[For the Pittsburgh Oswlte j “DANCING.” Messr*. Ediiors: My attention haB been called to a decree lately promulgated in the shape of printed slips left in charcli pews, and perhaps otherwise declared. This- decree sets forth that “in view of abounding iniquity in the land, our Synod at Us late fall meeting recom mended to all the churches under their care to humble themfielves before God and repeut of their sins,'which caused God to bide his face from them.” And “as the result of those earnest and solemn recommendations, your ministers have felt themselves constrained most earnestly to bring befot%.your minds those -sin's which have grieved the Holy Spirit frem ih, and to call upon you .to abase yourselves before God,” &c. These aro solemn phrases; and there are more of the same loaor; and they fairly excite the expectation that the evils to be enumerated are of the most heinous character.—some clear and unequivocal offenses against the decalogue. Let the Presbytery itself give the names.— “Preßbytcry have therefore learned with pain and sorrow that Borne, ibe heads of families, have opened their houses dancing, and some of our youthful members have turned aside to the sinful pleasures of the world in resorting to frequent parties, where carnal mirth and jollity, ' in the form of silly plays and promiscuous danc ing is the order of the evening’s experience.’' Now I cannot refrain fritn intimating just here, that “in view of abounding iniquity in tho land,” as seen in the criminal records and local reports, the Presbytery might have given their, circulars a different lone, and rejoiced in that they were unable to detect any greater abera (ions from righteousness than is shown in the impulsive art of dancing in family parlies where music b not prohibited. But instead of (bis the Presbytery hjvvo invoked the authority ami de nunciations of Synods and general‘assemblies of the church against this amusement, so that what ever of incredulity a first look at the caso-mmy have justified, there is really no room to deubt (heir sincerity. Having now ascertained the truo nature of ihc case presented in this circular, to wil: that Janciug »« sinful, 1 propose to show, by parity of reasoning, (had it is not. And my task will be seen to bo an cosy one, when I acknowledge that I have the arguments furnished to my baod in (he writings of Rcr. Dr. Junkin, Rev. l)r. Dewey, the Princeton Review, and olhvrs, iu justification of Slavcholding. These arc author * Dies which the fathers of the circular, I am per suaded, will Tegard with Tespect. In reprodu cing the arguments referred to, 1 shall simply exchange names, placing “dancing” for “slave holding'' or “slavery” and the man and woman in “promiscuous'.' dancingf for the master nn>l hlavc. Atu! 1 hope it is not too much to expect that, as i lie proofs and reasoning have been held sufficient to set the cbkrck right before the -world on the question ofTlavefy'lliey ought to go fnr to put at rest the stil| uuseUled subject of daocing. Happily for this occasion, 1 am spared the labor of condensation, for the authors themselves have anticipated, and/provided for the common relafiuncc to wadingUhrough prosy pages on a plain subject, by firing the gist and pith of (heir own discourses in the form of syllabus. Fur this they have my hearty thanks. Dr. Junkin. —“Let us here sum up. Fire pro positions have been demonstrated from tit* Word of God. I. That tlanciny existed during the period over which tbe Old Testament history extends. 11. That the Law of Moses permitted the He brews to dance. MI. That the relation [of partners] might, io certain oases, . .IV and V 1 omit, and ndd VI. ‘‘That. God has the OUTesift ment psombited dancing. Tbe relation of part ners is nowhere condemned as a sin, and forbid den to exist. If any mao affirm the opposite, let him adduce the proof—let us have tbe lext of the Old Testament to condemn it.” “But now, sir, I fearlessly affirm that thereos not a text in the New Testament which forbids dancing. There is not a sentence in the New. Testament which, by n fair and just interpreta tion, gives ground for the logical inference that dancing i 9 inconsistent with t tie Cbrislian pro fession and cbaracter.” ’’There is no power on earth—no authority in the cbnrcb to make dancing or not dancing a term of communion, or condition of admissiun to tbe privileges of the church.” “What, then, have we gained by Ibis whole argument? Simply this —that danciog—the re lation of partners— l -not, you will observe, [any violence; not