Perhaps less is koown in regard to the mann • facture of printing paper lhan any other article 1 entering so largely into the every-day necessi ’ ties or life. Eren printers, ao directly intercst i ed in all mailers pertaining to the manufacture of their great staple, do not all know ihe causes of their virgin pages looking as if they had an attack of measles or jaundice. We took occasion, rcceDtlyj to visit the new Paper Mill of Messrs. S. B. & C. P. Markle, Bituale in the borough of West Newton. The Messrs. M. have been identified with paper maktDg for many years, supplying the Gazette , and several other city and country papers. With an aroplo capital, and uu indomitable energy, they determined about a year ago to erect a new mill on tho railroad and river, driven by steam, which would place them on at least a fair foot ing with any similar establishment in this region of country. They still koep their old water mills In operation ; these aru situate on Sewick ley creek, about two miles distant from West Newton, and have a very superior water power. The new mills are very favorably situate on the Youghiogbeny river, at the head of steamboat navigation ; there is a daily steamer thenco to this city, during the season. Coal is delivered at ihe mill at the very low price of To cents per ton. The proprietors haTo also laid a switch from the Pittsburgh & Connellsville Railroad down to their mill—thus placing themselves be- , yond the reach of contingencies, by securing both railroad and river communication with the East and Weet. West Newton is a flourishing borough of about 1000 population, on the east bank of tho Yough iogheny. It contains several Stores, a fine Flouring Mill, Taonery, Foundry, and three good Hotels. While the route to the eastern cities was via steamboats to West Newton, and tbcnce by stages to the western termini of the Central road, the hotels of the town wero well filled, and the fame of their proprietors more widely circulated tbnn at present. In this con nection wo may say that the traveler who should place himself under the hospitable care oPMrs. Lowry, of the Exchange, might go further and find no belter bouse, and no more amiable land lady. Aceeptiug the kinJness of C. P. Marklo, Esq., we were escorted through und around the towu, and introduced to moat of its inhabitants, Wc were agreeably surprised to find most of the good citizens’ names "familiar as household words,” and to know that most of them are re corded on the moil books of thv Gazette. But ihe feature of the towu which claimed most of our attention was Tho building is built of brick in the most sub stantial manner, the foundation walls being 3 feet in thickness, and Lhe main walls 22 inches. The mam building presents a front of 238 feet by 51 feet in width, and is two stories ia height for about half lhe length—the balance being CtiishcJ by a sky-light (ransom, for ventilation. Thu- roof is slate, laid on lath—an original thought of Mr M., wc believe, his idea being to avoid the loosening of the slates by the tenden cy . f Hheeting boards to warp. Tho roof is an excelleut on*;, thoroughly water and fire proof. Eutenug fit the main door, we passed np stairs to the RAG BOOM. ■Where we found quite a nutnb v rof girls engaged in assorting the rags, placing in separate parcels the various colors. When thus carefully select ed and placed in separate bins, the next step in the process is the These are three in number: first, & outer resem bling, somewhat, a farmer's straw-cutter, by which :h<j rag* arc chopped inlo small pieces, and tailing into a carrying speut arc conveyed inlo a tvcond and finer rti'trr, which completes the process. As the material passes through this last, it is again carried off by ihG driving spout into the picking cylinder, fuil of spikes, into which the rag entung* are conduct ed, and which, revolving rapidly, thoroughly separates the pieces, removes all foreign fcouics and loosens the dirt and dust Formerly, white paper wan only made from white r»g«. cr cotton waste, etc CuL we now arriro at thAt process by which colored rags arc reduced to the original while of the cotton, flax or hemp; the principal agent is a& immense BrVcLnsrJ STEA?I CTLOCDKB, Some eight fee* in diaoetfr, CftU 26 feet long, made of heavy boiler iron, with au adjustable steam tight head near its centre, from which, interior, radiate rows of spikes This cylinder is swung upon a ponderous shaft, at an eleva tion of m fett from the floor, on permanent brick piers, and is made to revolve by machi nery Inio the opening of this cylinder, which when turned up is lertd with the floor above, is thrown 4t»00 lbs. of colored r-.gs, with the ne cessary amount of common lime and'Soda Ash: the steam head is then screwed on, the steam let in too pressure of about 40 lbs to the inch, and the cylinder pul in motion by n cog wbeeL The action of the alkali, which is Increased by the pressure of eteaui softening the rag. thoroughly unfastens all the coloring matter, and after the mass has been thus acted on for about 10 hours, the steam is let ofl. the bead taken off the cylin der und the motion reversed, when it drops the mass of pulp into the room below. In this process accidents lnve occurred, by the genera tion of gas in the cylinder, from greasy material in contact with the tdkali; to avoid danger of t.his kind, there is an ingenious gunge which is so arranged that a pressure of more than the given weight blows an alarm whistle. The ma terial is now a mass of rags, thoroughly ‘’stewed” until the color is ready to wash off: it is there fore taken to the WASUINO MACHINE!