JOII.Y SCOTT, of Boss Township, election, Tuesday, January 26th. Tickets! Tickets!! Tickets for the special election to-day can be had at this office. Let the,Committees aeo that each ward is abundantly supplied. Odb acknowledgements aro doe, and ore here by tendered to the City Councils, for the very flaUeriogvote by which last night they elected the Datlt Gazette to be one of the official papers of this city for the current year. THE ELECTION TO-DAY. This is tho day set apart for the special elec tion for a member of the Assembly in place of J. C. Backhouse, deceased. Tho Republican nominee, Joint Scott,. Esq., is a gentleman in every way worthy of the united support of his parly. He is honest, competent and faithful; a sterling Republican &ndji_ trustworthy man. lie is well known nil oyer-the county, and- he has the cordial respect of all who know him. The Republican majority in the county is an dbubtetT; but the splnt of apathy is apt to rale cn such occasions as these, and it is from this and this only that we have anything to fear.— , The locofocos liaje a natural aptitude for turn ing cut at elections, while Republicans have a constitutional laziness which operates the other way. We hope they will rouse themselves suffi ciently to get over it, to-day. It Is but little trouble, in these cities, to go to au election. The polls are easily reached, there is Tery little business doing, nobody has any thing ou hands sufficiently weighty to keep him engaged all day, and it is as lit tle as a genuine Republican con do to go to tho polls of his dis trict to-day and voto for Jons.. Scott. It will cost neither Lime .nor trouble, and. the gratifica tion of having given a Republican vote is more than n recompense for all the labor it will en tail. Then there will bo the additional gratifi cation to-morroW of knowing that we hare whipped the locofocos once more. That, of it self, ought to be a sufficient inducement. In the present crisis of political affairs, every election, however insignificant it may otherwise be thought, and every manifestion of public opinion, has great weight. The success of a locofoco, 'to-day, in this Republican county, would bo bailed ns a pro-slavery Buchanan tri umph all over the land. It would stiffen the backbones of the Lecompton swindlers and do more to giro them hope of successfully hood winking the people, than anything else that conld happen. Shall such a' result be per mitted ? Will any Republican, through laziness or inadvertence, suffer it to be accomplished through lack of his vote to the contrary ? Wc put these questions to every Republican reader of the Gazetit. We therefore appeal to every Republican to ge to the polls and givo aid he can to the accomplishment of a Republican triumph to-cUy. See that efficient men aro at every poll; that abundance of tickets are provided; and that nothing is left undone to bring out every acces sible voter. Fidelity to our principles demands this much from everyone of us. Tue Awrairrea-r B pare n o? Sxhator Hale.— The people of the North are ’charged by South ern with being unac quainted with those nice rules of etiquette, which make up of all the graces io that sunny South which romance so delights to celebrate. This artlole however, one would judge ed for home consumption, -for certainly Mr- Brooks did not bring his fine sense of the “am enties” away from his plantation to Washington. 80, the other day, when Hon. John P. Hole was delivering the great speech against the Bred Scott decision in Lhe Senate, a correspondent eays, the few Southern Senators who remained in the Chamber gathered in a group, and mani fesledtheir disrespect by loud and animated con versation. The annoyance was not noticed by , Mr. Hale. The galleries, however, neTer flag ged in eagor .attention, end the universal verdict of the audience was that the speech was one of the greatest ever heard in the Senate. The noble and'eloqaent de fence of liberty, the common law, and the spirit of the Constitution, by Senator Hale, will sur vive, long after the Darn Scott Decision will have been smothered by volumes of counter de cisions.” The Richmond papers are very indignant tlmt the students of the University of Virginia have invited the Uon. Henry Davis to deliver an ad- dress before the Literary Societies of that Inati _ tution. The harden of the objection to Mr. Davis is that he has uttered sentiments not pal atable to the South. And he became melancholy, because custo- I mers were shy and times were hard, j. And he said: Lo: lam ruined, and the sen- I sation is disagreeable i And my ruin is the more painful to bear, be ! cause it is slow in progress, even as water doth (gradually become bolter in the pot-wherein the lobster boileth, until the crastaceous creature t shrieketh out his soul in anguish, j Lo! it is better to be ruined quickly then to endure this slow torture. 