any cruel treatment] any rude jesting; not any obscene gestures; but simply tho relation, it tolerated in the Holy Scriptures So far Dr. Jnnkin. And I now see (hat bis statements contain substantially all that 1 had prepared quoting from (he other authority men tioned. I shall therefore, on account of space, omit much which is now before me, trad which would hove added strength - to the argument, or at least shown coincidence of opinion. The Rev. Dr. Dewey summed up his argument as follows: “Tbe relation is' not an essential instant, invariable transgression of the moral law.” ! may remark on this, that it i 9 not easy to comprehend how tho “relation” could be a “transgression.” A summary proposition ol the Princeton lit oiVtr, is, that “what God boa at any time sanc tioned cannot he a sin in itself.” 1 am sure I need not detain you here in (his grave argument, to. slate, that no action what ever is a sin in itself. , It is circumstaocea, motive and intent, which give quality to actioos. Haring* thus furnished what I am satisfied will be deemed proof sufficient that dancing is not sinful, always premising (hat the same ar guments in behalf of Slavery are conclusive, l willingly (run to the experience of others to amplify the argument; and to conceive how the learned Doctors, on whom I have drawn for my weapons, coaid expand a subject of this nature over a very large surface; precluding altogether the insertion here, of Intelligible extracts. Floating tub .Leviathan. — Yesterday after noon tho tong-protracted .process of launching this vessel was happily brought tq a successful termination, and tbe Leviathan was floated off her ways and towed to -her moorings in the river. The weather was fine, clear and calm, with scarcely any breeze, and what little there was all in favor pf the vessel and a high tide. Tho tide ran up with unusual swiftness, and as the flood relieved the weight upon the Isunchiug irays, some of the hydraalio machines were set to work for the lost time, io push-'the motnter as far as possible into the center of the river. She moved easily, and with auoh a low rate of pres sure that a short time gave an advance of 80 inches, which showed that more Han half the cradles were quite pushed off the Ways and rested on the river bottom. At 1J the men in tho row-boats stationed along side observed that she no longer rested on the cradles—that she was, id fact, afloat, bnt, of course, the transition was so gradual that few were aware of it until the tugs began steaming ahead, and showed that at last she was fairly nndor way. Then the cheers which arose from the yard and fronUke deoks, frpm the boats in the river, ohd the cxews of the ships, at anchor up and down the stream, spread the great news for and wide, and thus under the most favorable circumstances, the Leviathan commenced her firs? voyage on he Thames.—^Q^ o7l TYmw, Ftb.\. Washisotos, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1855.—The Special Kansas Co in mi ties of the House met this evening. All the members were present. Mr. Harris, Chairman of the Committee, proposed to investigate the recent transactions in Kansas, with a view of obtaining fall and certain infor mation about affairs there. The Lecompton ma jority laid all his propositions on tho tabic. Mr. Morrill ( Vt.) then offered, as a test, a reso lution proposing to summon and examine wit* nesses whose knowlcdge-of events in Kansasconld not be questioned, s'uch as Robert J. Walker, F. P. Stanton, John Calhoun and Jack Henderson, whose examination, as they are in the city, or at no great distance, would not consame much time or cost much money. He also mored that all the returns and other papers pertinent to the case should be sent for. Mr. Stephens argued at great length against Mr. Morrill's resolution, and moved to lay it upon the table. Mr. Letcher wh9 not quite prepared to go so far as Mr. Stephens in smothering investigation, nod moved to postpone the vote on the resolution till next Wednesday, to which time the Commit tee adjourned. The pressure of public opinion is beginning to tell on Speaker Orr, who has national aspirations, and is not disposed to sacrifice his prospects at the dictate of Sectional fanaticism. He is exert ing Ms personal influence to mollify the Com mittee which he himself packed under the pres sure of the extremists of his party. The. Representatives of three or four of the Slave Stales are preparing a manifesto, threat ening disunion in case Lecompton does not pass. —Dispatch to Tribune. jFot Rent.