*. These machines, twoiunumber, are construct ed in the most substantial manner, of cast iron. The liquor used is a chemical preparation, of which chloride of lime and soda ash are the principal Ingredients. Wo cannot describe t hese machines, but would recommend the plan for washing other fabrics. From the washers tho mass is again placed in large wooden cisterns In chemical liquid, where it rests quiet for a time. This is the Cold Bleaching process. Thence it is carried, an almost spotless mass, to the Two in number, heavy cast iron cisterns, with their model-wash-tub machinery. If one were to put a very doubtful colored shirt in at ono end of this vessel, it would doubtless appear, after a few revolutions, in spotless purity at tho other end. Having accompanied tbo vari-colored moss of chopped rags through all this process, we now have it in a fine, white, fiberless pulp, which is now conducted by a spout into a largo RZCEVI3G BE3EHVOIB, In the paper-room, which has a capacity of 1000 gallons. Here It Is kept in constant motion by un agitator, and is pumped up as it is used to (he pt*LP nnrssisß. This is the first step towards paper making, the material now being ready for use. This machine is a sort of fine scire, which is kept in constant motion, and separates any particles which may have escaped detection or decomposition thus far. Under the dresser scire is n spout which carries the now fluid pulp, through various motions, pumps, agitators, etc., to the roCEDINEE MACDI3T. There aro two machines used principally in the manufacture of paper, the Fourdiner and the Cylinder. The former is an old English in vention, which fell into partial disuse on ac count of its exceeding coat, for sometime. It is uow made in this country, howorer, and though very expensive, is considered indispensable in making the best printing paper. Tho material used is necessarily non corrosive— there remain ing sufficient traces of the chemicals with which the pulp was purified to corrode iron. The Fourdiner is made of copper or brass, and is a highly polished &od elaborate machine, too com plicated for a full description. We con only say that the fino brass wire cloth with which it is carried on a series of rollers, anti bordered at the sides by a thick belt of gutta pereba, re cei res the liquid pulp as it comes from tho'dress er; the Fourdiner has sucha variety of motions that, whilein this liquid state tho pulp is diffused as uniformly as possible over a wire gauze. Car ried at the rate of 00 feet per mlnuto uow, after beiogsilted and oscillated and shaken by themr.- obitio for about fiftcenfcct, the pulp has already been sufficiently drained of water to be called paper—though still very wet and fragile. But as it leaves tho wire cloth it has enough cohe sion to be self-sustaining, and carried over, un der and around a Berks of cylinders—now on ti thick fdt cloth, which absorbs part of the mois ture, and which is in Us turn dried by passing over a hollow cylinder, heated by steam—until, having passed between several pairs of cold rolls, It is ready for the onviNO cTtrsDtns, Five in number, heated by steam,, revolving amid other smaller cylinders over, around and amongst which large ond, small cylinders, all connected by the continuous sheet of paper, now on the polished cylinder, now having a felt cloth interposed, the sheet At length reaches two pairs of smooth cylinders, the CALLENDJUM, Which impart the finishing gloss or enamel, ac cording to the weight of the ahect, and the qual ity of the stock used. It is now wound upon BECtmNa urns, And is from thence carried to the ccmso EHTVAS. Tho machine we are endeavoring to describe is €2 inches wide. For ordinary -sizes this is split in two, and is cat off by an ingenious knife which measures the exact length of each sheet as it revolves. Two girls receive the finished sheets from the oattcr, and these are then count ed by the packer, who carls up the smooth edges of the sheets in ?uch a manner as to render this comparatively cosy—counting four sheets, or five, or six, for a finger, ns he thus steps along (ho serrated edge, until he has 2d, when he folds. The pressing and bundling are, of course, simple jobs, and’the paper is now ready for. market. ' This mill was built by the Messrs. Markle after many years experience as,manufacturers, regardless of expense. • The entire machinery is of the beaL, and was made to order by Nelson Gavu, Esq., Broad street, Philadelphia. We mention his name in this connection ia order that a worthy Pennsylvania mechanic may have the advantage of this notoriety. The cost of a first class paper machine, complete; yis about S-35,000. Tbe capacity of the West Newton mill is about 300 square feet of paper per minute. This is made of any quality, and cf any sire, as ordered. A great desideratum in tho manufacture of prioLing paper is a constant supply of dear tcater. The water for supplying this mill !b procured from the river, and is forced into a large cistern or tank in tbe building, from which it iB conducted ia pipes to the various tubs, vats and cisterns. The pump used is Hugh's Patent Eliptical Rotary, with a suction and force capa city of over 400 gallons per minuie. With a section of three inch hoso attached the whole building can be deluged with water. Indeed such is the arrangement of tho mill that a fire is almost impossible, tho eteam boilers being outside, and the building heated entirely by the exhausted steam. Besides this, there is such a plentiful flow of water through tho entire build ing, that it would appear impossible to ignite : any portion. ; iB usual. 5T7788.8 GaASTS PIANO, S T E I IST W A. ~XT «Ss SONS, -V E IF YORK.
