Committee , and 'at the head of the "dark lantern" operations of that year, his ob jection to Phillips' democracy strikes us as to very sublime piece of impudence. The ticket noto'..ated seems "all of a piece" with the Convention itself,' It is composed of very ordinary men, and but one or two of them have. anything to recommend them. The As sembly Garet is very weak, but is probably as good as the convention could make, out of the material presented. Nearly the entire ticket is locatedsin and about. the city, the country being ignored. Two of the Assembly are from the city and two from Birmingham; while the _can didates for Judge, Recorder. Register and Clerk• are all front the city and neighborhood. With the exception of Commissioner and Treasurer . theeßy may he said to have the whole ticket. Mr. Owens. one of (he nominees for Assem bly, we have never ,heard of before, and do not expect to hear of again. Mr. Salisbury has teen to Harrisburg once; but we have yet to bear what particular service he rendered there. or, ythat evidence he gave of capacity. Mr. Roth is the keeper of a Lager Beer saloon in the city,•and has some notoriety as being prominent among the German Infidels or Freethinkers. Mr..lrwin is principally known as a bitter ward politica:Li, - who ran onew for Mayor and got —beaten: Mr. Hart is one of Last year's defeated candidates, and is ambitious of a like honor this The nominee for Treasurer, Wm. G. Hawkins, is a very respectable man; but we doubt wheth er he relishes being caught in such company. R. A. Bansman, nominated for Associate Judge, was generally understood to be a Know .._ Nothing in 1051: but that seems to.have been' no objection in the eyes of the Convention : for Ivhco they came to choose between a competent Aintlintelligent German, Mr. liartje, who was on their ticket last year, and Mr. Anshutz, a rene gittle.Know Nothing, for Recorder, the German VMS almost unanimously thrust aside, Ad the nominated. The protest of Mr. McClintock and his thirty odd colleagues against the resolutions is not the least remarkable part of the affair. The reso. lotions, it will be even were not adopted unani mously. At least ono-third of the convention voted, and put on record their. protest, against them. They brand them as "an unholy innova tion on our [their] faith" "a brand of disunion and disorgauization," and "a taint of dishonor," .but, at the same time, they avow their deterred tit to support the men who are pledged to ca out the resolutions, and thus they give their sanction to the " unholy innovation and take upon themselves the- "taint of dishonor." We are thankful that they have been frank enough to characterize their own action with the right:word. rile Convention t ' this convention was not eels of the party. In its issue of iliednesday it warned the Contention not to be guilty of the folly of passing such resolutions as it did, and gave n otice that it would not support or sanction such .a platform: but it will, it seems, support the men who promise to carry out the platform. and so stultify itself by saying one thing and doing another. The Union does not like 'the platform, but Swallows it with a wry mouth, protesting earn estly the while: but will do its best for the ticket. Theihirty-two protesters say the same. The policy of these, fellows is transparent. The editorial articles of the Union and Post, and the protest of the thirty-two, against Repudi ation, arc for the future, and for effect abroad the resolutions of the convention arc for effect at home. The two factions combine to attain, if possible, a local triumph, allowing just suf ficient protestations to be put in to prevent injury abroad. This policy might be consider ed shrewd, if it were not so easily seen through; and it might succeed if the decent men of their party were not disgusted with it. Editorial Correspondence. WASIIINOTON. Aug. 27. The case of highway robbery which was on in the forenoon and witnesses under examination came up for argument_ in the afternoon. Mr. Montgomery math, a spegious pica, expressing his astonishment that gentlemen should think of arguing a case no plainly against them—for de fendants had nut& it appear that NlM'onkey himself was the robber am! Nloamtz - the victim Mr. Acheson made the argument for the cool monwealth, a moil plain, clear and cogentarray of facts, in which he made some points that brought the °pugging counsel to their feet. Ile alluded to the' fact that the testimony of the funny Dutchman had made out that Mountz had spent for whiskey a dime or "levy," whereas the money which they bring into court and show to lie the properly of Mountz did not correspond with the sum