I think many, very many, of your readers
would be gratified to find in the Oaiefte liberal
extracts from the Post, Union and Pennsylvanian
upon the subject. Indeed if thfl rebukes are not
too numerous and too long, 1 think you might
add some extracts from the democratic papers
in Baltimore, Wheeling, Louisville and St. Louis,
if any such arc uttered.

Committee on Territories have very wisely and
properly reported against the organiialion of tho
Territory af Arizona, and in lieu of it submit
ted an amendment to tho organic act of Now
Mexico, which provides for a new judicial cir
cuit, to include the Gadsden Purchase, and for
a now census nod apportionment in tho Terri- (
tory, with a view to giving a fair and equal rep* |
resentatlbn in the Territorial Legislature It n j
presumed that these provisions will remedy the
evils now complained of, without creating any
more Territorial Governments at present. The 1
Committee have also reported a bill which pro
vides that no new State shall be formed nntil it
has the requisite popnlatiou for a member of
Congress, which, according lo the present ratio,
is ninety-three thousand five lmodred and twen
ty inhabitants, and will probably bo moro than
a hundred thousand after I 860; and, further,
that no constitution shall he sent to Congress
until it shall havo been submitted to and ratified
by the people to the end that Congress may have
tho best evidence tho nature of the CAse admits
of that it is the act of tho people and embodies
their will. As this provision applies to all the
Territories except Utah, which is an anomalous
case and must be eeparately provided for, it is"
believed that it will haTo a wholesome effect in
preventing a repetition of tho evils which have
arisen out of the Locompton controversy.

A JailobVWivv..— At Watertown, (N. Y.j on
Sunday morning lost, three prisoner*, by feign
ing sickness, got the jailor, Sir. Barker, in their
power, gagged, and bound him and locked
him in a cell. This done, they robbed him of his
money and tho keys of the prison, and were
calmly taking their leave when they were
“brought up all standing” by beholding the
jailor’s little wife pointing at them through a
railing a loaded revolver, and calmly informing
them that she would put a ballet through the
first man who attempted lo come forward. A
parley ensued in which the prisoners threatened
to kill her husband if *he did not leL them pass
out, but she avowed her determination to fire
upon them tho moment one attempted lo pass the
door, and held them at bay for about half an
hour, when help arrived and they were driven
baok to their cells.

tor who was discharged from the employment
of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, some
time ago, for inviting a friend to ride over the
road with him, as bo did not liko to ride in the
train alone, has been reemployed by the superin
tendent. But we see he is again the hero of
another adventure, which has been made public.
The newspapers say (and what they say must be
true, you know) that on a recent trip tho train
"of which this conductor had charge overtook a
cripple, limping along by the side of the track,
when our hero, the conductor, kindly invited
him to get on and ride. The wooden legged
man thanked him, and replied that bo would
rather not, as he was in a hurry. That conduc
