When viewing the al nate 'encroach ntents of the slave power on l b free States, un der the auspices of the past an preseritnational executives, we can hardly re sin the thought that ho was inspired with that Spirit of prophecy "that touched Isaiah's hallowed lips with fire," when he broughtin that noble "Proviso" which has ever' since endeared him to the heart of every freeman, not only in Pennsylvania but the world. Dario.. *Sr.', v... Lib. turLklpi al Insurance - 0.75 ruurib sl, But who should support and erect this inflex ible patriot ? We answer every man interested in t fie welfare of posterity. Shall the slave hotdi•rsrthat already possess a large -majority of the best sections of the "Union" use every means, fair and foul, to get an Almost boundless territory for his three million of staves, and shall twenty million of freemen, forgetting the claim, of their offspring, succumb and crouch to this despicable minority : aided by their still more contemptible auxiliaries, the northern dough-beads, that. invariably support their cause. It is well known to every person that will but open his eyes to see that that old weathercock-, James Buchanan, has utterly fail ed in currying out those principles of freedom for Kansas, his friends before the dection pledg ed themselves would be his policy. It Is time, high lime, the citizens of Pennsyl vania should (iu the language of Goldsmith,) -"pause and ponder and ponder and pause," and contemplate their own best interests and that of their posterity ; too long they have "lain among 'the pots" of bogus democracy, whose often 'plighted faith has been but reiterated hypoc racy, calculated only to deceive the simple and unwary. Have they ever carried out a measure for the public good FROWNED before an election? In lb . ° person of Judge - Wilmot the people of 'Pennsylvania will find a man that- ill redeem the State as far as human exertion is capable Ile will bring her to be recognizdd as a State of freemen from those "long desolations" that has clothed her in ashes. From the control of men who consider it a sufficient apology for (heir crimes to tell us they - are "democrats!" the tie) or imaginary democrats of Penn sylvania' support a candidate for Governor at. tactic& to the administration of a menthol would if be could plant slavery in Kansas at the point of the bayonet? It is said the tender mercies of the wicked are mingled with cruelty; and "bleed lug Kansas" under the past and what is come of the present national administration has become "household words." The present administra tion is the seCond edition of the past,-but "ten cent Jimmy" has improven in_everything but one on his ..illnstrious .predecessor." In the distribution of tie "spoils" our northern dough faced heroes that sacrificed their honor and, con science for his elevation have been in a great measure forgotten! on the election of David WihnSt depends the political salvation of the Stale. Citizens of Pennsylvania, permit an obscure individual that has long shared your joys and sorrow! to en quire will you any longer permit this "ball and chain" democracy to ride-over you? You re vere the memory of our revolutionary patriots; revere their principles 'by making them your own. They left you an inheritance of freedom, shall you bequeath to your children the yoke of slavery? Shall you support Tor Governor amen that endorses the administration of James Bu chanan and Franklin Pierce; that would give to such a murderer and ruffian as General Walker the right hand of friendship and fellowship— that would take yotir • children's bread and cast it to the dogs? We may - well adopt the language of the Psalmist, "The wicked walk on every Bide when vile men are exalted." AN OLD Ltxx Wow OP BUTLER C 0.., PA. ADULTERATED BEVERAGES. —Drugged and adulterated liquors are preducing their natural I consequences in the increase and fatality of 1 diseases resulting from intemperance. Thirty. tire years ago delirium tremens was a disease almost entirely unknown in this • country, al though wine and spirituous liquors were t.ien to be found on the table and sideboard of nearly r e! every decent , d comfortable house in the land.„ This terrible alady Is not only becoming more frequent, bat. i is yearly assuming, as hospital Physicians ha e shown by statistics, a far more Incurable form. Indeed it has been suggested that delirium tremens is nothing more nor less than a epecitio disease caused by the habitual introduction ofspecifto poison into the system, and that this poison Is inothing but a drug, or drugs, surreptitiously introduced into nearly every variety of intokicating liquom—N. ME= ••, • 111 g . . , i 4 TERMS i or numpoirt). of PIITLADILPIIIL •• • • W. W. SCARBOROUGH, Esq., of the Trust Co. Investigating Committee, returned from New York on Saturday evening. The books andpa pers of the New York Agency were found in a most confused condition, with rttachniente rest ing thick and heary, and collateral is s , fromues ex tending almosteery acCount. 11. Wits dif ficult, therefore, to enter upon the work of in vestigation; and more difficult still to carry it on. As yet the committee are not in a condition to make a formal report. The bottom has not been reached, and the committee have, very properly, concluded that they will make no report until they can present it in a full and reliable shape. This much, however, has been ascertained, and may be relied upon. The capital dock of the Company, tutu million dollars, hos teen sunk. It is the opinion of the committee that the Compa ny will be able to pay its debts in full, but this will depend, in some measure, on the result of 1 investigations yet to be made. Large sums were borrowed by Ludlow at 7 per cent., of pri vate bankers and capitalists, which he reported to the Directors as deposits at 3®.1 per cent.