Packra AND WtLotoT.—When Mr. Wilmot, the Republican candidate for Governor of Pennsyl vsoia, challenged hie Democratic competitor to traverse the State with him and discuss before the people at joint meetings the issues of the campaign. many persons were inclined to think Gen. Packer acted properly in refusing the test. But however opinion might differ on that point then, I'at lie: • wet=s sines proses his declina tion to have been unworthy of approval. Mr. Wilmot lima publftslied a list of his appoilitteents to address the people all over the State, and is now fulfilling them isi"ueral Packer is busily engaged in following, in exactly the same track, taking care to reach every point just a few days after Wilmot has delivered his speeoh. This looks like a practical acknowledgment that General Packer is afraid to meet - Mr. Wilmot in a free and frank discussion. If ho had acted upon hie own programme, the ease would have been otherwise. if ho spoke 'lye truth when, in his letter, he said that ho and! his party would not continue the agitation of the slavery issues, what advantage could it be to' hint to follow in Mr. Wilmot's wake? The inference from his conduct is that he does want to discuss these issues but without an opponent to confute his reasoning and false assumptions. He stands con fessed by his own course in the present canvass to be unequal to a fair Contest with Mr: Wilmot. —Phil. North Amer. From tho liaditon COOTIZT. DEMOCRACY IN INDIANA—GovERRoR.WRIOEIT'S OPINION OF THE. DESTINT OF HIS PARTY, AND THE CHARACTER OF ITS LEADERS IN INDIAN/L-8110e: ly after Gov. Wright received his appointment of, Minister to Berlin, and before he had for mally accepted it, while travelingupon one of the railroads of our State, he fell in company with a venerable , minister of his acquaintance, who had been present wlien he made his anti-batik speech, a short time before, in Indianapolis. The conversation very naturally turned upon the subject of his recent speech, and the hostility of the Bright faction to the Governor, when the Reverend friend remarked:_ “Governor, they will try to buy you off,•' and if a small office will not effect the object,. they will offer a larger one, and I am not certain but what they have now made the bid that will take you. But should you refuse the offer, and fight the battle through, you may certainly make yourself the strongest man of your party in the State.” To which the Governor replied: "Father ll—, I am in difficulty, and l)ardly know what to do; I am poor; I am unwilling to return to the practice of law after baring been 80 long out of it. I have no other resource but to return to my little farm in Park county, and this I don't wish to do. As tor making myself the strongest man of my party in this State, I am convinced that the party with which I have been acting in this State. must go down. The people will never sustain a party led by a set of as corrupt men as are now at the head of the Democratic party in Indiana." Father ll remarked: "Yes, Governor, and the most corrupt man among them pat helped to place in the Gover nor's seat." •.l know I did," the Gov. replied, "but if God will forgive me I will never do so again." Let all good men pray that this great sin may he forgiven. NTGB.p.SCIFRAGE LA LOCUSIA:tift.—It is charged, anti proved by the affidavits of a number of the most respectable citizens, that the Democratic party has encouraged the free negroes in Rapids Pariah, La., in voting, and that at the election last November, Col. R. A. Hunter, the Democratic canffidate for State treasurer, led to the polls a band of free negroes with arms in their hands to enforce if necessary,- their right to vote. They are in the habit of ;voting in the above-named Pariah. As they invariably vote the Democrat ic ticket, we suppoSe the t;nquirer will regard thin amalgamation with the same complacency as it looked upon the "abolitionism" of Gov. Chase, as long as he acted with the Democratic party, and was its special favorite. NIORP. Mr. Dwight, although not known as a large donor to the in stitutions and societies in his immediate neigh borhood, gave largely to the Missionary and Bible Societies of the Presbyterian (lima.— He was supposed to be worth about hail a mil lion of dollars. IV I SCON IN.—The Wisconsin Constitution pro hibits "any person holding any office of trust or profit under tine United Slates" from being di gible to any State 'office. The Democrats.. re gardless of this provision, have nominated Joel C. Squires for Bank Compteuller. who lately re ceirml the appointment of Register of the U. S. Land Office at Mineral Point. A Controversy has arisen about it, and Mr. Squires is in an un plebennt dilemma. If he keeps the Federal of ties he cannot run for the State one, and per Con tra, if be resigns the snug berth he has, he stands a very _slim chance of getting into any other.
