Pith's Work, "The Invaltd'sotdde ondConmamptere's Mannol." This distressing complaintis unfortunately so frequent as to deserve espeeint notice. That its causes erg identical, or nearly eo, with those of Consumption is obvious from the fact to which I hare already alluded, that the children of asthmatic parents are as liable to Consumption as the children of Consumptive parents, and that instead of Consumption the children of consumptive parents are frequently affected with Asthma. ..... ......IIRID C. ➢CC6p LNYCENCE OT AST MA ON CONSUMPTION. As the effect of Ast ma, however, is to ex pand the lungs IMMO. mutely, it is directly an tagonistic Co Consump ion, and tuberculous do posits can rarely prim ‘ d while any considerable degree of Asthma is !resent. The accidental occurrence of Asthma, ruleed, occasionally cures Consumption, and it isell known that if Asthma abruptly.subside, unl s proper pains be taken ft to keep the lungs pert ctly expanded, Consump tion is liable to set in. Still Asthma may of its f produce a Most distressing death, and if I f de th d c o o es ru n c o e t A r N e result 1 s t:: r :it: s p.: P r o A m wr t . h . e A . disease th system will become so utterly prostrated t t the- patient will at length sink under Con s mption or some kindred disease. The paroxysms of„ , Asthma usually occur at remote intervals, occasionally, indeed, not more than once or twice a year, and only brought on by some unusual exciting cause, as extreme fa tigue or, exposure to cold'or wet. The pates yams at first, too, are usually slight, but gener ally increase in severity as they increase in fre queney, till the patient's life becomes almost a burden, as he suffers either from the dread of the disease or from its actual presence. The -paroxysms of Asthma.; when not caused by cold or exposure, are frequently preceded by dys peptic symptoms, eructations or belching of wind from the stomach, or a collection of wind in the stomach and bowels, to such an extent as to press against the diaphragm, and cause some difficulty of breathing, which may thus be the immediate excitiogeause, of the Asthma. It is occasionally, too, tholigh not alwayi, preceded by languor, drowsinegs, or headache ; heaviness of the head, loss of appetite, costiveness, tight ness across the chest, etc. Occasionally, how ever, the patient haso warning;Of the attack, t , which generally occur at night.. He starts up from his sleep with a sensation of suffocation, and makes every elft to recover his breath, the ai were excluded from his but feels as-if t lungs. The wheezin which accompanies the efforts can often be heard to a considerable dis tance ; the patient is compelled to preserve an erect or sitting posts e, as the moment he at tempts to lie down, 1 o difficulty of breathing becomes greatly increased. Ile will insist on doors and windows being open to allow a free current of ale; and i is a fortunate as well as singular clrcumstance, that a delicate patient may at this time not unfrequently endure with out danger, very great exposure—exposure which might; under other circumstances, be at tended with Serious -consequences. Few who have seeria patient laboring under a severe at tack of Asthma will, forget the expression of anxiety and -distress Xrhieh seems almost char-. acieristic. Re is usually in a chair; bolstered In bed, or mere fee uently. perhaps, sitting with his hands his knees. • . . e,After a few Ito . violence of the parox ysm subsides. and the 'patient . generally begins to raise considerable quantities of mucus, altho' thials not always the- case. The patient Kee -1 ently falls asleep.' and awakes comparatively comfortable, though senores of the muscles of the chest, occasional shootingpains, some stric ture across•the chest, . ore or lees wheezing may d i he noticed ,for some . As I have already ' ted, the attacks, which at first were rare perhaps recurring only in the spring or fall, become more and more frequent, and often. too, of much longer duration, until t the patient seems to suffer constantly. I have I treated cases wherethe patient had not for years Ibada comfortable night's rest.- A few of these, I wit ICthe result s, will be cited hereafter " - Asthma I sometimer - Decor in early childhood, and is oc cosi molly a sequel of whooping-cough. ' Hay Asthma, a 1))rm of the disease usually making its appearance only in the months of July or August, is not unfrequent in this coun try and for this particular variety a sea-voyage will often be found the most effectual remedy. For accounts of the forums of Dyspncea, or diffi culty in breathing,, often called Althorn, the reader is referred to Dr. Fitch's work, from which the above is taken. . TREATMENT OP ASTHMA. INES . It is impossible here to enter fully into the subject of the treatment of Asthma. This is a matter where the patient can rarely or never prescribe for himself, but where great care, judgement and experience are requisite. The cause of the disease must be in the first instance ascertained find the treatment boned upon this. Generally speaking au alterative treatment is requisite, combined of course with the use of approPriate medieinal inhalations. In many cases we direct a wet saltjacket to bo constantly worn, and with great benefit. We direct the free use of cold water. bathing, frictions, and ample but regular and moderato exercise in the open sir, avoiding undue . fatigue. exposure or sudden violent exertion. Freedom from care and undue mental labor and greet attention to the diet and state of thutomach are also requi• site, and these with ouch - modifications and. additions as the peculiarities of the case may demand, will se " ri oy afford relief in all COACT, where a cure is nvaettcable. But after relief. ••ccured, much care on the part of the patient will be neccessary to retain health and PO to strengthen the lungs es to overcome the predisposition to the disease. In this, special instructions are always 'given, and much Infer . legion on this subject will be found in the ..invalid's Guide." WHAT CASTS ARE CTRADLT. Those cases of Asthma are most readily re lieved where the cause can be most easily and effectually removed, and where the patient *pos sesses youth and R good conetitution. The older the patient and the longer time he has been af fected as a general rule the more difficult the cure will be. I can, however, refer to the case of the father-in law of Mr. nonillion E. Wright, of Nino Mile Run, a few miles from Pittsburgh, to show what can and has been done in the case of an Asthmatic, nearly (I think) sixty-five years of age. I frequently had the pleasure of relieving cases of several years standing. One of the most severe end interesting cases en my record is that of a 'son of Mr. Curtis of Cleve land, theparticulare of which were given in. the Cleveland Herald one of the proprietors of that, journal, a frien of Mr. nertis and person ally cognisant of. all the particulars in the case. I had not left home for ten. years without on attendant. After some unusu al labor, as'an attempt to speak in court, I was sure to have an attack and usually a severe one; my nervous system was greatly deranged, and my stomach seriously out of order. In this state I applied to Dr. S. S. Fitch, of New Yeti:, who afforded some relit .to my nervousness, but although I continuedlis treatment a year or up wards he could not and did not stop my asthma; my attacks continued as regularly as before with their' attendant violence. After this I concluded to try Dr. Calvin M. Fita's treat went, and 'accordingly wrote to him et Fitts burgh in May, 7856, where he then was. •Dr C. M. I was pleased with this honest, guarded answer, in many respects different from what I had before heard, and at once placed myself under his Care In less than three months, I had experienced greater relief than I had ever found from any source. The month of August, I passed with less disease and slept better than I had done in the corresponding month, ten years previous. /n November in consequence of e xposure and over exertion at court, I had a. slight attack, but it passed off and I live had none since. I, have slept more-in bed tind with more comfort, within six months peat, than in ten years before; Indeed it seems strange to me that L oan go ~tab ed and sleep as other men. lam not in agoni and oppressed as formerly, but. sleep like a child, as quietly and sweetly es Itattld.desire. ; '1 eta satisfied from what .
