In reference to the posi of Mr. Porter, the Harrisbargh correspondent of the North American says: "There have been many curious statements made in political circles since the adjournment of the Democratic Convention. These statements refer particularly to the position which the Democratic nominee, William A. Porter, holds in regard to the platform adopted by the con vention. It appears that some doubt had been ontertained relative to his position upon that subject "by each men as Hendrick B. Wright, etc:, who claimed to be the peculiar friends of ■ President Buchanan. For fear this doubt might affect his standing with them, he wrote a letter ) to his father, avowing that he favored the Presi dent’s views npon Kansas. This letter was used by his friends, and was shown, among other delegations, to that representing Luzerne. They, although coming hither with preferences for Sharawood, upon reading this profession of adherence upon the part of Mr. Porter, agreed to vote for him, and did so. Upon the other hand, I understand from a Western member—a member entirely reliable —that Mr. Porter announced ten days ago to Mr. Francis, the Republican Senator, and a former schoolmate of Porter, his (Porter’s) un hesitating opposition to the admission of Kansas upon the Lecompton basis. I find, also, that all the anti-Lecompton Democrats who repudiate the platform, but sustain the nomination?, are warmly for Porter, because they say that they know he is against Lecompton." The Slate Trade.—The E7>ucm,our harlequin Lecomptoo neighbor, professes to be quite fa cetiously exercised at an article which appeared in the Gazette of Taesday, touching the re-open ing of the slave trade. Our wbeel-about-and turn-about friend quite ridicules the idea of re opening that trade! The editor has been so anxiously watching the Lecompton swindle, which he-at first condemned, that he has not probably noticed the fact that the Louisiana Locofoco House of Representatives has actually passod an act authorizing the importation of slaves from Africa into that State. This Act was passed on the third of March. If Buchanan is forced to make this piracy* test of Democracy, os hekas already made fraud a test, the Union will be among the first of his supporters. Illinois. —The Chicago Tribune says that a new democratic paper is to be started in that city to support Buchanan, aod.adds: “This is a formidable movement and will pro duce a revolution in the Democratic ranks of this cLy and Stale. In this letter Attorney-General Black asks, ‘ls Mr. r(the applicant,) a Democrat! Does he sustain Buchanan, and does he denounce Doug las! If so, he can hare the office.’ This shows that the war upon Douglas is to be bitter, and that no man who sustains him is to be spared.” Pahsoh Browxlow,— The New Orleans Pica yune “confesses to a very great reluctance that the intellectual character of the South, to say nothing of its decency and conformity to the proprieties of life, should be represented through out New England by a clerical Thersites so vol uble of vituperation, and so extremely familiar with the infernal gods, as Parson Brownlow.” Does tho Picayune suppose that any notice would be taken of this old blasphemer? He died on Saturday night, twelve o'clock, December 'list, 179'J." The singularity in this case is that such a statement seemingly so precise and accurate should be published and pass without remark. Washington did die in December, 170'.*, but neither on the minute or hour or last day or even in the lost week. He died on the leenth day of December. 1701). Tue Ot'TODsn Elkction —The State election j next October, will be a struggle of absorbing in terest. In addition to Justice of the Supreme Court and Canal Commissioner, (the latter office soon, we hope, to be dispensed with, as an ex pensive superfluity,) the people will be called upon to elect members of the Legislature, rep resentatives io Congress, and n number of County officers. In this city, the important offices of Sheriff and Register will be on the roster. It will therefore be seen that there is quite enough materiel in the hands of the people to return the compliment upon those who are now standing forth, with swords drawn, thirsting for the blood of every man who will not desert the principles and pledges of the Democratic party. There i a hearty consolation in this: and all who think they can discard sacred obligations, and violate eternal doctrines, with impunity, cannot too carefully poDder upon it. In this city, besides the members of Congress, whose acts are all to come before the people for ; revision, (and they may rest assured that this revision will be os drastic and fearless os the Austrian proscription Ut Washington, to which three of them, Florence, Landy, and Phillips. < now stand committed.) wc are to have for the first time a trial of the tingle district system. The ambitious gentlemen at Harrisburg, who are so anxious to - sanctify the minority principle in Kansas, will bear in mind that they may have to encounter the majority principle at their own doors. Their acts at the State Capitol will tie rigorously reviewed in the small district in which each most hereafter make his own canvas?. There can be no absorption of mediocrity, no -oblivion to incompetency or unfitness, no con venient cover thrown overanti-Democralic votes, as was the case when some seventeen candidates for the lower Ilouse vrero mixed together in a moss on ODe ballot The attempt to make the rule of fraud and force and minority in Kansas a lest of Democ- racy, has touched a. sensitive chord in the American bosom. It has aroused the latent energies of the Democracy. “It has put a live coal on the back of every terrapin.” The re moval of men from office who will not submit to this rule of fraud, force and minority in Kansas, the reward of men who will, and the system of suppression and oppression in Congress, has made the masses eager for a popular test on their side, and sternly resolved to have if. Vainly now will power propose a compromise; vainly now will these proHcriptionistM be called off from their search for recusants. The people are resolved that the principle shall be.respect ed, and that the pledgeeball be fulfilled. Those who fired the prairie will not find it so easy to extinguish it The principle which we contend for is as old as free Government itself. It is atthebasiaof the Democratic creed. Lost to our platform, it des troys the platform. Rejected in onecßße, it will he rejected in all. Withheld from Kansas, it will bo withheld from other new States ; and the moment the Democratic party deserts it. that parly becomes a faction, and tho great bond which holds this Union together is annihi lated.—Phila. ?rf«. Defalcation at the Union Bask.—A com plaint was made yesterday at the Mayor’s office by the Cashier of the Union Bank, against Henry K. Brotherson, the first bookkeeper of the bank, and another person—an accomplice—whose name did not transpire, charging a defalcation or embezzlement of a largo amount of money. It appears that the reckless and suspicious course of Mr. Brotherson. tho first bookkeeper, was detected some six weeks ago, through the ; vigilance of Officer Jos. Keefe, now of tho Depu ty’s office. Mr. Keefe reported his discoveries and convictions to Ihe bank, and measures were adopted to find out Lhe defaulter in the act, if possible- The suspicions entertained were re cently much strengthened, hut nothing that would warrant an arrest was discovered. On Monday about 11 a. h., Brotherson left the bank, as ho remarked at the time, to get a drink, sayiog he was unwell, and did not return. — Nothing further from him was heard up to yes terday afternoon, although vigilant search was made by some of the detective police. He resi ded in Thirty-second street. The bank officers, on searching the books yesterday, discovered a defalcation of upward of $lOO,OOO. Brotherson, it is said, was in the habit of visiting gambling houses, which accounts for tho embezzlement, and It is stated that he lost moßt of bis ill-gotten funds at a faro-bank kept in the building No. 1 Ann street. Warrants were issued for him and his accomplice, and placed in the hands of Ser geant Birney. Tne Uaios Bank Defalcation.—Since the report of tho defalcation at the Union Bank we learn that Segt. Beroey has arrested Brother son's accomplice. We have not been ablo to obtain his name, but it is reported that be is a prominent Wall-street operator, reputed to be wealthy, and a mun who has heretofore been re garded as of the highest respectability. The accused was taken before the Majorat theterideaco of Peter Cooper, Esq., leal night, ear o bail to a heaxy amount.
