence of that hind. The whole affair turns out to be mere ppile wort. growing out of tho Lecorapton swindle, which I really seems to be at the bottom of all the mis l chief that is afloat. The facte in the case are ns follow: A privato letter from Cooke, l*. M- at Chicago, to one of his assistant wire workers, was mysteriously placed in an envelope, directed to the editors of tho Chicago Tvntr, the Douglas paper, in a disguised hand, and thrust under the door of the Times sanctum. It was published in the Times as a rich itom, as it contained some luscious political news, and was accompanied by appropriate editorial observations from tho Dou glas point of view. Cooke &Co wito greatly enraged, and the editors of the 7W* were ar rested on a oharge of purloining letters from tho Posioffiee. Upon investigation, they wero dis charged.
