A Wire :SHOT III: ITER HrSILTD.—John F. Cole, residing in the Brd Ward, Allegheny City, on Monday night, at about 8 o'clock. shot his wife In their own house, and it is feared inflict .ed uporther a mortal wound. The bullet took effect In the face, just beside the nose, and was extracted near the base of the skull. She was conveyed from her house to that of her mother, Oreatrake, who also resides in Allegheny, on Morgan street, between Lacoek and the Canal. The facts in the east, us re ore informed, are us fOkb)W9 Cole has become, thrdugh the influence 'ut . rum and opium, very much of n maniac, his mental and physical constitution both having been un dermined and almost rained by the use of the liquid and the drug. His home, if home it be Milled, bas therefore beon.mode a very unhappy one. Several times the wife has been obliged to leave him. .Corly in the lest fall he was impris oned for surety ~1 the peace, on information of Mrs. Cole, whom lie had then tried to kill. He has tried to commit suicide by poison. When in jail it in said he endeavored to shoot a fellow prisoner. In the October term of Court when be was brought np for trial milli° charge above referred to, his wife did net appear against him and he was released from custody. On promise of better behavior his rife again consented to live with him, but the frequent recurrence of his habits of potation tlestroyd the pence of the household lie has lately been a clerk at the freight office of the R., Ft W. & C. it. It., and within a few days has been indulging even more freely than usual in intoxicating drinks. On Monday morning Mrs. Cole states that they had come to the conclusion to separate, and to that end had agreed to divide the furniture in the house equally between thein. She saw no more of Colo until at evening about 8 o'clock he came to the house : knocked at the door and was ad mitted. ..Going in he looked about the house a little and them-drawing his pistol fired it in her face with the effect which we have mentioned above. The course at the bullet was turned from an immediate contact' with the burin by striking the jaw bone and thus passing along the neck, slopped near the carotid artery. • • Cole was a respectable man once. Rum is in his case as it has been inn thotisand other cases, his ruin. lie Is by trade a carriage maker; he was at one time, I,n • the cemmiision business; subsequently ho was; employed on the river as a aterk and was afterwards captain of the steamer John McFadden. - Latterly, as we have said above, he' has been a clerk at. the Railway Station. 'When tho officers went to arrest him on Mon day, he showed fight, and snapped:MS pistol at efficerCelboun, who would doubtless have been killed, but for the harmless explosion of the percussion -cap. He was taken before Mayor. DehaTen where be acknowledged his resistance to the officers, and the . tact that ho had shot his wife, expressing his regret that he had not killed her at once. lie was • committed on a charge of assault andbattery.withinteutto kill, and Is added now to the other half score of persons in jail under various charges of crime. Mrs. Cole is said to be a very quiet peaceable woman, and has the sympathy of all her neigh bore. Cole is about 45 years of age, and the 1 father by this wife of three children. —Since writing the above we are informed that Cole was not intoxicated, nor was he labor- ing _under the immediate and direct effects of ' ardent spirits. Some say that jealousy is the cause of the dreadful deed. All the neighbors, as far as We could learn after some inquiry, be l i - Here that there is not the least shadow of ground for any thing like even a suspicion against Mrs. .Cole. The woman has grand children, and has • . ever maintained, even up to this age, a spotless reputation. DEATa WA.lllUla79.—Wa learn from a private sourco which - is entitled to credence, that Oov. Pollock has signed the death warrant of Henry Fife and Charlotte Jones, authorizing their exe cution to take place on Friday, the 12th day of February, 1855.