1 will give my money away to the poor man —even to the poorest, which is be who prinlotli newspapers, and I wiU ! shat up my shop and wrap myself in the sackcloth of desolation, and pass my days in .the purlieus of broken banks, cursing the hardness of the times and. rendiog my garments. Aftd the bowlings of Rome shall be as the dulcet sound of dulcimers, and they who blow the flutes and instruments of music, compared to din I will make to the cars of tho wicked—even in the ears of the bank directors. And even as be said, so did he ; fur bo was not like other men’s sons who are foolish and know it not, and they say they will do so and so. performing that which is contrary. For the sons of men are fickle, and he that id born of woman doth spite bis face by diminish ing the length of the nose thereof. And lo ! the printer—even he who did pub lish newspapers—was made glad by tho bounty of him who sold wholesale and retail; and ho did sound his praises and print them moreover, and did blow the trumpet of fame respecting that man’s dealings from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same. And he-*-cven the printer of papers—did magnify and enlarge npon the stock of goods which the trader had in bis store, and did pub lish the variety and the excellence, and the newness, and the beauty, and the cheapness thereof, till the people—yea! all of them, far and near, were amazed. And they said, lo! this man hath gathered from the east and the west costly merchandize and wares of wondrous value —even tbework- j • of cuuning artificers—and we knew it Aiot. Uo 10, tiien. We will lay out our silver aud our gold in those things which the printer print eth of, and that which ho doth publish shall be ours. For this man’s merchandize is belter than the Lank notes of those who promiso to pay and therein he, even banks of deposit which beguile us of our money and swindle us liko sin. Cut that trader was still sad, and he said, the money that these people bring me for the goods in my store will I still give to the printer, and thus will I ruin myself; I will do that wjiich no man hath yet done in my time or before me. I will make the printer man, whom all men scorn for bi 9 poverty, rich, and he shall be clad in fine linen, and shall rejoice. And the sons of men shall seek him in the market place, and the sheriff shall shun him, aud the scoffers shall be rebuked, aud shall take off their hats to him that was poor. And he shall flash the dollars in the eyes of the foolish and shall eat bank note sandwiches. Yes, even shall ho light his pipe with railroad scrip and cast Ins spittle on the beards of other men, "For I will ruin myself, and he who advertises me shall enjoy my sabstonce. But lo! the tradiog man—even he who sold merchandize, become rich, and even as the un clean. beast lieth in the mire, so stirred he not by reason of much gold. And the people flocked to his store from the North. And from Ihe^Soutb. And from the East. And from the West. And the printer rejoiced, and his fat did abound. But the trader could not become poor; and his melancholy ceased, and the smiles of happi ness wore upon his face. And his children did become mighty in the land by reason of the dollars which many of the people who read his advertisements had poured into that trader’s money bags Bidle Ajjsivkb.haiit. —Pursuant to notice, the 40th Anniversary of the Young Men's Bible So ciety of Pittsburgh was fitly celebrated in Dr. Howard’s Church last night, James Robb, Esq., President of the Society, in the chair. These reports haring been read, Iter. John Douglass. D. D., made a most impressive and instructive address, which was listened to by the large and highly intelligent audience with the most profound attention. It abounded in passages of eloquence, and was in itself a com* pend, of the history and the story of the tri umphs of the Scriptures in every land where it is known and where he&thcblsm and Popery have not bindeFcd its sway. Wo would like to see the address in print. The congregation, after Dr. Douglass had con* clodcd.sung tho Psalm—The Lord’smy Shepherd. . Rev. David J. Verkefl, then made a short and most touching, address in which ho particularly extolled the grand old. English Bible, in its massive and sounding Saxon. He was listened' to throughout with profound.attention. The adoption of tho Reports, a chut, and the BenodicUoo, the latter by Rev, Dr. Howard con claded the exercises of the ovoning all which were of tho most delightful interest. i A LJ6T of desirable Bank and Insurance Com*' pany .Stocks are to be sold this evening at No. 64, Fifth street, by Mr. Davis. \ Arrival orSiLvxt—Twentymo tons of ingots of silver - 'srrived et the V.
