On Thursday the commencement exercises proper took place in the old Centro Church.— The graduating class numbered 104, of these 33 were from the States of New York and Con necticut, and 111 from free States, against-11 from slave States. Then followed the conferring of degrees. The degree of A. D., 104; A. M., 54; 315 D., 13; LL. The College buildings are located on the up per part on what is called the public green, con sisting of eight or nine separate edifices. Persons who have read of the noted institutions of learning in England, such as Cambridge—will be impressed with the similarity—to some extent at least, of Yale and Harvard Colleges. In one portion of the green (a street divides it into two parts) the State House Is located and several fine ohurc.hes.' We saw soda churches on different streets, of great architectural beau ty. Congregationalism is predominant as a de nomination. • Late in the afternoon we left for Hartford, an honr and a quarter's ride in the care, on the New Haven, Hartford and Springfield Railway, where we spent three hours in a pleasant wan nee in seeing:the beautiful sights, which grace this place, made famous in history, becsush of the "Hartford Convention," "Charter Oak," etc. Asyut, 1857 • Wax.. Special qrretryondvleo of IllisourMemocrut . Piton KiSsA9.—The villainous system of legal persecutions—or rather persecutions under the forms of law—has not been abandoned. Walker has renewed them. Arrests' are being made in every direction. Lawrence alone is exempt. Troops are encamped near Lawrence. Their force is daily augmenting. On Tuesday another company of dragoons was added to the "army of occupation." There is some object in these movements. Some say that the tax is to be col lected here. Pro-slavery leaders have said so. Walker, in imitation of ilusifanan, is non-com mittal. • These arrests are made on old charges—the vast majority of which were spurious or manu factured. There was no necessity for reviving them, except to please the southern democracy. Kanstis has to suffer that Georgia may be ap peased. Not satisfie* with disfranchising nineteen counties, the foreign element, and this year's emigration, the ruffians have summoned upwards of two hundred free state men to appear at Le compton for trial on the day of election. This is intended to prevent them from voting. Want next? 3 )0 . 4 On on 7 t 0 ou 00 _.12 _l2 00 x 00 ACQUITTAL or Gov. Itontxsox.—Laterencr, Friday morning, Aug. 2.1.—G0v. Robinson was acquittedyesterday forenoon. The jury were out nine hours. There was an animated debate in thejury room. At first, I learn, they stood ten for a verdict of guilty to two for an acquit tal. Tifry were all pro slavery men. The Jddge hod distinctly charged them that, if they bond that the prisoner, at any time, hail assumed to be Governor of the Slate of Khnsas, ilisy must find him guilty-. The defense had alwrilys admitted this fact. The tWo jurors, however, did not accept such instructions. They refused to believe in the existence of a State in this part of the country. They came out, after they had dicussed the ' question home time, and asked that the case be re-openes4 for further evidence on that point! This very verdant request, of course, was re fused. . , At nine o'clock, therefore; they returned verdict of not guilty. It was well 'fur their health and necks that they did so. Tut case of John Thompson, who is sued by the Metropolitan flank on a writ of replevin, is rather a bad one. The affidavit of the Vice President of the Bank, Henry L. Jacque*, nar rates the circumstances thus. Thompson is the redeeming agent in New York of various coun try banks. The Metropolitan Bank is an insti tution establikhed to collect the notes of such distant hanks to have them redeemed. It has been the regular habit of Thompson's clerk to call at the hank in the morning, ascertain the amount of notes therefor redemption, take them, and give in lieu thereof a cheek for the whole amount. On the 25th, the bank had hills to the amount of $12,500, in the following sums Notes of the Chemung County Bank, $1,700 ; WAverley Bank, 52,7110; Bank of Kent, $4,100; Mercantile Bank of Hartford, Conn., $4,400. For these institu tions Thompson was redeeming agent. The hills were all done up in separate packages. Thompson's clerk applied as usual for the bills to he redeemed, took them, and gave a check of Thompson's on the American Exchange Batik, for $12,200; but as he was at that time insolv ent, and the failure immediately became public, the payment of the check was refused. Thomp son had no money in the American Exchange Bank. Ile was immediately asked to.pny the check return the notes, and refused to do either. Such is the stateinent of Mr. Jacques.—Phi/.._C. Paoli the officers of the steamer Ohio, So. 2, we learn that during her last upward trip on Friday the2lst, when twelve miles below Galli polio, site encountered a heavy storm, attended with an exceedingly high wind, amounting to a tornado, and the most terrible thunder and lightning. For a few minutes it seemed as if, nothing could withstand the ranging tempest; large Direst trees were prostrated like reeds, and a number of barns and out-houses were blown from their places by the sheer force of tile wind A man driving a hay-wagon, named Witt. T. Harrison, was struck by lightning and in stantly killed, as were four horses at the same time. A farmer named Wilson, was also injured and stunned by the fluid, but not fatally, and fourteen sheep were destroyed. The violence of the storm expended itself in less than half an hour, but there must have been nine', damage done in the vicinity, if not elsewhere, in that . brief period.—Cro. Gar. Wouns's Itiours IN KANSAL—The careless ness of the Kansas legislators in the phraseology their lairs, has been productive of one result. They have enfranchised the women of KIIIINUN. The section which confers the right of suffrage on women,—reads thus: —Every bona Gdo inhabitant of the territory of Kansas, being a citizen of the United Staten, over the age of twenty-one years, and who shall have resided six months in the territory before the next general election for members of coun cil and House of Representatives, and no other person whatever, shall be entitled to vote at any general election hereafter, to be held in the Ter ritory:" KILIKENNY.—The llorsehead (Chemung co., S. The snake seized upon one of the frog's hind legs, and the frog, to be on a par with his snakeship, caught him by the tail, and both commenced swallowing one another, and continued this carniverotm operation until noth ing was left of either of them."
