Tun SYNOD/CAL Co#XUrrtoli.—A Convention of clergymen and Elders from the Synods of Pittsburgh, Allegheny.Clly, - Wheeling and Ohio is In sesOlonl at the church of Mr. Paxton in this city. Ther are some Ami: or 900 gentlemen. present in it, and the Riv. Dr. loge, of Caitlin . tins, Ohio,President. The exercises are such as l it are elle idea to excite new zeal in the cause .of religion and :enkindle anew the spirit of brotherly I re and kindness among the clergy. The coldness in the churches and the almost total abse'nee of revivals in the various fields of labor are bitterly deplored, and the object of the Convention 1 for prayer for a revival of the spirit of holiness in the hearts of the ministers of truth„thet It may Shine through them upon the flocks which they serve. The Presbyterian body to which these clergy men belong have, in our opinion, sacrificed tort desire' for peage which is no peace, and union • which has 'not the first characteristic of a cor dial union about it, their most potent agencies for good in this land. It has surrendered the American Tract Society into the hands of the weakest of its supporters ; it has shorn the mil lion pages which It natters broadcast over the land, of pregnant truth that goes with logical tone home to every kind of crime in church or elate. It Wu tamely abandoned the right to speak, against the anti of all vllhitllies, Slavery. While for the month of August the contributions tram the North to the A. T. Society was $ lB ,- 000, from the South they were $3OO, and yet the South dictates to the vast body of religious, enlightened end anxiously lettering men, who , - sorrow over the dearth Intheihiarchesithat they shall and what they shill not say upon a ques tion that involves the breach of that law of love whose spirit informs and vivifies all the teach " .Dripspf Christ. • The pulpits of a large portion of the United States ireclaiin the exrtmple. of patriarche and prophets of old, es binding -in the, matter of holdingeloves: they defend Artery 113 a noces eary and salutary prop in the basis of a good and well ordered - society, while another portion, seedy the largirand more enlightened, deem any referenc.c to this subject,. as political preaching, unjust, improper and calculated to breed din: tension. _Unjust and improper to denounce what • caniaint : within Itself the germ and bud and fruit of every sin! which implies the separation of husband and wife, the sale of a brothel' in the church by-his brother and owner in the same! which denies to the slave, knowledge and an appreciation of the truth preached, and of the gospel as it is in its purity and holiness:— . While the church retains this leprous spot upon' her body, site will need to have these Conven tions, and they will have to be held until this 4tititlen be met fairly which is shaping itself - far the.near future:. They are more important • theta' trian those more generaltseetings together sneli:bodies as at Lexington this year— where the muter - -calls upon the Lord to bless souls.mid savathem, while the auctioneer plies Lla busy hainmer within sound of the church, selling men and women for whom Christ died as eIL ns for the king or the prince. It is slavery in the connection which it claims with the church, and with the immunity from denunciation which it demands from the clergy, that is producing coldness and carelessness throughout the churches of the free States. This allegation is true: it Is taking shnireTdelly end becoming more and more por tentous. It. Is going to 'be a peat question, sphinx-like, demanding an answer: what shall the answer be? 1 . CUT , OfTleEtte.—The Republican Committee have issued a call for a City Convention to corn irate candidates to be supported for City Offi cer! at the ensuing election. • The day for the primary meetings Is fixed for the 19th inst., and the Convention will assemble on the 23d. Now that this point is settled the intervening • time should be spent in carefully selecting trustworthy men as delegates to the City Con vention. If prudent, cautious and reliable men can be 'added to run, it seems to us, in view of the importance of selecting the best men as can , didatee, that the ward meetings should send del egates in uupledged, and leave the selection of a ticket to their discretion and good judgment. Of course, if they think proper to do otherwise we shall not complain ; _we only throw out the sug gestion for conalderation. The selection of candidates for Controller add City Treasurer ought to - be made with direct reference to the interests of the city. They are not offices with which to reward partisans, but offices of special importance to the citizens, to which none but men who can command the gen eral confidence should be - named—men of un doubted honor, capacity 'and Integrity. If the Republican Convention presents men of this stamp; the ticket it nominates will be invincible. It will carry every thing before it. The only hope of the democracy is, that we may make one or two weak nominations out of the three, and co give them oppoetattiti. We have no ap prehension that they will be gratified. For. Mayor, the only names so far presented are those of the present incumbent, Mr. Weaver, arid Wm. F.. Murdoch, of the Sixtli . ward. - For Controller, the name of Henry Lambert has been proposed by a correspondent of this paper, and we learn that he has consented in accept, if nom. 