Beyond lhe pile of stones, all is black lines on a while ground intended to represent mountains, and possessing as much interest to the looker on and as many points of : attraction as a view on Sahara. Tho only thing suggestive is the “wavering, tattered, tegumental envelopemenl i/i posteriori,'' i t in times pant, and except that, nothing. Our readers will pardon our diclionaml consultations, for when ono writes of science and of art it vlnuibl be “in good set phrase." Allans The view above alluded to is one cast towards (vide supra) Monument XIX We turn, there fore, to that, with feelings of hope. Hero it is. In the foreground are two dead trees, one cleft rock, one log of wood, one smali (cut, anJ a back ground of white paper and black lines very neatly drawn. Wo might add that any person who shall hereafter stand at the inter section of the 111 th meridian with parallel 31 deg. 30 min. North, will bo delighted with the view that charmed the pencil of the ambitions artist who has here written himself “orograph ist." Our readers may think we aro misrepre senting this book, but wo protest we cannot toll half tho tale. Here are 3*2 of these huge octavo pages filled with just such nselcss aud dead liuc engravings as wo havo mentioned above Soeh is the most general glance at Part I Then follows Part 11, for tho most part a con tinuation or a repetition in subject of Pnrt I There is, however, an added chapter with the most elegant steel engravings in conchology we hiTe ever seen PITTSBURGH: WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL -I, 1868. I*. Nfvis, C'- Arothetl F.ulube.—Tho President has O'. I succeeded in carrying a single measure throogh Congress. He has been defeated on the Army bill, defeated on the DeGcieney hill, defeated on the Lecompton bill, and now he has been de feated on the Pacific Railroad bill A great deal of influence, ingenuity and address have been expended upon it during the last four months, but it was put aside (ill Decombcr next, although Mr. Gwin, who had (lie measure in charge, an nounced tbatsuch a rote would be considered by him as conclusive against tbo construction of any road to California. Of the forty-seven Senators present, twenty-five voted for the postponement, including eighteen Lecomptonites and twenty-two in tho negative, one half of whom were anti-Lecomplon men. Thus it will be seen that this favorite measure was killed by a Democratic opposition, and I lie President sgain subjected to another of (he many humili ations to which ho has been exposed since the meeting of Congress. The administration, as such, is now _ as powerless there as before the country, and the 4 CTe^°Pmen l B every day only serve to render its weakness more visible and p&infnl. Thero never was such a fall be fore, in so short a time. When Tyler abandon ed the Whig party, and renounced the principles by which he accidentally reached the White (louse, he must have forcsocn the consequences of that defection upon a Whig Congress, and therefore was prepared for the repudiation, which followed so justly and swiftly Mr. Bu chanan claims to have maintained his Demo cratic integrity and consistency, and yet the Democratic majorities which greeted his inau gural address, os the advent of an auspicious Presidential term, and as insuring future suc cess, are now melted away into minorities, avowing nothing more than bare toleration for those in power. Mb. Evkbett ih Charleston. —Some scamp who has no regard for good morals, declares lhat Mr. Everett is like a roasting turkey, "going round doing good.” We have been quite grati fied to observe that his visits to tho most fiery and furious cities of tho South have become al most an ovation, and that eloquence and music combine to welcomo him. John A. Washington, having stripprd Mount Vernon of all its smaller growth of shrubs and sold them for canes and liko, Bomo of which doubtless graced tho . of tho lato Mr. Brooks, of South wYGprolina, concluded to sell, if ho could get the sum of $200,000. This could never have been raised li ini r of Mr. Everett we learn he is in Charleston, where a Mr. Yead<m wel comed him in a public speech surpassing in its flowerf Bombastes Furioso himsolf Tlear him ‘‘Patriot, Statesman, Philanthropist! In your person Charleston lenders a cordial wel come to Boston ; tho Palmetto Fort offers a friendly salute (.0 Bunker Hill; the bold nulli fiers of the Stamp Act give thc.right hand of fellowship to the gallant spirits of tho Boston Tea Party. Child of the Pilgrim State, which laid broad and deep the foundation of