Why is - gold thus hoarded, if bank notes arerun home for the purpose of making exchange only? The interests of the business comeinnity aro certainly not advanced by keeping a large. amount of,goldlocked up for Gaz., Saturday. The N. V. The nominal rang. is 205 11 cent. The large payments of Saturday are looked forward to with apprehension but melt of the raper due on Mat day has already ban extended. PIIILADBLPRIA, Friday, Oct. 2, 1867.—Mr. M. E. Wendell, the agent of the Middlesex Compa ny, Bay State. Milky and the New York and New England We led Company, has made an assign ment. is. The New tork Tribune of Saturday says: The feeling in the street is decidedly appre hensive to-day. The important failures an flounced here, following upon that of Lawrence, Stone & Co., of Boston, created Nits that we have not yet experienced the worst of the storm. The effect of these failures is to embarrass still more the negotiation of paper, and to alarm capitalists into hoarding their money. The fail ures to-day include the highly important anti wealthy house of P. Chotep, jr., & Co., of this city. This is a fur house, with connections at St. Louis, and is one of the oldest. homes in the country. The "Co." was Mr. J. F. A. Sanford, who died last summer. The4mmetliate 'colic of this suspension ieunderstood to be operations in wool, and the Impossibility of negotiating ex change. The house has made an assignment. to Mr. U. A. Murdoch and the confidential clerk of the house. Of the very large interest in the Il linois Central Railroad held by Chotean & Co., 6,QOU shares have been transferred to Mr. Geo. Peabody of London, and none of it, we under stand, will come upon the market.. The , ilren" house of P. Chotean, jr., Sanford & Co., No. 9 Nassau sired, will not suspend. This house consists of Mr. Choteau, Mr. Sanford and IL A. Murdoch, and its assets •and business have alwitys heed kept entirely distinct from those of the fair concern. Mr. Chotean left this evening for St. Louis. We learn also of the suspension of Messrs. Hutchinson, Tiffany & Co., Domestic Goods; Swift, Hansom & Co., connected with Swifft & Johnson of Chicago, and one or two others; also Powell, Ramsdell & Co., of Now burgh, a highly respectable and wealthy house. The following Banks are thrown out to-day: The Farmers' Bank and Hudson River Bank, at Hudson; Old Saratoga Bank, N. Y., Thompson Bank, Conn.; Phillipsburg Bank, N. J.; Baas River Bank, Mass.; and Stark Bank, Vt. Many of the uncurrent money-dealers have been unwil ling to purchase Eastern currency to-day, and buy Stale only to a moderate extent at Ito 2 per cent. discount. The American Exchange and Metropolitan Banks, however, continue to receive as usual at 140 for Eastern, end per cent. for State, from their dealers and cor respondent Banks, and we arc assured they will continue to receive as long as the Now York banks sustain specie payments. The N. V. Commercial Adcernser of Saturday evening says This has been a dark day in the street—the most gloomy, we think, of a gloomy week, and on every hand we find the same dull, heavy and despondent feeling paramount. The suspension of Messrs. E. W. Clark, Dodge & Co., which was announced at the board this morning, exercised a most depressing effect upon a market already burdened to the full amount of its capacity to sustain, and even those who had previously been hopeful seemed disposed to join the ranks of those who deem that everything is lost. The only spice of consolation to be gleaned was that suggested by the old adage. "It is always dark est just befote the dawn." Prom Philadelphia we have information that the Reading R. R. went to protest on its paper yesterday. The note which they failed to pay, we understand, was, only for ten thousand dol lars. The Company continues payment of the coupons, and there will be no interruption in the business of the road. New 'Vona, Oot.
