President Buchanan ssw says it is a toyetery how anybody could ever have doubted his pre sent position on the subject of slavery=that the Dyed Scott decision is right, that the extension of slavery is legal, and that it constitutionally exists, and Congress has no power to prohibit it in the Territories. Below will be found a series of resolutions, drawn up and signed by Mr. Buchanan and oth ers, and adopted at a public meeting in Llncits ter, Pa., in the year lfllb. They are taken from the Lancaster /or , /hgracer of that year. "Con sistency is 11 jewel"—but all jewels are not equally bright or well set, and, by a figure of speech, have been sometimes located "in a swine's snot,' " Mr. Buchanan's consistency will speak for.itsell : Witsurs‘, The people of this State, pursuing the maxims and animated by the honeficience of the great founder of Pennsylvania, first gave effect to the gradual abolition of slavery by a national act, which bas not only rescued the un happy and helpless African, within their terri tory, from the demoralizing influence of shivery, but ameliorated his state and condition through out Europe and America. And, WHETICAIR, It would illy comport with those humane and Christian efforts to be silent spectators when this great cause of humanity is about to be agitated in Congress by fixing the destiny of the United States : therefore, Reinford, That the representativei in Congress from this district be, and they are hereby most earnestly requested to rise their utmost endea vors, as members of the national Legida!ure, to ~,iont the ,AnoreoTec of ,tarrry in any of the Terri lanes or nn-• States +4.lltr, ro, a r ean n i Ly c o a. gre., Rest.lced, an the opinion f this meetitig,) That, as the Legislature of th I s State will short ly be in session, it will be hi bly deserving of their wisdom and patriotism . to take into their early and most serious consideration the pro priety of instructing our representatives in the national Legislature to use its most zealous and strenuous exertions In inh i bit the existence of slay ..11, I/I any of the Terrotories or States which may hereafter be created by Congress; and that the members of the Assembly from this county be requested to embrace the earlist opportunity of bringing this subjei l. before both/Houses of the Legislature. The foregoing resoluttions, being read, were unanimously adopted; after which, the meeting adjourned. WALTER FRANKLIN Chairman. Attest: WM. JRNICINs, erttary A FOOL Loose.—The Decatur (ill.) Chronicle lute managed to hit upon the happiest display of what we may call the "unmitigated fool" that we remember ever to -have seen. Specimens of very ridiculous nonsense manufactured for fun are common enough ; but one got up with seri onsnevs and in the full faith that It is sensible and appropriate, is a real curiosity. The Chronicle finds it in another Illinois paper called the Mon ticello Times, edited by a Iffr. Ha.ssett, who, be ing a fool, is of course a Democrat. fie is com menting on the letter ;of the Connecticut gentle men to Mr. Buchanan : We think Silliman has struck no root in the White House. The e(olution of his quasi noto riety ( . 1.0 be sure ho Was honored with a reply— but did be merit it 1'); is to be sought in the ab sence of homogenitY, of the people, and in the preemie(' of discordant elements among the cir cle, which have been systematically taken ad vantage of by "Old Buck," but only temporarily. We think the forty-three worthies should look up before they made such nugatory charges.— Mr. Stillman and his associates fulfil the. scrip tures, that the less a man knows the wider he carries his mouth ; and the wider ho opens his - mouth the larger his ears will grow. It is as impossible loran ignoramus to keep his jaws closed as it is for a sink oyster to keep his, shell shut. So mob for vanity. We do not. advo cate the policy of Buchanan, with regard to the state of affairs in Emmen. This would not do, but one thing is certain, that the troubles of that territory originated from the existing ani madversions of all parties who settled there, each claiming a dominanoy over -the other ; neither do we approve of Silliman's conduct, who must either be aclown or a wise roan. It is lucky that man don't live is Indiana. If he did the Democracy would make him Governor as sure as fate—lndianapolis Journal. is one word, it Ltbe Sub-treasury system]has become almost as much an institution of the country as the Constitution itself, and nothing tel the money and intittenee of Me hanks have pre vented its adoption by the several States for the protection of the funds of the people of the re spective Stales.