Thero is an in eradicable impression as to his “aegneify,” each as is always created by success, which prevents people from supposing that he could contem plate such a coarse. £>o what he may, there fore, he will still be “our faithfal ally,” until possibly some morning an announcement in the Montieur will throw a new light upon tho mat ter. At present any hostile manifestations are simply viewed as part of his astute contrivances for diverting the army and preventing them from supposing ho is too unflinchingly devoted to us. “The last thing he will do will be to break with England,” is the cry, ond the wish is farthtr to the thought. Perhaps it is to be the last thing he will do, hut there are those who be lieve he will do it, nevertheless. He is sending a fleet to the lied Sea, ostensi bly to be readytoconveyabodyofFrench troops to China, where it is certain they will not be need ed. Theso troops are to go through Egypt and to embark at Suex. At all events, tbefhips of war will be at Sues, whether the troops are sent or not; and in case of necessity these ships will be ready to stop the overland transit.. They might also take in hands the Australian mail steamers, and even visit some of tho Australian ports. At (he same timo France Is to he separ ated into five great military dlvisious, but all. according to the representations made, merely with n view to homo protection. Every office of the slate is likewise being thrown into military hands, even that of Minister of Ihe Interior JeTilyd .JA&XJTB uatis having just been filled In this manner. Of course, again, it will be said that the soldiery thus predominant will fully approve the mainte nance of the motto. "The Empire is peace,” aod will find every satisfaction for (heir ambi- tion In remaining at home to act the part of tpies and policemen. WUh every tongue sileus*d, every p en that woulddareto put forth a wqrd in support of commerce, mo rality-and good faith, in contradistinction to the fiercer impulses of these sons of glory, it will still be contended, untU the plot is matured and the moment arrives for throwing off the mask, that the days of revenge and aggression have passed, and that the exchange of international benefits, the promotion of friendly intercourse and the cultivation of the beneficent arts con stitute the supreme aim of France. To auy one who credits such professions the question should be, “have you ever seen or conversed with a breach soldier? If so. he would merely re quire to be reminded that itfotbe French soldier that now represents the country. It was mentioned some tijpo back that imme diately after the risit of tbf Emperor Napoleon to Osborne, the English project for a railway and telegraph to India by the valley of the Eu phrates was suddenly discountenanced bv the Government. Some persona fancied there might he a connexion between the two events. The stoppage of our communications is the primary mode by which we can be embarrassed. The Egyptian transit, as has already been observed, could be cared for in that respect. The Eu phrates route might offer more impediments to Interference. Hence observers who fiod.it im possible to dispel the suspicion that one of the conditions at Osborne, in return for certain con cessions on the part of France, was that the Euphrafes scheme should no longer be supported by oar authorities. At all events it is admitted that French influence at Constantinople bos pre vented the concession for the telegraph being granted. It was promised to an English compa ny, and had already passed the Council of State, when at the eleventh hour an intrigue succeeded io preventing site signature by the Grand Vizer. But for that fact we should by this lime almost hftTe been ia instantaneous connexion with India. The loss by the depreciation must be counted by millions. Under any circumstances, therefore, we find it expensive to meet lbs ''••.nsequenccs of having a faithful ally. But the Emperor Napo leon gave a thousand pounds to the relief fund for the sufferers of the mutiny, and our public, perfectly blinded with the touching act, bad no wish to ace further. Fioally, if there were no other reasons for watchfulness, it is to be remembered that there is not a single step in Ihe career of his uncle which Louis Napoleon has not tried to imitate except that of making war upon England. Coder theso circumstances—remembering the meeting last Autumn at Stutgardt with tho Em peror of Husala—remembering also that the professions and solemn oaths of oar ally in all other respectß have Invariably proved deceptions, to cover some patiently concocted scheme of an opposito character—warily parsued for years and never oommanicated to any one till the last moment—it will be seen that it would at least bo unwise to cast away all idea that tho political borixoQ of Europe will ever again show a cloud. Indeed the existence of a cloud has just been made apparent, and although it may be said to been no bigger than a man's hand, it is an Important thiog to consider that the man to whom the hand belonged was Louis Napoleon. —London Cor. N. K Com. Advertiser. Tub Anti-Lkcompton Meeting.