The pressure among the New England manu facturers and merchants is great, and they have thus far, nobly stood up through many trying circumstances. New Vont:, Sept. 16th.—Masers. Nlurray Davis, large wool teorchants, are reported failed to-day. In addition to the suspension Of' the bank of the Capitol at Indianapolis noticedlesterday, we hate also to. report the suspension of the Central Bank. / Both institutions were winding op, and hnre n very small outstanding' circula tion, and this Is secured by Stata, stocks. Three banks hare Leenreditsd to day. The Metropolitan has thrown out th?"-itlonson River and Sandford hanks of Maine, and the Commercial Bank of Columbia, S. C., one of the old Looks. is thrown out at Charleston. A large umber of bank officers from the interior are in town negotiating fur means to carry them thro' the crisis, and it is understood the Suffolk sys tem is seeking fig a niiiMlp of dollars in gold to assist in bridging overWrPresent riatropondine New tingland banks. These banks, and espe cially those of Rhode Island, have been eaten eively engaged in lending their circulation to railroads and others !or use at the West. The great scarcity of Exchange at the West is now forcing this circulation home very fast, while the securities held by the banks are not avail able. Tile CIII'SZ or TUE OUTIIREIIIC IN INDIL.--TllO English papers are just beginning to realize the feet that it is not religion but a desire to restore the Mohammedan empire that has caused the outbreak in India. Intelligent Englishmen in India have noticed this feeling among the Mo. hsmmedans for years, and it is said-it was the practice to have daily' prayer offered in the mosques for the re-establlehtnent of the King of Dclhi. The revolution Is not a mutiny in the army alone . ; but a revolution of the whole Mo hammedan population in India. The govern ment felt so secure that it only laughed at these intimations; and it was not till the army seized on the pretext of the greased chrtridges to mu tiny that it began to realize the extent of the danger. The rapid spread of the mutiny shows that it was a work of concert. A. German paper, in a letter from Calcutta, says the revolution was to begin in Calcutta and not Delhi. The plan was to murder all Europeansand Chrstians, and to restore the ancient Mohammedan empire. All ❑te plans were seen laid, and the object must have been attained,. If it had not been for the precipitancy of one of the native regiments, which commenced the outbreak too soon. LAST Foss, Loose.—When a lady (we are talking of a lady in the full height and breadth of fashion,)As got her bonnet and gloves on, and is perfectly rcady with her parasol in hand, she always goes back to the looking-glass to lake a lust fond look. Upon our asking "a dear, handsome duchess," if this was not the truth, Oho had the charming candor to state: "Yes, my dear Punch, it is the truth, but not all the truth. No woman, take my word for it, is Bads Pied with one look. At least, I know that /am not, for (and here our duchess laughed, as though she was pleased with herself and all the world,) I don't Mind telling you, invariably lake/our—Aar good ones. The first look in tho glass is for myself, that's fair; the senond is for my husband, that's nothing but just. the third is for my friends, that's only generous; and, the last is for my rivals, that's human nature. If the butt look satisfies me, then I know it is all right, and, I assure you, I never take any more!"-Ponch. CLIERCR AND STATE-A COLLISION IN Ans. raat , —TheArchbishop of Milan lately met- so goes thostory—the Empress of Austria on the staircase of the Duomo, and the robes of the former got so caught by the hoops and crinoline of;:tke latter, that a tearing of garments be= came necessary to effect a separation. This is not the first instance of a collision between Church and State, nor the first instance where the parting of them has damaged both parties. Lo regard to the present entanglement, it is said the diversion of ••the young and august vietint was immense." How conld it be otherwise than immense, considering the extent of the circum ference that must have been shaken by the royal eaechination Peat LIGHT READING.—A. Dublin paper, in describing a human body lately discovered loan extraordinary state of preservation in a put bog near Mellinger, Bays that "it• appeared to be that of a strong muscular man, and exhibited no perceptible marks of violence, except that the head was nevered from the neck just on a • title with the root of the tongue." The excep tion seems rather an important one. Our Hi bernian cotemporary apparently makes light of .a somewhat serious meditation in virtually sta ting that the deceased person had only had his head cut off.—Funch. • • Tuk CuMeee SIIGAR CANE.—IL is said that Company has been formed in Northfolk. Ct., to manufacture castings for sugar cane mills. There brestimated to be 400,000 acres planted with the Chinese cane this year. °Commas the moat of it implanted merely for curiosity, and, for want of proper means for grinding and knowledge of extracting the fulee,-a great nutu. her of failures will be reported. But a' single successful demonstration=; that the cane will produce sugar enough to be a profitable. crop, Wlllset offagahistall the failures resulting from ignorance as to its cultivation. SUICIDE AT NIICIARA FALLS.—The following despatch was pubiished in the papers of Sat urday:— "NIAGARA FALLS, Sept. 11. 