American liberty and popular self-government on Ply mouth Rock—son of the Old Bay State, which rocked tho cradle of the Revolution—offspring of the rock-girl and ice-bound land of the Adamses, (he Otises, the Quincy? and the War rens—tho sunny laud of the Pinckneys, the Rutledges and the Laurenses—of Marion, Moul trie, Sumner and Pickens —bids you welcome, •thrice welcome, to her commercial emporium, now preparing, we fondly believe, for her speedy coronation as Queen of tho South. Ilerc, in tho city of the evergreen Palmetto, rival of the Laurel as on emblem of victory, in sight and in car-shot of the cannon of Port Moultrie, pub lic honors awaited you, had you been willing to receive them; but such ceremonials having been forborne, in deference only to your own wishes, the voice and the hand of personal friendship now greet you, (here Mr. Y. and Mr. E. ex chaogedthe friendly grasp,) and private hospi tality affectionately folds you to its bosom-” After writing the abovo our eye fell on an ar ticle in the Richmond South, which, being the President's organ in that city, carries great weight with it. Not even the defeat of the sweet and graceful Lecompton Constitution has shocked, tho South and Mr. Buchanan more than the fhlsome laudation of Mr. Everett in Charles ton. The South (newspaper) has no bowels of compassion, no yearnings of gratitude. It for gets that Mr. Everett’s labors have procured the cash for Mt. and will bring more good money into Virginia than that State has in all probability seen for many months. It forgets that he once asserted his willingness to shoulder a musket and kill tbo slaves, if necessary, to keep them from obtaining their liberty, and was so enthusiastic for the “rights of the South'’ that John. Randolph himself was ashamed of and rebnked him. After all-Mr. Everett s labors, dangers andsufferings in behalf of the “outraged South,’’hear Mr. Buchanan'a South (newspaper): “Throughout life Mr. -Edward Everett has been a consistent Abolitionist. When he was appointed Minister to the Court of St. James, the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Senate, of which the wise and conservative William R. King was Chairman, reported against his con firmation on the ground of his exlrcmo antago nism to the institutions of the South. At that time a letter was produced wherein Mr. Edward Everett avowed himself in favor of the abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia, and of the 81ave trade between the Slates. These prin ciples he never disclaimed till the present day. U was be who presented the petition of the three thousand New England clergymen to the Senate with much eulogy of their learning and piety. These were the services which signal ized Edward Everett's last term in the United Stales Senate. ! “When Sumner’s scurrility provoked merited chastisement from a gallant son of tho South,' Mr. Edward Everett exhausted the resources of invective upon Brooks, and of eulogy upon Ibe base calumniator. Going beyond (he necessities of personal feeling, he v indorsed the political sentiments of Sumner’s speech. “These things Edward Everett did, and yet he Is honored in the South by many most elab orate demonstrations of homage- He is im ported to Richmond to teach Virginia how to admire Washington! Ho goes to Charleston and is addressed in this strain of adulation: 'Orator, patriot, sage! Cicero of America. Laudator of Washington, apostlo of Charily, High Triest of the Union, and friend of mankind.' “Tho forco of folly can no further go. Tho South not only warms the viper in her bosom, bnt warms it after she has felt tho poison of the fang.” Tho organs of the administration are always wild with admiration of the gallant Brooks. That Mr. Everett may secure an equal share in the regard of Mr. Buchanan and his friends, he has only, to emulate the deeds of Mr. Brooks, not extol the virtues of Washington. Douglas at Home. —The Illinois Democratic State Convention met alSpringGeld on the i;jtu, and almost Boughs. The adopted resolutions approving of the Nebraska Bill, the Cincinnati Platform, and the Inaugural of the President. It also adopted resolutions approving the course of Stephen A- Douglas, Thomas L. Harris, and of the Demo cratic Delegation from tho Stale, in regard to 'the admission of Kansas under the Lecompton Constitution. Bnt one pereon in the Conven tion was opposed to the resolutions, this was the Postmaster at Chatham. When (he resolu tions were unanimously passed, he asked leave to withdraw from the Convention, which was granted without a dissenting voice.
