On Wednesday, the 3J inst,, at a-ball given by the citizens of,Lecompten. ChMll Bailey, n free State citizen, of the town, was mortally wounded by 'ANIL Brockett, of that place. Brockett is known as one of the ru,st ultra pro-slavery men in the territory, end seesamire lp euxagedduring the difficulties. •At the battle of Black Jack he was H. Clay Pate's second in command. On the night in question he woe -much intoxicated, and swore he would have the life of a free State Man .before morning. Mr. Bailey, wh with his brother. is in business at L.ecomptoa, was pre,ut, at the ball, and during the evenirg left the hall, for the purpose of as sisting an acquaintance home. There can be tie doubt that if Lane had persisted in staying that he would 'have been assaulted and probably murdered. The writer adds: • • • You have no - ides of the awful weather and of our sufferings from the' heat; we sit with wet cloths over our beads, but the deaths from sun stroke continue large; that 'dreadful scourge cholera -has also broken out, and we have lost already seventy lighting men. _lie buried twen ty-throe a few nights ago at . one funeral, and the shrieks of the dying were something awful; two poor ladles who were living over at the hos pital died, I believe, from fright. IfraNIIMI IN MINNESOTA.—The Democrats, who have control of the territorial treasury of Minnesota, have so managed matters as to prevent the Republican branch of the late Constitutional Convention from being pild eith er its esex penses or thaper diem of its- members, though in the conference committee of the two' conventions it was agreedthitt both conventions should be paid alike, and several of the best men in the Democratic convention protested ogainat the measure. • , , Lunation; Pa., has not until! very lately hod the adventago areaway (scabies. O.—The frost on Monday night, it is_now said, seriously injured the to bacco crop in Connecticut, and the lose must be considerable. A large amount, however, has been safely housed. The Hartford Times says that:More tobacco has been grown this year in Connection than otter before. A telegraph dispatch to-day announces the suspension of Messrs. Fitzhugh and Littlejohn, proprietors of the Old Oswego . Transportation Company—otte of the largest establishments in that line in the State. Mr. Fitzhugh is at pro- / pres ent one of the Canal Commissioners, and Mr. Littlejohn was speaker of the Assembly a t its late scision.—N. Y. Tea. The faihire of 'Reeves, Abbott 8 Co., and Reeves, Buck to:, extensive manufacturers of Iron at, Ithcenitwille and that vicinity, in this State, (hough involving liabilities to the amount of $BOO,OOO, is not likely to prove as disastrous as was nt first supposed. Of the $BOO,OOO I named, $300,000 is represented to be sectored by good and sufficient collateral securities, hav ing only halt' a million to be provided for. from- the large assets uf the Gyms. It is the expectn tion that the works will go on, and that the two thousand persons employed by them:will be con ' United in their places. As an evidence of the magnitude of the business of these manufactu rers, we are told that their payments for a Call siderable time have been $lO,OOO per day, and to show how strenuously they exerted themselves to meet their engagements, they, a week or two ago entered the market, and raised $lOO,OOO, at 2Qt.2g per cent. a month, to meet the demands of their opeiatives, who had become somewhat Importunate, by a rumor put in circulation that the firms were in a failing condition. The lia bilities to workmen are now only for ten or twelve days' labor, whereas the payments usually are thirty days behind. Within the last year the firms have paid over $BO,OOO in interest, and the day before suspensioit three per cent. month was offered, without being able to pro mire the requisite amounts. Beyond this- offer it was felt to be unjust to their creditors to go. It was giving the property, justly liable to tile claims of their creditors, to the money-lenders. The immediate cause of the suspension, we be lieve, resulted from non complinuce of engage ments on the part of the New York and Erie Railroad Company. The announcement of the suspension of the firms created considerable ex- ex citement yesterday, though we Ire informed' verynittle of .their liabilities is to the phis banks. Some of the country banks hold more than they care to have just now, though not enough probably to put them to any mate rial inconvenience. • E=B t.' _I • Notwithstanding further mercantile disaaturs reported, the general feeling continues to he more quiet and hopeful for the future. LI - Neff LAW AT LEAVENWOUTIL —.lust as the steamer Ont.iha was leaving Leavenworth, Kan sas, on Thursday last, on her trip to St. Louis, preparations were being made by the people. for the immediate mention of two men, named Gordon and Gillepie, for the murder, for the sake of robbery, of a man named Wall,, who had been stopping at the Planing' Hotel, in that city. Wall had been waylailk stabbed, and robbed, the evening previous, and his Motif thrown into the river. • Gordon, being suspected, was caught, a'rope placed around his neck, and he wits hoisted a bort distance from ille ground, when he madea confession implicating•Gillesple, who I. said to be a gray headed old villiart; well known at St. Louis, and one O'Brien, They laid in wait Po their victim, and, according to Cordon's confes sion, ho inflicted the first stab in his sidel'which was followed by four from Gillespie and two from O'Brien. They then' dragged the Lady to the river,-rifled the pockets, and threw BP into the water. The two murderers were to be hung within an hour after the Omaha left Leaven worth, efforts being made in the meantime to find O'Brien, so that all three might swing from the same tree. KARSIII.—A letter from Kiolcapoo to the Charlestown Courier says, thar*xcludiug ull doublibl men, forty-one out of sixty members of the Constitutional Convention of Kansas will vote against submitting the constitution when framed to a 'popular vote. This is explicit, and tut the author to a, Southern man, apparently known to theeditors of the,Courier, we presume his etatemente.mny be relied on. Another circumstance, mentioned inn letter from Kan sas.to the St, Louie Democrat, is confirmatory of the truth of the above. The writer says that a Virginian who was sick in a hospital in Leaven worth, Informed a Free State mah-that ho had. been a probatejudge tinder the territorial laws al Osawkee, and, a candidate for member of the ConstitutionatConvention; but having remarked .inprivato conversation that he was in favor of, submitting the Constitution When framed to a popular vote, he was declared - a traitor, and forced to leave at once. • THE SUOMI PROSPECT. —A letter from the Pa rish Plaqueminel, Louisiana, in the Now Orleans Picayune, sayi that the solar platiters of that State will have no cause to complain of this year's crop.