'lusted. The nettle of S. F. lifilb Bonhorst has also been mentioned. Roth of these gentlemen are well qualified, _For Treasurer, we have heard the names of S. A. Sargent, eif the Eighth ward, Aid. Steel; of the: Second, and Wm. Venom, of the Ninth ward. , . Nzw Yome.—The telegraph brings us the cheering news that the people of New York City , have risen superior to pirty'drill and defeated that arch Jacobin and demagogue, Fernando Wood. The total vote was 84,000-0,000 more than last year at the Presidential election, show ing that probably 5,000 illegal votes were polled, and all for' Wood. "Mr. Buchanan and his Cabinet, after 'reviewing tee whole subject again on Friday, stand a unit against Walker and in favor of sus taining the Convention. Not only do they accept that course as an inevitable duty; they go further, and commend as highly judicious the ingenious device by which the Convention seeks to cheat the people of Kansas out of an o pportunity to vote upon the entire Constitution. They justify it upon the presumption that the people of Kansas would reject the entire project if presented to them ; and thus they coneede their determination to exert the Federal power to force upon the people an organic law to which they are clearly opposed. I do not think that the President is quite so resolute in his determination to sustain (he Con vention as he was at first. There are indica tions that he begins to have some doubts of the policy,—although he committed himself so deep ly that it is difficult to see how he is to change front now. • REQUEST. —ln the Tennessee Senate, Mr. Ooodpasture presented a memorial from the citi- Sens of Scott county, asking to he released from taxation on account of the hard times, and that an appropriation of $400..1 or 55000 be made for their benefit. PLEASED To LEARN rr—The Tamps (Florida) Peninsular enjoys peculiar sources of satisfac tion. It says: "BLOOD frocuns OR NEGRO DROS.—We aro pleased to learn that. Gen. Carter has brought with him from Tallahassee some fine dogs, well practiced in trailing nrgross, and for service against the Seminoles." If Gin. Carter runs ehort of hounds he can recruit the number partially by enlisting the editor of the Peninrular. I Tits Paris correspondent of the Memphis 4.P. peal relates the following anecdote: "The son of a wealthy Jewish banker in London became much attached to a young Christian, with whom his faller opposed his union. hen the son found that the father could not be induced to give his consent to the match, he concluded to marry without it. The father then threatened to withold every shilling from him, thereupon the son replied, that, if thetather did not intend to give him anything, he would become a Christian, and according to the law, he would be entitled to ,one-half of his father's fortune. The father, much alarmed, Bew to his lawyer to - inquire whether such a law really was in existence; the lawyer's answer was In the affirmative, but adding that it be would band him over ten guineas, he would give ( him a plan by which he could frustratehis sop's 'plans. The ten guineas were quickly produced. "Now," said the lawyer, quietly pocketing the the money, "all that remains for you to do, is to become a Christian also, and the law will not obligeyou to leave your son a cent of your money." The Jew hurriedly seized his hat and left, the lawyer without any further remark. THE weekly Bank Statement shows a general expansion in all items excepting in loans, which are down about $490,000, notwithstanding the increased strbngth:of the Banks. This result II not due to any desire upon the part of these in stitutions to contract, but to the wol of 'offer ings of satisfactory paper. Many drilla Banks would gladly increase their lines by discounting first class paper, especially if based upon the movement of the crops, but such paper is not brought to them in sufficient quantities. Broadbrim saw the face of his wife • as she peeped through the half opened door, and rising with all the coolness of a general, thus addressed her: "Betsy, thee had better quit peeping, or thee will cause a disturbance in the 'family." This is an admirable illustration of the phil osophy of the bogus Democracy towards the Republicans. They perpetrate all kinds of roscalities and enormities, and when they find the Republicans peeping in on them, they turn round and tell us to keep quiet, or we shall cause a disturbance to the family, and "destroy the Union." • Tee Ironton Bank of Ohio, which latelf , re pulsed General E.