1857. "A man who registered his name at IV. T. Allen, from Now England, threw himself from the Table Rock this afternoon." The facts in the case, as the Buffalo Courier learns them front a gentleman who came from the Falls on Saturday, are as follows:—The man came from Montreal, and while crossing 'the Suspension Bridge inquired of the driver if any one had ever been known to go ov..r the Falls and live. The Jehu replied that no case had come' within his knowledge, and that the probabilities were very strongly opposed to the occurrego of such an event. The passenger as sured thlt driver that he should accomplish 11. e ; feat. . Arriving at the Clifton House the man regis tered his name, called for a room and a bottle of champagne, add after imbibing the wine ad dressed a letter—a, mere scrawl—to his sister, and another to a firm in Montreal. He then went to Table Rock, walked into the water near the edge of the p.recipice, threw his hat over, and immediately made a similar disposition of himself. Of course the body of the infatuated man has not been recovered. The Montreal firm to which the letter was ad dressed was immediately telegraphed, anal the reply was that one of the members would come immediately to the Falls. At present nothing further is known of this remarkable proceeding. Tor storm which raged along the Southern coast on Saturday, Sunday and Monday last, was more serious in its effects than was ut first supposed; some ten or a dozen vessels are al ready reported ashore, upon the coasts of North Carolina and Virginia, and several steamers have bean crippled and compelled to put into the nearest port in distress.. The steamer Nor folk sunk in the Chesapeake, the Propellor Caledonia was run down and . disabled, the Jamestown was bloWn out to sea, as far south as Hatteras, and shipped a great deal of water, doing considerable damage to her cargo, the Southerner reaohed Charlestown almost a com plete wreck, with six feet of water in her hold, • the Empire City put into Norfolk in distress, having exhausted her coal, and the new steamer Columbia arrived at -Charleston on .11onday, having had both her wheel-houses carried away by the force of the sea which broke over her during the gale; and last, though not least, the California steamer Central America, with sever al hundred passengers, and a million of dollars in treasure, which left Havanna on theBth inst., in company with the Empire City, has not yet arrived at this port, and nothing has been heard from her.—N. 1 Timm. Tea Wits= biztvian.—The Wilmot meeting in thin place on Tuesday; was a pleasant and profitable event to the cause. The assemblage of the people was, considering the time, unex pectedly large—demonstrating the interest taken in the questions at issue. We should take plea sure in giving the interesting proceedings of the day in detail, but our space this week forbids. Between three and four o'clock in 0'; afternoon, Judge Wilmot was escorted into town by Haw kins' fine brass band, and quite a procession of horsemen and vehicles filled with his friends.— As soon as convenient after his arrival the con course proceeded to Mr. Robert' H. Peeblp'e Grove, adjoining the borough, where the meet ing was organized. Mr. Wilmot was introduced to the assembly by a few appropriate remarks on the part of the President. His speech had a most happy in fluence—strengthening the confirmed—warming up the cool—and infusing a spirit of interest in the breasts of those who were previously indif ferent. Could the Judge have the privilege of addressing toe peOple throughout the State, as he addressed them in New Castle, his election would be rendered one of the certain events.— New Castle adz. Tux Elections in Vermont and Main show a falling off in the general vote, and of course a reduction of the heavy Republican majorities of last year. There is no gain to the other side, but a simple neglect to vote this season by sonic thousands whom the Presidential contest, the *Kansas outrages, and the ruffianly beating of Senator Sumner, called to the polls last year. Nobody could have expected that the side which receives the suffrages of a great majority .of those who are not inveterate partisans would receive so large majorities this year go last ; but theeturns show that the Republican column in thohe States stands firm and unbroken, even by the insidious approaches of (Jewel Apathy.- 2V: A BLoOstimarom (III.) paper rays—" Wheat de clined to fifty cents per bushel in this market Thursday. Corms CnoP.—The New York Shipping List has prepared its annual statement of the cotton crop. It appears that the total receipts at the shipping ports for the year ending, August 31st, were 1.,939,519 bales, showing a decrease of 688,326 bales eh compared with the crop of last year. The total exports from tho United States to foreign ports during the year ending, Aug. 81st, were 2,262,667. Jowl Moran, the Irish patriot, said some time ago, that, if he were a fool he would be happy; and, as if acting upon that conviction, he has been making one of himself ever since. And, to tell the truth, it has not been with him a pursuit of happiness under difficulties. SOROHO SUOAR.--One of the finest samples of sugar we have seen, says the Austin (Texas) Gazette, is a sample made from- the Sorglto cane, by Mr. Studor, near Austin. It is of a fine grain and color, and would command the high est price in New Orleans. We have also seen a sample of his syrup made from Sorgho,' which is a very superior article. A great many persons have also disappeared, who are supposed to have been murdered. Thirty of the number killed were 'foreigners killed by foreigners.
