Tlie Great Awakening.
Wo conceive that a religious movement which
engages a dozen states, anil breaks down the
walls of sects, and attracts the attention of a
nation, becomes legitimately the subject of com
ment in the secular newspapers. A stirring
revival of religious interest exists in many of the
communities which the Republican reaches, and
promises to pervade all classes, all sects and
all conditions of men. The phenomena which
appear are peculiar, and to say nothing of the
Christian and humanitarian aspects which they
present, cannot fail to bo of interest to the
philosopher. A disposition to religious contem
plation and action come upon a community be
fore it is aworo. A general prayer meeting is
proposed by those who catch tho signs of the
OQ-coming influence ; thedoors are tremblingly
opened ; and before wo can express our wonder,
every seat is full. Men and women, some of
whom would seem to have been religiously
dead for years, are there. There is evidently
a deep interest. The hymn goes up heartily,
and then springs forth from or un
trained lips a simple prayer. There is no study
in it. Thero is no nic£ measuring of phrases.
It is a petition, coming from a heart oppressed
with a sense of need, and oppressed with natur
al fervor. Then one after another rises and
says a few words of exhortation, and the pray
ers and the hymns miogle in with wonderful
sponlaniety, until the hour is exhausted. —
There le no noise, no excitement—uolhing but
deep and decided interest.. They separate and
as they pass along tile 'street to resume their
business, some carry faces of earnest solemnity,
and others of undisguised and grateful joy.
We say that these phenomena aro such os
may well engage tho attention of every philoso
pher. Let him took at them. Let him explain
K’Mrd them is this movemeut a disease—an cpi
jAstt. m nusß demic disease of the mind? Diseases produce
cnly bad results. That which makes a man
more spiritual, which calls him out of his sel
fishness, which revivifies his moral nature and
brings him into legitimate relations with <lod
and men, can hardly be called a disease. Dis-
eases bring disorder, but this brings harmony.
Sectarian names are forgotten, and people come
together simply as Christians. This is what re
formers have been laboring for as a meaeuro of
health- There is no diseaso about it.—
At least--we ibiuk there is not. Is it dclu*
Do delusions fly in the air* Do they osu
ally seize upon the best minds* Are they apt
to get such a hold upon infidels and prize fight
ers, against their wishes and their effort, bo as
to transform them into believers and meek, bum-
ble, teachable men’ Do delusions take men
from their business and their sensual pleasures,
nud make them ineffably happy in self-abnega
tion. and self devotion to the work of making
men better'.' This is certainly not the usual
course with delusions. Delusions ore apt to
make men worse—to KlYP.rjign to passion, and
excuse to appetite. That.Ve believe, is the his
tory of delusions the world over. They do not
improve people. It is against nature and rea
son (hat they should.
Id it a sham? Is it a .hum-bug'* We judge
note Men do not put themselves out in this way
for a ham*. Besides, a cause, whatever it may
be, which bends before it a whole nation of
minds, as tbe wind bends the forrest; which
stills passioQ and abates pursuit of
gain, aud reforms impure and immoral life,
and forces the relinquishment of opinious.
woudly and persistently held through a long
ife. by other force than that of argument,
which makes children of the wise and wise men
of children, which pashes out of sight sectarian
predudice, and melts whale communities into a
sympathetic mas? of raind. must be something
more than a sham. Men do not get in earnest
over what they believe to be shams Meu of
character like a great multitude of those who
engage in this movement are not the ones to en
gage in the perpetration of shams They are
above it.
What is it? Wo übulljnot undertake to an-
swer this definitely. It is eoough for us to ex
press the conviction that it is neiLhcn-an epidem
ic disease, nor a delusion, nor a humbug, nod
that there is something really great andgood in
il. It is enough for us to assert our belief that
it is a legitimate movement, whose results can
not fall to be of incalculable benefit to all those
communities which becamo the scenes of its
phenomena. A revival pf religious interest in
a community or country, given, as ourß is,, to
headlong pureuil of monoy, ie a good thing, and
all good things come from Heaven. A revival of
religious Interest isas legitimate as the revival of
any interest. It takes extraordinary interest to
preach extraordinary results, in anything, The
Christian cKurch of this country has been ox
traordnarily dead The breeze that
is passing over it now sets it bowing, and quiv
ering, and whispering with awakening life, as
tbo wind moves the wheatfield. There has been
extraordinary prostitution of honor and honesty
in politics. There has bccncxtraordinary cor
ruption in business. There has been extraor
dinary swindling through boneless schemes of
speculation. Thero has been on amount of ex
travogance and luxury. Thero has been an ex
traordinary amount of wickedness of every sort,
and to counteract and correct all this must tako
somo extraordinary means. Accordingly, thero
is an extraordinary infiuenco abroad, an ex
traordinary interest excited, and an extraor
dinary course of procedure—quiet and natural
enough—has boon instituted.
Last fall there swept over the country a great
business revulsion. Wo did not know exactly
where it came from. Sopje said "paper money,”
some "tariff,” and all
said "panic.” The thing passed the sea, and
i ben it was not paper money, nor tariff, nor
over-importation, but It was something else,
mixed with a great deaf of panic. The panic
was declared to be the most senseless thiug io
tbe world, but everybody felt k, and a great 1
many were ruined by it. Exactly what that
panic was wo haven’t ascertained yet, but,
somehow, it went everywhere like this revival
wo are having now. We are Inolined to think,
notwithstanding the Impression to the contrary
which exists in the mind of some, that there is
a Ood and that he is somewhat interested, in
tho affairs of men. We are inclined to think
that ho sometimes adopts extraordinary meas
ures to bring a nation to Us senses, and keep it
on the right track. If this be tho case, we do
not exactly see how bo conld haTe managed
this affair hotter than ho has done. It looks to
it* marvelously like a matter of design-ef
most benevolent and benefloent design. Wo
are all trying to start off In business again.
We have been brought to our sonses, and, just
in this time, come the awakening and the re
vival to bid us begin upon a better foundation,
and go into lifo again with a uow spirit.
It is not our provinco to preach or to exhort,
but we very frankly oxpress Ihe opinion that tho
more of onr people who pnt Ihemeelrca in tho
woy of the influences which now prevail, tho
better. We haro yet to see the first man who
bos sustained ilnmnge by becoming at heart,
and in Ufe, a Christian. Vou old sinners, who
have led a hard and onrelcse Ufe, pnt Jronrsolvee
in the way of good. Uo into the prnyor meet
ings. They will not hurt you. Yon yonng
men, upon whom lifo is opening,-you whose
characters are forming, it wtU not harm yon to
incorporate into your Ufo tho Christian clement.
On the contrary, it will do you a world of good.
You men of middle ago, you hard drinkers, yon
swearers, you iiccntlons men, yon eeoffing men,
you double-dealing men, nil of you look in
upon the prayer meeting, and see how it affects
you. Your friends in other places aro doing it
and declare themselves benefited. Our opinion
Is that it will benefit you. Try it and see. It
would be a great comfort to all of us to see our
community transformed Into a religious city,
and there certainly has never been a time in its
history when tho thing oould be so easily done
os now. Tbe tendencies are In that direction.
The popular mind is turned that way. Go to the
church, go to the conference meeting, go to tne
prayer meeting, and may God bless joa

New Hampshire.— Before the late election in

behind the estimate by 764 and 7G*>, respective

than the Committee’s figures. This may be
called a close calculation.
