Terms, as usual, strictly cash. J. L. CABNACIII/X. most UTAIL —By the way of California we have some interesting news from the Mormons at the Sidi Lake. A letter from the city of that name, published In a California paper, contains thelollevrßig item : "There are a great many of. the brethren out upon the road, somewhereabout Fort Bridger. The United States troops are at Ham's Fork, within one and a half day's journey of them, and seven dayi from here. There are, compa nies going out from here 'every day. The com pany I belong to has not been called upon yet, but I expect it will be, for the Governor has declared there shall be no troops conic, into these valleys while there is a possibility of keep ing them out, and should they ho able to force their way in, we will every man leave his house and improvgments in ashes, and take to the mountains. There is somewhere about three thousand soldiers and seven hundred wagons at Naml Fork." Here we have a view of the operations of the Mormons. Tho whole military force of the set tlements his been organized, embodied and dis ciplined, and reinforcements aro constantly sent out to aid to aid those already. in the field in harassind the government troops, destroying trains, etc. In a sermon preached en the 13th of September, Brigham Young said "I shall treat every army and every armed .company that attempt to come hero as a mob. [Tho congregation responded, 'Amen.') You might as well-tell me that y i p can make hell a powder-house, as to tell mo that you could let an army in hero and have peace, and I intend to tell them and show them this, if they do not keep away.. By takingothis course you-will find that everyman and woman feels happy, and they say, 'all is right, all is well and I say that ear enemies shall not slip the bow on 'old Bright's neck' again. "I have told you that if this people - will love iheir religion, nil will bo well ; and I have told you that if there is any man or woman that is not willing to destroy anything and everything of their property that would be of use to an en ' emy if left, I want them to go out of the terri tory.; and I again say so to-day, that when the I time comes to burn and lay waste our improve r meats, if any man undertakes to shield his ho will be sheared down, for judgment will be laid to the lino and righteousness to the plummet,' Now the faint*hearted can go in peace, but should that time come, they must net interfere. Before I will suffer what I have in times gone by, there shall not be ono building, nor one foot of lumber, nor a stick; nor a tree, nor a particle of grass and hay, that will burn, left in reachof our enemies. lam sworn, if driven to eitrem ity, to utterly lay waste, in the name of Iltrael's God." On the succeeding Sunday, September 13th, Brigham Young preached, and said: , '.ft is a pretty bald atand o for this people to tale, to say that they will not be controlled by. the - corrupt administrators of our general got eminent. We will be controlled by them if they will be controlled by the Constitution and laws. but they will not. ' , lf the troops are now this side of Laramie, remember-that the Sweetwater is this side of that place: They must have some place to win ter, for they cannot come through hero this season. We could go out antruse them up, and it would not requirstifty mento do it. But prob ably we shall not have occasion to take that course ; for we do not want to kill men. They may winter in peace, at some place east of us ; but when spring comes they must go back to the States, or at any rate they must leave the moun tains." We already know, by the acts of the Mormon bands in the mountains, that these declarations were not idle. The Mormon chiefs have waged War als'well as talked it. The gderilla parties have harassed ouritroopo very much by cutting off their, supplies) A Monsieur Mageau, who has just arrived at EL Louis overland, in forty days from Salt Lake City, says ho met the gov yrrurteut trains blocked up in the snow, the cat tle dying, and the officers and men gloomy and desplndent. Ile adds that the Mormons were makingAhernost active preparations to repel the troops. - and that Young had stated in publie council his'lntention to harrass the army until the latter iii* r in sufficient force to overwhelm him, When he WO4d burn Salt Lake -City, and lead his people away, NicAs.aas.,—San Juan Del Norte, Xor. 30, 1857.—Another reign of terror has begun in this most unfortunate of unfortnnatc countries, and what the end will be, who can tell f William Walker has returned to enact again' scenes of heartlessness and barbarity rinCh"tia only himself 'and Ms followers are capable of. -.Me arrived off this town on the 24th Dien, in the old steamer Fashion, direct from Mobile. Previous to enter ing the harbor, the steamer ran down to the mouth of the river Colorado and landed some 40 men, who - proceeded up that river and into the San Juan, about twenty miles above this town. IThe steamer then returned, and, entering the harbor hero, ran alongside of an old hulk which serves at a sort of wharf, near the Company's office at Punta Arenas, and before a boat from the 11. S. ship Saratoga could reach there, ail the men had scrambled on shore with their arms in their hands. They at once set about making themselves at home on the Company's premises, appropriating anything they' could lay their bands on to their own purposes, as is their cue. tom; but upon Mr. Scott, the agent, making the fact known to Capt. Chatard; he at once [miffed Walker that if he did not immediately remove his men from the Company's premises, he would open his guns upon him with shot and shell. lie also Informed him•that, if any of his men dared I to molest the property of any Americans he would, without any further notice, treat them to a sum. cleat quantity of shells to teach them that no farther robbery by them would be tolerated. De Brisset, who has been hanging about here, living on ctiarity, has started up the river with a party of Walker's men, to intercept and rob the Costa Rican mail, now about duo here. I have just heard that Lieut. Cilley, of the U. S. ship Saratoga, went ashore at Punta Arena, this morning, and that Walker sent to him and ordered him to leave immediately. Mr. Gilley replied that he.pas not only an American citi zen, but an officer of the United States Navy, and had as much right to land on Punta Arenas as any other person. This was reported to Walker, who sent again to Mr. - Cilley that ho must leave or he would conspel hint to, remarking that Mr. Cilley had but, three men, and Walker upward of a hundred, and that the ,folly of relistance must ire apparent. Nearly one-third of the men now with Walker are said to be, discontented, and ready to return in• the same steamer that brought them here, could they get away. The Navy Department ought to be getting ships ready to take these worthy individuals back to their homes, or was dons a few months ago. t A hitter from ono of the officers of the United States eloop-of-war Saratoga; to a fellow officer on the United States steam-frigate Wabash, son ','Walker has again landed at Greytown. Ills steamer, the Fashion, passed right under our stern_ There were only a few Visible miter deck. While we were wondering who the devil she could be„ or what was her errand, she hauled alongside of a hulk near Scott's place, and land ed Walker and a large number of hie followers. Walker subsequently found oneof our officers on shore,.;ganzting, when ho pereniptorily ordered him to go back to his.ship. The officer refused, flaying he was an officer of the United States whercupen_Walker_told him that if he did I not go be *odd compel Idm to leaie. The offi cer finally did come. Our fellows say that' he ought to have refused to go, point blank, and then if Walker had used violence wa should have an excuse for pitching into, him. We are afraid that Cap — rain Chatard will be conaluartialed for not preventing Walker from landing. Capt. Cha lard has driven Walker and his fellows away from'ltlr. Scott's place, and has taken measures to protect Greytown and-the Transit Company's property from the piratim"---N.- Y. Tra.
