The proportion of this class to the whole 11111.5113 of population is hardly realised.— They are not to be seen, like those of other pur aus, in all localities, bid, in general, are' segregated in clove communities by themselves, and when they come to be enumerated by the oroni-present census-taker, a grand total is ob tained which many aro not at all prepared to expect. The census of IMO shows that in New England over three hundred thousand peraons were engaged in manufacturing establishments NOw York about taco hundred thousand—in Pennsylvania one hundred itnd HUI thousand—and in other State nearly three hundred thousand— making nn aggregate of very nearly a bIILLION in the entire country. This number comprises those who are actually engaged in these mills ; if to them be added those who, an children or other family connections aro dependent upon the wages there earned, we get some adequate idea of the immense personal interests at stake in the prosperity of these establishments. The effects of the stoppage of manufactories might be presented impressively in the light of politi cal economy. The 'capital invested in them is four hundred and twenty-secen millions of dollars, and the value of their annual product over a thousand millions . and every one must see that the locking up of such a vast capital in idleness, and the cessation of such an amount of prodite tire industry, must tell with tremendous effect upon every material interest of the country.— But it is in its direct personal bearings that the subject excites the most painful concern.—N. IEAERE EMPIRE STATE OE TEE ICOERIE —A dense fog at New York mused several acci dents on Monday evening: ••The steamer Empire State, Captain Brayton, left her berth, North River, at five o'clock, with • , • !urge number of passengers, for Fall River. There being a heavy fog on the river, she sailed slowly, when at about half past five o'clock she struck a reef of rocks at the south end of Black well's Islmylr - slaving a hole in her bottom, and causing her to leak badly Captain 'Brayton immediately put about, and, running to the op osite sideof the ri rer, came in collision with the sloop Belle. lying at the foot of Thirtp,Eighth street, doing hut slight damage to the latter. Great excitement prevailed on the Empire State, as the water had reached her cabin floor when she struck the sloop, and a number of the pas sengers, at the risk of their lives, leaped on hoard of the sloop. Captain Brayton, wishifig to Sail shoal water, kept on until ho reached Twos ty-Second street, where he ran the steamer in. her bows nearly touching the tines: A bridge was then spoedily'ereeted, rind her passeugeis were all safely lauded. The damage to the Em pire State is not very great, and men were en gaged on hoard all of last night repairing her. She will be put in the dry dock to-dayi and Capt..