— The parties who loaned this money to Ludlow supposed it was being used al. the West at 10® 1,2-per cent., and therefore did not suspect there, was anything wrung. Collection paper was de posited as collateral security for money thus ob tained, and of this, the New York Directors any they had no knowledge. At the time-the Bank suspended, all its collection paper was hypothe cated. This is an indication of the manner in which its business was transacted. Now, the question is, where' did this money go to? To this, no answer has as 1' et been obtained. It does not appear that the 'funds were stolen, out right. It is not probable they wore. The only reasonable hypothesis is that Ludlow speculated largely in stocks, and thus lost the money. It is known that he purchased four hundred thou., sand dollars of the stock of the Trust Company at a high price. It is also known that he took the last batch of bonds !seized by the State of Ohio. By these two operations he sunk over half a million dollars. 'We imagine, it will be found that the bank has been rotten for some time, notwithstanding the satisfactory exhibits sent for the inspection of the Directors iu this city: and that it has been ruined by stock spec ulations and injudicious loans made to lame duck merchant,, and crippled railroad companies, for all of which Mr. Ludlow may or may not be alone responsible. The "hole thing looks so bad, and exhibits so strongly the depravity of human nature, that it is unpleasant to think, talk or write about it. Frost C Bradley, lumber dealers, and Higgin botham S: White, dry goods dealers, Chicago, failed on Thursday.—Cin. Gaz. Tot effect of the money pressure is beginning to be felt upon industrial employments.- Some factories working qnly half time, and some trades nearly suspended in their usual opera lions, cause an unusual depression of labor. Appeals for employment begin to be more-than commonly pressing, and should the present dif ficulty continue long, considerable suffering will follow. In New York the number of unemployed persons is growing daily larger, u and many per sons are daily trooping in from the comitry in search of places as teachers, journeymen, clerks, seamstresses, musicians, &e. The New York Tribune says "Hardly, since 1837, bas so gloomy a prospect for tinter lowered upon the laboring classes." Of course, n considerable contraction in the circulation, which measures the value of labor, will unsettle prices, and as long as the cause continues, the effect will each day be felt more severely. Weds not apprehend, however, that the present difficulty will last so long or bo prod - fictive of the same'disrtslers so in 1837. Some two weeks ago on.the heel of the lint failures, and in the midst of the severe contrac tion in this city, some Canadians slipped over to Chicago and bought n Million Dollars' worth of Grain fdr about three-quarters of a Million. They have in Canada ababit of buying Illinois Sprint Wheat for home use, and Belling their own Winter Wheat to Europe oa this city for some twenty-five to thirty-three per cent, more, saving. handsomely by the trade. Raving cour age and money just when they were abort on this side of the Lakes, they turned these quali ties to good account, as was right.—.Y. i. TrIB. Financial Items The President of the Bank of the State of Indiana had telegraphed that the institution wits not suffering from loss by its Eastern connec tions, and that it is able "not only to meet promptly its own engagements, but extended facilities to its customersto enable them to some extent to aend forward the surplus products of the State." BOSTON, Sept. 21.—The money market has opened tight this week, and even the best paper is hard to get shaved. .The banks are said to have refused to-day to receive New York checks on deposit. A report has been circulated that the Dry Goods house of C. H. Mills i Co. was about to resume, but it isnot correct. A letter from the President of the State Bank of Ohio says the Banks have arranged with the Ohio Trust Company by taking bonds . ..m(l mort gages for their balances, about $BOO,OOO. This locks up that amount, but is not equal to their undivided profits. There are 36 branches, with U,100,000 capital, $1,000,000 undivided profits, aid $10,000,0(0 bills receivable. "Thelanks," the President remarks, “are in a more comfort able situation than when the Trust Company's. failure occurred, the loans are on active com mercial paper, based chiefly on the export. trade of the State, with no railroad acceptances or bonds, or stocks." This has been one of the bluest days in feel ing that we have noticed in Wall street since the present depression commenced. " The rumors of heavy failures in Boston, Philadelphia and Al bany, some of which rumors unfortunately were true, bad a depressing effect, and there appeared to be an apprehension that some new financial disaster was impending over the marliet.---N. Trib., Tueaday. ME99118. Crabs W. FIELD & CO., paper deal ers of this city, have suspended.payment until the return of the head of the house from Eu rope, who will arrive next ireek in the Arabia. We hear also of two other city houses, but not or much importance. At Philadelphia there have been several. large failures. Messrs. J. Farnham & Co., Hacker, Lea & Co., Newhouse & Spats. Th. B. Remington & Co., and Deal, Milligan tk Co., all leading houses. There are current rumors of very important suspensions in Boston and Albany, but there appeared to be no good foundation for them.—/V. y. nib. ROSEWOOD OASES. .1. Ft. MD CO, Jewellen, OS not rt.
