|!il(stonrj| ©aortic. * PITXSBTTBQH: MONDAY MORNING, APRIL 12, 1858. orrioiJLL Paper of ms cjtf. City -axul. News Items. Tub city of Allegheny miglft be one of tho pleasantestand most invitingln tbewholo West, u the grounds belonging to it and laid oat ia Commons were bat properly cultivated and adorned. The oriphal'pla&. of tho city was quite nnlque. Tho, “Diamond” was the heart. This contains four acres of land, and at their centre, Federal street and Ohio street intersected each k other at exact right angles, U>o former running perpendicular ' to, .and the latter parol* lei with the Allegheny 'river. TEo city was then divided into four wards, whose corners tonohed each other at tho centre of tho Diamond: Around these fourwards extended the Commons which it was evidently originally designed should bo fenced to, laid out in walks and plant trees. If that could be done, wo should End that paii of the city which was built within *®- e ® T, iS** l *! four wards, the centre of a splendid park.. The trees that would come in time to cover it, would brook off tho dust ia summer, and the blasts of icy wind in winter. In the hot »j they would impart coolness, and iu the coldest would insurers degreo of comfort. Every peraon dwcllingjn the city would come to lake delight m this marked feature of the city, and strangers would/come to buy and build, and dwell m a place .where nature had insured health, and art had given beanty. Pittsburgh would take as miich pride iu her sister os if she possessed the beauty for her own. In foci wc are ideutical in feeling and in- interest. Wc , nave here no place for improvements of the sort I wc mention above, and it has always seemed to us os if it was almost a reflection upon Provi dence to leave beautiful tracts of good land to be only a receptacle for odious filth, a wallow »ug ground for swine and an and pasture for venerable cows. We are aware that tho requisite improvements would involvo a large outlay of money. We.. learn that many persotas living aloog the margin of tho commons, destro ana are ready to give towards the improvement, and we trust they may do so as much; as posniblo. The bill which *-has been before the legislature, touching this -matter, was killed there by an amendment of Mr. VoegHtley that all improvements should be paid for by tho persons d welling upon the com mons so improved. It is not our province to say that dwellers it* the distant parts of the city ought to contribute: but would not city pride naturally dictate that property belonging to all the citizens should be improved by all? We have thrown oat these few suggestions as they have presented themselves to us, simply and only because we wish fori tho progress and beau tifying of Allegheny. Wo have no other interest to substrvo. Might not the requisite improvo ments b« made by a voluntary contribulion from the citizens ? By Gas.— This is an age of steam, os has often beeu said, and steam, is found a very uso fal Bgenb Ccv ~>g is *. accomplished by steam, to a certain extent. But it remained for fir. Musgrave to inTent a inaohine by which cook* jog, in all its branches-—broiling, roasting, fry ing, slewing, boiling, etc.—-and also ironing, and all other domestic matters for which a stove, rango is now required, can be ac complished, without the aid of coals, without cinder, ashes or soot, and without any useless expenditure ,of bent. He uses for fuel a mod erate jet of Gas, and for each burner a neat and appropriate little stove, upon which little stove you can perform- all tho culinary opera tions of tho kitchen, without any of those dis agreeable consequences of useless beat, sleam, dust and soot, inseparable from the tiso of coals, whether in stove, or range grate. To multiply the facilities you have only to add to tho number of burners and stoves; and of courao there need be no waste of fuel, as you can turn off Ike jett of gas In on instant, and start your Gas Stove just as speedily. The beat • required can be regulated in the same manner,; , from a glowing red to a quiet simmer. The cost Ntf tho Gas Stove is not greater than that of our ordinary coal burning stoves, nor is the cost of fuel greater. Indeed wc think that the ouly thing which can prevent every family within reach of Gas from adopting this improvement is the difficulty of bringing them to realize its great advantages. Those who call in to see the Gas Sioto in oporation, at 75 Smithfield street, near Diamond alley, will certainly order Gas Stoves suited to the extent of their families at onco; it is ono of those simple, easily under stood things, which every housekeeper will at once recognize as a great invention, and adopt into the list of domestic necessities. ‘ Tot <3ot9Tß*rEiT Mosrr7—iWe staled on Sat - ariiay morning the fads connected with the ar rest of-Arnold, of Allegheny, nod Moore, of Mi ncrsviUe, and the circumstances which would seen to connect them with the making, vending and passing of counterfeit coin ; also the fact that at Moore’s place of residence a large lot of dies, block tin, zinc, acids, counterfeit coin, etc., was foand and brought-to the Mayor's office, and that the porsons arrested were commuted for safo keeping until a preliminary examination might be had. This latter came oIT on Saturday. Mr. Arnold waved an examination, and gave 'bail in $3,000 for his appearance at the May lermnf the United StatuiDislrict Court. Henry Moore desired a hearing, and had one. Mr. Huberts, United States District Atto/ncy, being in attendance, to look after the interest of tho Government, Mr. Hagne was sworn, and testified to (ho facts above slated. The District Attorney demanded, after bearing his evidence, that the prisoner ho held to answer. Counsel for defence claimed that it was no offence to have dies in one’s possession, unless it was shown that he hod used them to violate the law. Mayor Weaver held ptherwise, and the prisoner was ordered to give bail in-$3,000 for his appeacance at court. He was unable to fiud-security In that amount, and was committed to prison? The prisoner is a peddler by occu pation, and accounts for the presence of JJie dies in his houso by stAliog that they were conveyed there without hm knowledge or that of his family. ■ ' We tee by the last Connellsvillo Enitrprue, that Mr. John L.
