McKENNEY SNODGRASS, of Mifflin CALIFORNIA NEWS. —The arrival of the Col lector of this port, together with many promin ent politicians, on the Golden Gate, which ves sel reached here on the 15th inst., has tended - to increase the political excitement, and hundreds of erpectants of office under the new Adminis tration are zealously employed in securing offices from the one and nominations to office from the other. All over the State the wire-workers are "laying pipe" for the Democratic State Conven tion, which convenes at the capital on the 14th pros. The fetid between the Broderick and Weller factions is growing in intensity, and nn interesting and exciting campaign has already commenced, The administration will probably concentrate their forces on Col. Weller as their Gubernatorial candidate, while the Broderick clique will bring forward either JudgelleCorkle or John Conners as their competitor for the nom ination. It is said tlutt Col. Washington, who assumes the duties of the Collectorship in July, intends to rigidly enforce the Democratic doctrine of "ro tation in office," by dismissing the army of Cm tona-House officials, all of whom are to make way for new aspirants. Although there are but two hundred offices within his gift, upwards of a thousand anxious applicants are throng ing the streqs, or ~s itting at the receipt ofgustoms." each in the confident belief that Ito is to be insured a place at the Nadia crib. Meanwhile the Republicans are not idle, as they have already called a State Convention, and mnde arrangements for presenting a fttil ticket for thasuffrages of the people. The Know nothing Party is virtually e - „tinet and the great mass of the membersof the late or ganization have gone over to the Democracy. or enlisted in the Republican muse. Mining matters, as usual, mononolize the at tention of the great majority of the inhabitant's of the interior. Quartz mining enterprises are resulting more favorably., and extensive arrang 'meats are in progress for carrying on this de scription of mining in nearly all of the interior counties. Continued and successful exertions in wagon road enterprises have occupied the attention of very many of the people of the State. A stage coach, laden with passengers, has made the trip from Oroville through the Sierra Nevada, to Honey Lake Valley, the western terminus of the National wagon road, and has safely made the trip, to and fro, between Placerville and Carton Valley. The energy and liberality displayed in those counties interested will probably insure the construction of two or more good wagon roads to intersect with the national road it. Utah. * The crops throughout the State promise to be more plentiful, and harvested in better order than was anticipated a few weeks ago. They will not fall• much below the average of former years, owing to the greater quantity of soil sown and planted. In the southern part of the State the thought has seriously injured the crops, and iu (set: every species of vegetation. The cattle have suffered greatly, and many hose died from hunger and thirst. A RICII OILATOLLICAZ CLLNIAX.—The Toledo Blade says that to good story is told of an aspir ing orator who held forth on the 4th of July, at one of the many celebrations in the "rural dis tricts" in Ohio. Ilia maiden speech duly pre pared, and the telling portions . committed Co memory, ho found himself, in a state of thrill ing nervousness, before the people. All went on well, and he had, in a measure, recovered hie self-command, when he arrived at the grand climax of his speech, that portion of it in which he was to allude to `•The • American Eagle." Proudly he began, and tossed off, almost flip pantly, "The American Eagle, gentl men, that proud bird ! the emblem of our liber es, gentle men, as she stands—"when sudden' the rest of • his labored simile faded from his memory. Ter rified at the discovery ho gasped—he seized, nervously, o tumbler of water, and turned it by mistake, inside his cravat, and took a fresh start with a rush of desperation which bid fair to burst the bonds of his fettered imagination, and soar majestically away on the wings of the apos trophised "bird." "The American Eagle; the American EAGLE, gentle MEN, that proud bird of our liberties, as she stands—standing—as she stands—standing" (with great vigor,) "with one foot on the Alleghardea and the other on the Rocky Mountains, and stretching her brood wings from the Atlantic to the Pacific, shall—, stretching her broad wings—with one foot on the Rea?, Mountains, and the other one on the Alle .ghanies, eltall—shall nowt., gentlemen and fel low citizens, in the gloriouilreedam of —her NA. 1 TIDE Ain !" FIRST DEA TII - FROM j CLLOW FEVER,—The case of the bark Lure lliywood is still fresh in the public natal. This vessel left Gonsalves eu the 12th of May; and while she was in that port.and during her passage, ftye persons died onboard of yellow fever. The only two of her crew lett up on her amial were in goadhealth, but the Park was sent to the lower Quarantine anchorage, a portion of her cargo having been discharged and stored at the old Quarantine. Two persons,be longing to South Orrington, 31e., where the ves sel belongs, were employed to go on board of her as ship-keepers, as captain antimate. It was represented to . ttieni by. the agent -of-the owners that there was no danger of infection. After a thorough ventilation she obtained a per mit to come up within-dive hundred yards of the City and anchor; but, fortunately, she was boarded for a fialinspection by the .flealth Officer, after she was under way, when the mate Mr. William Gold, of South Orrington, Me., was found tube nick.. . . The man was sent to the Hospital, nod Alm vessel once more sent below. Yesterday this man died—an unmistakeable case of yellow fe ar, making the sixth victim to this disease from , on board the Luey Heywood. The Doctor, however secures ourreporter that this is the-only.muns of yellow fever that has oc curred at the Quarantine, and that there is no new cases in the Hospital. Chicago Tribiaie an account of the killing 'of arunaway slave by his pursuers - near Nashville, fill., and adds: •• This case, in some of its details, resembles one we heard of yesterday- as