Per contra, the Press of Saturday in an article
of a column shows that the slavery clause or

Cass. STETSON, President of the Ohio Life

He says it will require months, yet, to straight

Yr& learn from Jos. Chandler, of Campbells
wale, that a terrible tragedy was enacted at
Nectarine, Adair county, on Friday last. It
appears that Mr. Redmond, a storekeeper at
Neatarille, had circulated a report against
party of men, one of whom was a young man
named Mr. Whorter, the sou of a highly respec;
table citizen, that they were counterfeiters.
They heard of this, and laid a plan to decoy
Redmond from his home and murder him. Mr.
nosier divulged this to Redmond. On Friday
the party made an attack on Redmond and his
friends in Neataville, among whom ifaa .Red
mond's son and Mr. Whorter. Nearly fifty
shots were fired. The elder Redmond, was shot
through the heart and instantly killed. Mr.
Whorter was shot in the back of the bead, and
it is thought cannot recover. The affair had
created tremendous excitement —Lou. Jour. 4th.
Tun drains upon the United States , Treasary
for the last few weeks has removed all appre
hension of a surplus, and we may therefore ex
pect a comparatively short session, there being
no money to quarrel over. The new members
of Congress, it is said, will probably draw nine
months' pay on the meeting of the first session
next week. The members of the House are salaried
at $3,000 per annum. The term of the present
Congress dates from the 4th March Ist., and
the construction put upon the law is, that three
fourths the, first year of the term will be paya
ble, if demanded, on the commencement of ac
tual service, the first Monday in December. If
so, the Treasury will be drawn ppm at once for
$500,000 or $600,000 for this object. One of
the earliest acts of Congress, it Is believed, will
be to authorize an issue of treasury notes, bear
ing a nominal intererest of say one mill per
annum, to supply the deficiencies intke revenue.
HAD ma ows war.—Franklin Holden, a good
looking merchant of Pen Yen, N. Y., has been
sentenced at Albany to five years in the State
prison for forgery. The Argus says that just
as court was about to adjourn for the term, Hol
den made his appearance and peremptorily de
manded trial, assuming the air of an injured
individual. Bat that he came forward in a
manner so bold his trial would not have taken
place, and it is more than probable that he would
have escaped prosecution forever on this charge.
But he insisted on being tried, he would not
allow so base a charge to overshadow his "fair
fame" any longer. He was gratified, found
guilty, and was sentenced to the State prison
for five years.
KANSAL—...The Lawrence Herald of Freedom
of the 14th ult., speaking of the (/resent emer

'The platform of the Big, Springs Convention

tain that peaceable shall jail.' We occupy
precisely that position ; and, before Heaven, we
solemnly assert that we are ready .to join the
people of Kansas in a crusade against, our ene
