Wo conceive that a religious movement which engages a dozen states, anil breaks down the walls of sects, and attracts the attention of a nation, becomes legitimately the subject of com ment in the secular newspapers. A stirring revival of religious interest exists in many of the communities which the Republican reaches, and promises to pervade all classes, all sects and all conditions of men. The phenomena which appear are peculiar, and to say nothing of the Christian and humanitarian aspects which they present, cannot fail to bo of interest to the philosopher. A disposition to religious contem plation and action come upon a community be fore it is aworo. A general prayer meeting is proposed by those who catch tho signs of the OQ-coming influence ; thedoors are tremblingly opened ; and before wo can express our wonder, every seat is full. Men and women, some of whom would seem to have been religiously dead for years, are there. There is evidently a deep interest. The hymn goes up heartily, and then springs forth from or un trained lips a simple prayer. There is no study in it. Thero is no nic£ measuring of phrases. It is a petition, coming from a heart oppressed with a sense of need, and oppressed with natur al fervor. Then one after another rises and says a few words of exhortation, and the pray ers and the hymns miogle in with wonderful sponlaniety, until the hour is exhausted. — There le no noise, no excitement—uolhing but deep and decided interest.. They separate and as they pass along tile 'street to resume their business, some carry faces of earnest solemnity, and others of undisguised and grateful joy.