having occurred I at Sparta, in Randolph county. • - Rho report is I that three slaves ran away from their owners, near the Pilot Knob, in MiFl.9Ol/Ti: tbatthey were traced to Ste Genevieve, when , they crossed the I river, three young men close upon their heels, and made for Sparta; that. they were overtaken before reaching that place; that the negroes gave battle, and fired five shots at ono of the young men, and that he then fired at andkilled one of the slaves, and wounded another: that, worse still, Le cut of the head of the dead negro, got alcho hol and preservedit in this way, intending to take it for exhibition to the Pilot Knob. We can hardly believe the latter part of the story. It is too horrible, too atrocious, to be enacted by any man, unless in. a moment of ungovernable passion. It is an act of barbarity which will call forth the condemnation of all men, however ranch provocation there may have been for it. We hope for the honor of humani ty, that there is some mistake—some gross ex aggeration about the statement. One thing is certain, that it will find no justification—no palliation—no apologists among any considern-. blc portion of our people; all will alike condemn and abhor it. LYNCIITSCI IN lOWA—More Hanging in Cedar Comte.—We learn from Mr. Wise, of Cedar county, that four horse thieves (instead of two, as stated in our last issue) were arrested near Tipton on Thursday last. Their names- were Alonzo Gleason, Ed. Soper, can Arsdel and Wal ter Cassidy. Gleason and Soper were tried by the mob in the court yard at Tipton, and on 'Fri day evening were taken to Big Rock (eighteen miles above Tipton) and hang. Soper made a full confession, implicating twenty or thirty cit izens of Tipton and vicinity, as being concerned with the gang. Some of these have absconded for fear of lynching. It is somewhat remarka ble that, notwithstanding the fearful example made of these horse thieves in this county week before last, the work of stealing still goes on.— On Monday night, a horse was stolen from the stable of David Wright, three miles south of Tipton. and on Wednesday' night ono from the stable of Mr. Ford. Great excitement prevails throughout the county, and we fear that the people will do deeds of rashness under its influence, for which they will repent hereafter. Five lives have not =ti nted their vengeance. We learn that some mem bers of the Vigilance Committee have sworn that Cassidy (whose trial has not yet taken place) shall not live longer than to-morrow (Tuesday.) This is truly a deplorable slate of affairs.—)!us =tine Journal, lith but GrtRAT FIRE AT DAVENPORT, loWA.—Sunday morning we were visited by a fire, the only one we bare had for a long time, and which destroy ed more buildings, and property of greater ag gregate value, than any that ever before occur red in this city. A little before eight o'clock, the rear part of Felix's saloon caught fire, 'and in a few minutes the house was in flames. This house was situated on the west side of Brady be tween Fourth and Fifth streets. The whole block was composed of frame buildings two stories high,,numberit% altogether seventeen, and all occupied excepting three. The lower stories were occupied by business establishmenst. In the up per stories of these houses there were a number of families and two physicians' offices. Of these seventeen buildings, the only ones now standing are the three nearest the corner of Fourth (one of these much injured) and the building on the corner of Fifth. Thus thirteen houses were de stroyed, none of them very costly, it is true, but nearly every one of them in active use, and bringing good rents to their owners. The tire was finally stopped by the engines, and by tearing down houses. A large frame building in the rear of the block, owned by the Catholic Church and used by families, and the brick school houSe of the church, were only saved by the most active exertions. Ml:llnce. to V;CKSIIeit.G. AND Casa? Exult.- 3ISST.—On Sunday, the 28th ult., a man named Cornelius McCoy shot a negro boy, 18 or 20 years i.lil, as the boy Walt quietly ritlingon horse back through the streets of Vicksburg. The boy Ml 9 a slave of G. W. Benner, and the mur der was comutitted without the slightest provo cation. Marshal Fagan immediately arrested McCoy and lodged him in jail. Great erritement prevailed on Monday, public meeting of citizens seat held at the Court House, and resolutions condemning the conduct of the Marshal wail passed, after which he was requested to resign. Mr.. FOUNI:Y,not having succeeded in purchas ing. the Philadelphia Poimylranian, will issue a new Democratic Taper in that city before the close of the present month. Already there. are evident symptoms of a fight between the two Democratic organs, the old one and the new one. e hope that Rico and Forney will do up each other's jobs thoroughly. May they pull each other's hair. May they, zonge each other's eyes. May they batter or bite off each other's noses. May they choke each other till their lying tongues hang out of their mouths. May they kick each other with the most s.harpdoed of boots, shoes and brogans. °fuss,: PEEL—The especial attention of pa rents and others is called to the following facts: —The New York Journal of Commerce learns that a little son 'Robert Oliver, of that city, about five years of age, is now lying in a very critical condition from the effects of eating orange peel. Parents cannot be too cautious in keeping orange peel from their children, as it contains an ac tive poisonous oil, which in many instances, has caused the death of persons who indiscreet ly made use of them. Life is jeopardized every' time the rind is taken into the stamtich. THE quantity of wheat exported from Canada in 1884 was 1:442,877 bushels, of the value of 1:524,584 In 1865 the quantity exported was 3,198,748 bushels, valued at .£1,482,219. The amount of Customs receips in Canada, in 1855, was £787,414, and in 1836 no less than £1,018,- 312, showing an increase in this dgpartment nlone of £230,098. DArrn Foamir, of Franklin, Pa., abused his wife 80 that her father took her home. In re venge for this, Forney set fire to the" . old gentle man's house and $70,000 worth of property was consumed.