he should have upon him accord ing to the testimony in his behalf. After some altercation and the subsequent concluding re marks of Mr. Ache.son, the case was summed up by Judge Gilmore and the jury retired. At half-past five they came in with a verdict of Not Guilty. I fully and freely acknowledge that .the de cision of the Court in such or any case, after proper examination, should be considered final: but I also contend that the rules of common sense and of reason ought to ineve somelveight with us outsiders, and net us imagining whether or not the technical points of law ought to work acquittal in spite of an array of facts against the person indicted. Do we transcend the bounds of our duty to the public when we, in the in terest of public morals question the righteous ness of a verdict of this kind? Here in the possession of Mountz, were found-the purse of M'ConlFey; a scrap of paper which ho had clip ped from a newspaper; a receipt for taxes; and a certain piece of money clearly identified.— How came these all in the possession of Mountz! Why, by some mysterious presto change, the two drunken men swapped qff their property; the money of Mountz gels into the purse of Me- Conkey and the whole into the pocket of Mounts, where with the receipt. and the printed scrap of paper, they are found by the officer within an hour or two of the time of the alleged crime and, no robbery is committed, except that Mc- Conkey has robbed Mounts. Where i.. Signor Blitz' It is such remarkable results that foster into a terrigc frequency, juries not empannelled by law, which stand on no technicalities and which have made its tremble at their deeds.-- From such visitations. Good Lord deliver us' Here moreover is the fellow named Hamilton tried en a charge of burglary, caught by the officer in the store whioli lie hail entered: at the door of the safe which he was trying to rob, and yet because it was not proved that Hamilton turned the key of the door through which he entered the store, he was acquitted; turned out to the terror of the whole community, as full of malice as on the day when lie-was taken pris oner. He is not out of jail 2 I hours before he , is in aft - other difficulty.. Last evening, on the very steps of the Court House others he hail been acquitted, he attempted to interfere with an officer who was arresting one of his I Ilamil ton's) colleagues, and is again in jail to-slay-- Has justice laid its righteous hand upon a man, or has he been made to feel the terrors of the law, when, on some technical catch the crime of which no one doubted him guilty goes unpun ished? You have no idea how the cotnniunity here feel on this matter. Threats'of the most 'serious character are male at all the street coi-- ners. The people say—" Let the man who ha, borne a good character and has been guilty of but one offence, have the benefit of all reasona ble doubts, but give the scoundrel whose whole record reeks - with crime and outrage feel the scourge in the hands of every honest man to lash the instal naked through the world. - ' The trial of Jones and Fife will try the mettle of the Court. The house by the wood which was entered at the dead hour of the night, and 90. W the skull of an innocent man cleft by the axe in the hands of a midnight assassin, clamors for vengeance. And, by the way, I had forgot ten to say that yesterday the' Grand Jurycame into Court, having found a true t,ill against William Jones and Henry Fife, forth° murder of Mr. White. The widow of the tuurilereil man is hero at present. its is a mild, suffering looking woman, against whom such cruel remarks as were made by some at the time of the murder could not be true, judging from her looks. The case of the Commonwealt it against titatill. Ackelson, indicted for forgery, is now before the Court. Messrs. Miller, Wilson and Braden are for the Commonwealth, and Messrs. Montgom ery, Gibson and Koontz for defence. The alleged offence is said to have been committed in 1855, and to have consistei,l in. an interpolation of the words, waiving all exemption" after the words, or value received". The note was drawn in favox_of‘ defendant, Dr. Ackelson, by the prose. cutri's, 'Mrs. Margaret Dye, for the sum of $25, in part payment of a bill for medical treatment. The Court House has been engaged for him to speak in and he will doubtless have an excellent influence in opening the eyes of all reasonable men to the alarming encroachments of the Federal and judiciary powers upon the rights of the States and'of the people. A man named Fogler who was arrested for arson, committel to the jail here and afterwards discharged on bail, was brought to Washington yesterday in irons.
