The reason assigned for their not voting is this: If they vote at all, they sanc tion the work of the Convention and vote prac tically for she constitution, wtilich rat(ties the pre times buck:rill:slpm! to.stneent," lion whether slavery shall exist or s'rulinus in de Territory is not touched, Jrre mains as an 'ruling. on:Nation, noi. its Ong way greeted or alsolished,,— This is true. The Alen-ueo 15 undoubtedly right, audits candor is a withering rebuke to those in the North who are striving to mislead public opinion. The Scene In like fienale tpr.treipontlatec th.• 11111vIelptils Econing WASIIINGTON, Dee. n.—Thero has rarely been a wore interesting scene than that witnessed in the Senate Chamber to-day, when the debate on the Kansas question was opened by Senator Douglas. The reports give on outline sketch, which is faithful no for as it goes. But no reports ran fairly represent the great points of the picture ; the prowess, the skill and manli ness of the Illinois Senator, and the pitiable dis romfiture of the rash Pennsylvanian, Mr. Bigler, who insanely entered the lists as champion for the President. Among iho many Pennsylvanians present there was not one who did not feel ashamed that the President had no better man to rely on. Even Mr: Bigler himself .felt his weakness and while aiming to be a leader; felt compelled to disavow his leadership in order to give it an appearance of strength. lie was signally de feated in every encounter with the Illinois Son• tor and both in argument. and InTepartee he wastotally confounded. One of the most striking scenes of the session was that where - . Bigier dirldged the fact that there had been' private interviews of leading I Democratic politicians, at Mr. Douglas's house in Washington; during the Presidential cam paign ; in the course et which it was resolved that, for some consideration not nomad, a Con. ftergetareas aho(ll4l3* propared.and not submitted to the people 4 Mr. Bigler admitted this, and intimated thatlit was with the partici pation of Mr. Douglas. I But Douglas put him to the proof, and it was melancholy to see the painful embarrassment pf Bigler and his terrible confusion es he was Compelled; in . answer to the indignant questions of Douglas, to admit that the Latter had nothing to do with this secret understanding. ',Bigler and all the Dem ocratic leaders ought to be still more confused at this evidence that, while the people were made to believe that a Conifitution should he framed and submitted to the people, the partymanagers had secretly resolved that IL should not be so submitted. The deception of the last campaign is thus made more apphrent than ever. It was indeed mortifying to every Pennsylva nian to witness first the spectacle of their Sena tor ahamelesely avowing a participation in such a fraud as this. But thewretched embarrassment ofthe man, when cornered and compelled tore tract his charges by Senator Douglas was still more distressing. None but spectators of the scene can appreciate the effect of Douglas's scornful manner and Bigler's pitiable discomfit ure It is probable that no such scene was ever before witnessed lathe Senate Chamber. Thus far the strength of the contest on the Kansas Constitution is altogether with the Dou glas wing of the liimocrecy. The President has been most triumphantly answered, but he has suf ered. most' of all from the injudicious management and th&greatweakness of Mr. Big ler, who undertook tisnstain him. By this time Mr. Bigler would probably be very glad to re tire from the prominent position into which be so inconsiderately rushed. The confusion of parties, which was guest enough before the session opened, is even great er since the reception of the Message and the discussion of to-day. There are all sorts of heart-turnings and disorders among people of alt parties, and the Pennsylvanians have rather more then their share of these, fti well as of the public interest excited by them. In the strife about Cabinet and other places dispensed by the President, there have been some sore places caused which are likely to be troublesome for some time to come. Among the affairs of this kind there is ono relating to lion- .1. (Haney Jones. member of Congress from Becks county, that ispartieularly interesting. It will be remembered that Mr. Jones was, last. Spring, a prominent candidate for a cabinet office, and it will also be remem bered that he did nottet it. It will also be, re membered that, failing in this, Mr. Jones turned Lis attention to obtaining political or - other advantage by other Meatis. lathe Fall it was announced, with quitea nourish, that Mr. Jones, t his plain, unosten t ati Ma representative of plain, unostentatious Old l'rks, had rented a house in Washington for, 4.0000 a year Just the amount of his compensation as a member. This rather startled Old Beelks, and inquiries were made in Washington iniegard to the affair. By some means or other t)iet contract for the lease 'of the house nab produled and bore on its face coroborration of a reirr that. had become cur rent that Mr. Jones, i (!taking the house, was setting up the busine#, of a broker of public offices; for the two pert is Who went his security for the payment of Llielient wore prominenenp plicants for Import/a of f ices—the city Post Office and Ito Marahlaship of the District of lr Columbia. No doubtil . Jones was to derive i much advantage frata his arrangement. Hodgson went nut again and ,came up with she Ring's sons and grandson. lie had only 100 native horsemen of his own regiment with him, and the enemy about 10,000, 1,000 of whom were fully armed Sepoys. • Hodgson saw it was of no use attack ing them. so he sent an emissary to tell the princes that the game was up with them, and that they lead better surrender,-which they did after some time, and came up to Hodgson, who immediately surrounded the carriage with his men. He sent for their arras, and, after hesita ting some time, these also were given•up, with some elephants and lots of stores. On reaching the gaol Hodgson ordered the princes out of the vehicle , they, imagining all was eight for them selves, began (native-like) to talk,' and say they hoped there might be an enquiry into their eon- duct. Hodgson said 'cheeproks' (be quiet,)and ordered them to take off ail their fine daises. When this was done he said, 'Now get in dgain,' and ordered the driver to proceed. He then beckoned to one of his men and asked for a car %bine, and, with his own hand, shot each and all of the three princes. He then took their bodies into the city, and laid them out for.in spection in front of the Hotswallie, where these wretches had laid out their victims during the massacre." SLAVE Pouna.—lt is curious to observe how questions connected with slavery govern everything in Washington. Robinson of Indi ana was a prominent candidate for Clerk of the Rouse, but it leaked out tharhe had voted when in Congress against the ,Fugitive Slave .Law, and he was dropped. Allen of Rlinols, his com petitor, was .supposed to be against the Kansas bogus Constitution, and before he could get the nomination, he had to declare that ho was in fa vor of it, and went with the Administration. .