—The meet- ing of the Anti-Leeompton Democracy lastnight, at Smith k Nixon's Hall, was quite a successful affair. - The Ilall was crowded to overflowing, nod as-tbe evening advanced, the audience grew decidedly enthusiastic. Mr. Riddle presided. Judge Matthews (U. S. District Attorney) delivered a carefully prepared argument, to show that the President bad departed from the Cincinnati platform, and from the pledges made by the Democratic party, in regain] to popular sovereignly in Kansas. The Judge is also sup posed to bo tho author of the resolutions subse quently reported. Hon. Henry B. Payne, tbe Democratic candi date far Governor of this State at the last elec- lion, followed the District Attorney in a long speech, very decided and severo in some parts, and rankly “rebellious’’ throughout avowing at the start his Intention to do the Democracy no harm, and his expectation that nothing serioas was likely to happen, he warmed up os he pro ceeded, and “shrieked" with great power for -“bleeding Kansas." lie, in fact, distinctly said, as wo understood, him, that the unfortu nate change of policy made by Mr. Buchanan, in consetjuenco of the'threats of certain fire eaters in Alabama and Mississippi, involved the “disgrace, distractioo, ruin and destruction” of the Democratic party, lie further declared that the South had alienated the confidence of the Northern Democracy, he believed forever. He “hurled defiance at the dictation of the Execu tive"—a bold operation, which was hailed with unbounded and long-continood applause. He also read the Union’s meditation “among the I tombs," ovor the remains of Douglas and Wise, and produced other testimony that he and his associates were read out of the-party. The ! name of Douglas was. mentioned, for the first time towards the olose of Mr. Payne's speech, and os he paused an instant after its utterance the audience took the hint, and vociferously cheered. It is rory evident that Mr. Payee and Mr. Buchanan will have to part company, no mailer which„ia the heretic.. The other speakers of tbo evening were Judge Johnston, of Kansas, and McDowell, of this city. — Cm. Qat. Heads Fauukg !—Mr. Ward, mail Agent for the Slate of lUineis, has been taken down a head for supporting Douglas. Dr. Leib, of Chicago, Le comptonite, succeeds Ward. ■: Qen. TL:m. A figure standing alone, represents units: a figure standing before it, leos; a thirl figure prefixed, huodreds; and so on. If then a figure be transferred from the place of units to that of tens, it omes ten times greater. TERMS i If the numeral 1 be transferred Jr >mthe place of units to that of tens, it becomes 10. The difference then, made by the change is 9. Consequently the difference being itself 9, when divided by 9 leaves no remainder. If the numeral 2 be transferred from the place of units to that of tens, the difference is two nines or 18. Of course, if divided by 9, it leaves no remainder. In the same way you may go on with all the numerals, or any number of numerals. You may transfer from the place of units, to that of tens, or of hundreds, or from that of hundreds, to that of tons, or of units, every transposition you make, gives you differences of nines, or of tens of nines, or of hundreds of nines, accord ing to the place the figures take in the transpo sition, or some multiples of these, according to the numerals transposed. Consequently the difference, or sums of diff erences divided by 9, can leave no remainder. ..... 1 00 .. 1 76 .300 .. 4 00 .... 6 00 7 00 S 00 ... ...10 00 J2 00 ' 50 00 'A Stout of a Jack-Ksife.— -Theßoston Lt&jtr tells tho following: In 178 G, a youth, then re siding in Maine, owned a jack-knife which he, being of a somewhat trading disposition, sold for a gallon of West Indiarum. This he retailed, and with tho proceeds purchased two gallons, and eventually a barrel, which was followed in due lime with a largo Block. In a word, he got rich, and became the Squire of tho district, through the possession and sale of the jack knife, and an indomitable trading industry. He died worth property in real estate and money value for $BO,OOO. This was divided by testa ment among four children—three boys and a girL Luck, which seemed to have been the guardian angel of the father, deserted the chil dren: for every folly and extravagance they could engage in Beemed to occupy their exclu sive attention and cultivation. The daughter marriod unfortunately, and her patrimony was soon thrown away by her spendthrift of a hus band. The sons were no more fortunate, and two of them died of dissipation and in poverty. The daughter also died. The lastof the family, for many years past, has lived on the kindness of those who know him in the days of prosperity, as pride would not allow him to go to the poor farm. A few days ago, he died, suddenly and unattended, in a baro where he had laid himself down to lake a drunken sleep, un his pockets being examined, all that was found in (hem was a small piece of siring >md ajack-l.n\ir' So the fortune that began with the implement of that kind left its simple duplicate.
