Day has broke. We now see our way ... through.
The money pressure which has been operating
embarrassingly upon the businesa community
for several weeks is about to he relieved. By
next Monday evening there will have arrived in
this city, from New Orleans, between $600,000
and $600,000 of coin. The steamer Woodruff

the result is looked for witbaome anxiety. The

WASUINOTON, Sept. 20.—A dispatch from
Norfolk, received by the Peters: urg Express,

others have been saved. as they saw several lights

There are also strong hopes of the safety of
Capt. Herndon, who was on the wheel-house
when the Central America went down, and was
last seen clinging to a plank,•and struggling
manfully for his life.

STEAMSHIP DISASTEE4,—The appaling loss of
life on the Central America has 110 parallel in
the annals of American steamship navigation.
The nearest approach is the disaster Whiell betel
the steamship Arctic, on the 27th of September,
1854, by which sometiling like three hundred
and filly lives were lost.. The steamship Sea
Francisco, belonging to the Pacific Mail sSteam
hip Company. which foundered in the Atlantic
on the 2fish or December, 1853, was lost under
circumstances similar in many respects to the
disaster which has, just occurred; but the nuts
her of lives sacrificed was much lass, not varying
far from tit% hundred, including 16U ruiteu
States troops.
LIERT. Wm. L. If cantos, U. B. N.. LATE Con-
SLANDER OF THE CENTRAL AHERIVA.—TtIe nets'
valuable life lout by the recent disaster iv that
of Lieut. William Lewis Herndon, U. S. N., late
commander of the ill starred Central America.
We are not using the language of empty adul
ation—we have Lieut. llerndon's past life be
fore ua, and the further fact that fifty-nine moment
and children, all such on board, were saved in n
boat, proves conclusively that Ile did his duty
right manfully, and, to the last. had central
over himself as well as over his crew. We do
not permit nurselves to hope that the gallant
commander has been saved; it were imponsdtle,
except by some miraculous tot erposii ion of Prov
idence as that which rescued Cal.t. Luce, att. r
he sunk with the Aretitt's wreck.
Capt. William Lewis Herndon was a native of
Fredericksburg. Va., and was the son of Dabney
Herndon, Esq., a highly respected cirreeu el
that place. Ile was hero October 25th. ISI2.
and was, therefore, at the time of but death .1..
years of age, 2fl of which he had spent in the
service of his country. Ile entered the navy en
a midshipman at the age of fitteep.
About two years ago he was Ininsferred from
the U. 5. frigate Potomac to the couttuand of
the "George Law." These California steamers,
carrying Coifed States Ma Is. are required
law to be under the cotuttiand of officers of the
navy, and Lieut. Herndon was chosen fur the re
sponsible post. The name of the George Law
was, only a few weeks ago, changed to tha Ld
.he Central America, the loss of which is now
mourned by thousands of hearts.
He rendered't he country gallant services: in
the Florida war, off the count and in the twines
et Florida. an I suffered- severely in hie health
from the pestilentinl miasma et that service.—
Ile was under Commodore Perry during the Mex
ican war, atui t off Vera Cruz during the granter
on ri of the wAr, where, as an officer. for no iv y,
energy, and fearlessness. he was among the very
first. The governments of Mr. - Polk to. highly
appreciated ids services thn•, in looking about
for a gallant, efficient and hardy man to explore
the A tnszon, they selected hint for the danger
ous service. He entered South America by the
way of Peru, and. crossing the Andes, came to
the sources and branches of the Amazon, and
to his barque drifted or rowed down its immense
length to Para. in B, uzil, to the delight and
amazement of his friends, who, from his long
stay upon the upper waters, had almost give.
him up for lost. His admirable and instructive
report to the government of this exploration
known to every hotly in this couutry. and it has
been rend and reread with like delight itt
parts of the world.
Congress cheerfully awrrderl him a gratuity
of some e'ght or ten thousand dollars for his
courage, perseverence and heroism amid all his
triele and difficulties. The loss of ouch .a man
is to he deplored, not only by his friends, hr,
by his whole country. As a naval officer he
never shirked nor avoided n duty, bat aleays
courted dingere in war, in climate rind on land.
