The Western Penitentiary.—We acknowl edge tho receipt of the Annual Report of the Board of Inspectors of the Western Penitentiary for 1857. It came to hand at so late an hour on Wednesday, that we could not on that day com mand the time to give the facts contained in the s&id report so thorough a review and analysis os we desire. Tho Inspectors’ report gives a sketch of the valuable improvements in tho buildings, which have been made during the year, from and within tbe limits of an appropriation made by the last Legislature. A new engine house and stack have bcenbnilland all necessary machinery and fixtures introduced. Tbe prison was on tire t wice during the year—once, in July last, by ac cident, and subsequently set ou fire by an incen diary from without. Tbe damage was not very groat'in either instance. The Warden’s report is characteristic. It is very brief, plain and to the point. During the year enduring Jan. 1858, 87 convicts were re ceived and 71 discharged—-50 by expiration of sentence, seven by pardon aud five by death. Number in prison January 1, 187, four of that number being females. Tbe whole number re ceived since the opening of the prison, July 1, 1820, is 2030. Of these, 170 U were whitc.mnles: 35 white females; 259 colored males; 40 colored females. So much for Major Beckham’s Report. Dr. Pollock, the Physician to tbe institution, and Rev. Thos. Crumpton, Moral Instructor, make valuable aud interesting reports of matters in their respective departments to which are ad ded such suggestions as their experience and ob servations demand. To these we may recur at another and more convenient time. Tne Cvi’Loi'Ktma.—Wehavesceo a proof sheet of the ediiiou of Appleton’s Cyclopedia now in press, and extract the following in reference to Allegheny City, concerning which place there was a mistake iu the edition we have heretofore noticed in these columns: From the Ken- American Cyclopedia—Revised Edition: AlUyheny City—An important manu facturing city in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, on the right bank of (he Allegheny river at tbe junction of this the Monoagahela. Denny's Case.—Judge M’Clure gave this case to the jury yesterday. The charge was consider ed ae being adverse to the prisoner. Jlis Honor evidently had small faith in the defence of insan ity set up by the counsel in behalf of Denny. There are three or four persons ou thisjury who were also in that which passed on the case of Richards, indicted for tbe same offence witli Denny, and acquitted him. We did not learn lust evening thaL a verdict had been returned, and it was thought that those who found a verdict of acquittal for Richards would stand fo* the same dn the case, of Denny. Cocrt or Quarter Sessions.—A mao, Hoover, imprisoned since July, on two indictments for stealing, was brought into CourL As the pros ecutor was not there, and the evidence was not very strong against hiiq;, a nolle prosequi was en tered and the defendant discharged. The case of the Commonwealth vs. John Coop, indicted for perjury, was next in order for trial. Ihe non-appearance of the accused, who«e bail of SI .000 hud been entered by Mr Galway, oc casioned some delay. A process was issued to bring the defendant into Court. The Banner and Advocate'anys that the Mana gers of the Asylum for the Insane, after having made a careful examination of all the different sites proposed for this Asylum, have at length decided to locale it on the farm of the late lion J ; Bruce Backhouse, on the bank of tbe Ohio river, and seven miles from ibis city, by way of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Rail road.