—Forney' a PhilacistyhM Prem. At one period or-another since the adoption of the Sub.tressury system, nearly every State in the Union has been under democratic control— many of them constantly ao—and yet in not a solitary one has the Sub-treasury system been adopted for State purpsses. Mr. Forney as cribes this to "Me money and influence of the banks." not a solitary State, it appears —if the allegations of the - Press be true,— has the 'democracy been able to withstand "the money of the banks!" Ho is a toilsome merchant, his wife a lirrd-working housekeeper. Once they were poor, now ruinously rich. They have seven daughters, whom they train up in utter idleness. They are all do-nothings. They spend much money, but not in works of humanity, not even in elegant accomplishments, in painting, dan cing, music and the like, so paying in spiritual beauty what they take in material means. They never read nor sing; ‘ they are know-nothings, and only walk in vain show, as useless as a, ghost, and as ignorant as the block on which their bonnets are made. Now, these seven 'la dies,' (as the newspapers call the poor things, as insignificant and helpless,) are not only idle,: earn nothing, but they consume much. What a load of finery is on their shoulders •and,"heads and necks. Mr. Manygirls hires many men and women to wait on his daughters' idleness, and these servants are withdrawn from the produc tive work of the shop or the farm, and set to the unproductive work of nursing these seven great grown-up babies. "On the other side of the way, lion Mr. Manyboys has seven eons, who are the exact match of the merchant's daughters—rich, idle. some of them dissolute—debauchery coming be fore their beard—all useless; earning nothing, spending much and wasting mbre. Their only labor is to kill time, and in summer they emi grate from pond to pond, from lake to lake, hav ing a fishing-line with a worm at one end and a fool at the other. These are the first families in Somewhere. Their idleness is counted plea sure. Six of, these sons will marry, and fire, perhaps, of Mr. Manygirl's daughters, and what families they will found, to live on the toil of their grandfather's bones, until a commercial crisis, or the wear and tear of time has dissipa ted thir fortune, they arc forced, reluctantly, to toil!" Tuo Now St coon COMPTROLLER. - Judge Douglass, acting upon the Scripture maxim, that he who does not take care of his own household is worse than an infidel, has caused his father in-law, Mr. Cutts to he appointed Second Comp - troller. We make uo objection to the appointment, per U. The public interests will not suffer by the change which has been made. and, from the acquaintance we have had with Mr Cutts, we wish him all manner of success in his new posi tion. But it will seem a little singular to ttnsophis ticated Democrats, when they learn that Mr Brodhead is an "Old Line Democrat," and Mr Cutts an "Old Line Whig." WIZ=2 .1 .Trms TO Rear.—There lies in the depths of evory heart, that dream of youth, and the chastened wish of manhood, which neither cares uor honors can extinguish; the hopes of ono day resting from the pursuits which absorb us; of interposing between our old age and the tomb, some tranquil interval of reflection, when with feelings not subdued but softened, with passion not exhausted hut Mellowed, we may look calmly on the past without regret, and the future without tpprehension. But in the tumult of the world, this vision forever, forever recedes :on we approach it; the passions which have ag itated our life, disturb our latest hours; and we go down to the tomb like the sun in the ocean, with no gentle and gradual source which 'gave it rise. NA sullen in its beamless descent, with all its fiery glow, long after it has lost its power and its splendor. SLIIVEWS is OREGON.—A few years ago it would have been considered evidence of insanity for any one to have expressed an opinion that Oregon could become a slave state. But the latest news from the far North-West is,. that the Oregon Constitutional Convention met, ou the 17th August, and that Judge Deady. a pro-slave ry man, was elected President of that body by a decided Majority. The vote on the Presidency of the Convention was considered a test, and the result was a complete triumph of those in favor of making Oregon a slave state. Sometime since this would have been startling, but as Mr. Bu- - chanan recently informed us Chat slavery exists in all the Territories, under 'the constitution, there is no occasion just now for surprise.--Ctn. "STRAIGHTENING rile Bars."—lt is a custom in Berkwickshire, England, among women work ers in the field, when their hacks become much tired by bowing low down while singling turn ips with short shanked boos, to lie down mpon their faces to the ground, allowing others to step across the lower part of their backs, on the lum bar region, with one foot, several times, until all pain of fatigue is removed. Burton, in his •First Footsteps in East Africa," narrates - a very similar custom in females who lead the camels, and who "lie . at full length, prone, stand upon each other's back, trampling and kneading with their toes, and rise like giants refreshed." This custom is called "joge:tin Africa: in England it is "straightening the back.- RICH.—An exchange says the Chicago Ledger —a full blooded Black Republican paper—is out in favor of nominating some negro tor the Presi dency in 1860.
