Eton= Der—Arrestspox SessiON.—Leriag ton, Noy . 29 . .—Dr. Leland was appointed. to Pralatittheeeraton before the Board of Educa tion nut year. The Overture , expressing an entire want of sympathy in all efforts to make a ziew transla tion of the Scriptures, was adopted. A Presbytaq to be called Lake Superior, in Minnethota Territory, was organized, to be at tached to the Synod of Wisconsin. An Overture from Carlisle Presbytery; 'affirm ing that the sentiment in our Confession, theta; man may not marry of his wife's kindred nearer than of his own, is not in accordance with the feelings of a large portion of the community; that It tends to difficulties, and cannot be en forced; and that the article in the 'Confession which contains it should be referred to the Pres byteries for amendment; was taken up and rend, and then laid on the tibia: The Complaint of I. E. 13elville and fourteen othern of the • Presbytery' of .Miami against the Synod of Ozanne:l, was takenup. They com plain of a censure pasted by the Sytibti on a section of the records of, Presbytery. It was resolved to proceed with this matter iu the do-' liberatire, andnot in thejuditidi form. • Apart) , interested being sick, the subject was postponed till Monday at 10 o'clock. ,wralertY fltXo.l.o4llCal, Sax/Saar. Dr. Moore, from the Committeeon Theological , Seminaries, reported in relation to the Western Seminary; ,reCoininencTing that the number of Dirociors be increased one-fourth, and some for , four years; that a fourth Professor be appoint ed; that Mr. Samuel J. Wilson be nominated to that chair -tthat of Scelealeaticel history); that the Professor's saltiry be graduated by the Tres- " tees; and also. nominating the additional DI- 'rectors. Mr. .MoClung, of fialtsburg Pres., said he was I instructed by his - Presbytery to oppose the elec- ! tion of a fourth Professor. Ile thought there were not funds for his support, and that the churches in the region were unwilling to bear the expense. He thought there were other in- tercets in the country demanding attention; and that three " professors were enough Mr. Wallace; of Redstone Pres., was instruct- ed to oppose the appointing of afourth,profes- I sor in any Seminary., But if the Assembly bed , established it as the or der , for other Seminaries, he wished this one to be on an equality. But he felt doubtful as to the provision made at Al legheny for .the support requisite. Tet from 1 what appeared on all sides, he felt'as though he should rote for the professorship. Mr. Mcllvaine, of Ohio Pres., ens sorry that ! there should appear to be any division on this I question. The Assembly had settled the ques- I tion of a fourth professor for Allegheny, ties years ago, and had reiterated, by appointments. Dr. Hall had been appointed and Mr. '.. Dicken- I son. either accepted. Four professors' I houses had been built, and over $5,000 on hand toward the professorship. Ho claimed the sympathy of the Assembly. The Western I should be made a first rate Seminary. It was I worthy. Tho country was worthy. An agent I was appointed to raise funds. Prospects were I bright. The person nominated had taught for ' two years in the Institution, and was eminently eccetable. 1 Mr p . Lee, of Ohio Pres., said the Trustees of 1 the Seminary were a different body from the', Directors. They have on hand 564=0 for the fourth professorship. . On this they could not anemia a Professor. but if funds could be raised, 1 the Trustees would rejelceto have the.appoint- ment. And now be a assured that the means could be had to support the nominee, for a rea- ' noble time, till the endowment. M r. Lee then I heartily endorsed the movement. An agent had been appointed to Collect . funds, and things ap: , appeared highly favorable. i Dr. Breckenridge opposed the nomination I made because the candidate was a young man. Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Young, and Dr. Swift, made remarks favorable to the report. , The Assembly adjourned with prayer. I NINTH Dar--Sdhirday,May 80.—The Com- I wittee on Theological - Seminaries -presented the remainder of their report, in reference to the Western. Seminary. Remarks were continued in reference to the points presented by R. J. Breckenridge yesterday, via: The propriety of allowing the Board to nominate a Professor, and of electing to that office, one who was - without experience as a Pastor. The Chairman of the,Committee then obtained i leave to withdraw the nomination of the Board, ' and immediately nominated Mr. Wilson on his own responsibility. The election wes deferred until Monday. . I Dr. MOOIII nominated David McKinney, D. D., and three others, west of the Alleghe -1 nies, in place of James S. Woods, D. D., and three others, east of the mountains, and advo cated this change. Dr. Breckenridge did not fear from appoint menu of Directors outside of the territorial Um- I - its of Seminaries, and thought it , would be a ; very advisable thing to apPoint tie oreix from Kentucky, in Alleghtinj anal Princeton.. Thi. Synod eV-Virginia last year had thought that Danville was conflicting with their SemMary, but he did. not wish to do so Ile Was himself , connected with Virginia by perental ties, and ' was partly , a Virginian, at least so far as tor s. proved Kentucky stock could-yet-pass, by the Ho thought there was - Very little'danger in choosing Directors-from :a wide Ilield, bnt.thatt there wenidlemori el9cieneYll'theY weritelio sen front therichiltY. . The Neertkhooleetierat . Aoseanbly. Culoritsoiliay 29. This morning, Rev. Ur. Wing; delegate ontit liambly to ,the'Oeneral Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, presented his report.: He stated that he was received with thentmost kind ness and respect, and he believed the corresrusw dance world be profitable and pleasant to both bodies. The Committee on Church Polity reported in favor of opening correspondence with the MEL Reformed Preaby. Church. Report adopted. The motion of Mr. Cutler, made on Them* afternoon, that the motion to - adopt the report of the Committee on Bills and Overtures on Sir very be postponed in order to take up a substi tute for said report was called up. The Moderator called attention to the Seth Rule in regard to the conduct of commisidcment in times of exciting debate. Mr. Guthrie, of Ohio, being entitled to the deter ' gave way for a moment in courtesy to Mt. Wallace; who wished to make en ex - planation. Mr. Wallace, of Philadelphia, said he watt pre pared in due time to furnish evidence toestab- Ugh the position the Com had taken in regaid to two classes of opiniont in the South: If It appears that gentlemen from the South had changed their opinions since they had come to the icesembly, th6Tommitteo would not bold to their report. Mr. McLellan asked the privilege to read a paper which had been drawn up this morning; giving in an explicit manner the position of the Southern churches on the question of Slavery. It Is as follows: Tilt POUTION or TUE 110IITHIAN cnoactt DIU/ISM Wo do not believelhat the system of Ameri can slavery as nn appointment of God, stands precisely in all respects upon the. mune footing with the family relation—with that of husband and wife—parent and child. _ But, upon the contrary, this system differs from the family relation both with respect to the date of its origin, the nearness and sacred ness of its relations, the nature of its peculiar obligations, the design and length of its contin nation. The relation of master and slave did, not ex- lit from the beginning, RS did that of the family relation, nor do we believe that it will continue to tho end. But slavery does exist by divine ordination and recognition, for wise purposes to be over ruled for his glory, in the elevation; efv ligation and final redemption of the African race. Sin cannot bo predicated on the relation itself but on the abuse of that relation. It stands in the same category with the family relation in the fact that it is ordained of God,in the sense above explained, and in the act that. like the family relation it is a subject 'of divine legislation.— When we say that the elavebolding relation 'is right,' wo do not mean to say that every system of slavery le right as it may have existed in oth er ages 'and*: other countries, but only as it now exist. With us, and under all the circumstances in which we are now placed. When we say "It is rigid" for our churches to bold olives under the present circumstance, we mean to say that they are actingconsistently with the spirit and litter of the gospel, in sodoing. And were we to adopt the contrary, as the resolutions under considera tion would have us assert, to wit: that we hold slaveholding to be wrong would place us be fore the world as destitute not only of the - spirit of chrlstianity, but as being bereftofevery prin ciple of moral honesty. We believe that the elave is not prepared for freedom; that to give it to him now under the circumstances would not be best, either for master or olave. We believe that freedom is better than slave my where men are prepared to appreciate it— that. slavery is better than freedom under tor thin circumstances--juet as it is with humiux governments. Our American republicanism may be the best form of government for us ;but under present circumstances it might be a great curse to Russia. or Mexico. F. A. Ross, E. it. McLean, A. C. Guthrie, Esq., of Ohio, then. proceeded to address the Assembly in. an able and lengthy argument to show that the Bible does not sus tain slavery as it exists in the United States. Rev. Mr. Handy, of Virginia, followed ina short speech, endeavoring to prove that the Church did not desire agitation on the subject. Its was however, in favor of open, clear, honest and de risive action now that it had been broached on the door of the Assembly. In the afternoon, Mr. ilastinge, an aged and very able lawyer, from Itochester, N. T., address ed the Assembly on the Bible argument. s The ground he aasumea was that God tolerates but does not sanction slavery: He was in favor of reaffirming the action of the Assembly in 1818, making ehweheldiug a matter of discipline only when it appeared that the master held Ids slavee solely for purposes of gain end-was not endear oring by all practicable means to alleviate their condition and ultimately restore them to freedom whenever they shall have become fit to- preceive and enjoy it. Mr. Hastings occupied most of the afternoon, and was listened to with deep at tention. Rev. Mr. Corwin,of California, and Rev. Mr. Hill, of Califoria, made some remarks -on the subject—the former taking strong Northern ground, the latter, though.amorthern man, ex! pressing moderate views,, - the result of twelve years residence in 3fiastiurL The Asseinbly meets again this evening when the discussion will again be resumed. r„ . EvreLea lissetott.—The Assembly convened at a quarter to eight. Mr. Wm. Dickerson, of Kentucky, made a very logical argument on the constitutional authority.of the Assembly to Sake disciplinary cognisance of slaveltolding.. The I organic law of the Church was..an associative agreement, framed like, any compact, with ex:. press provisions to be observed by all the par; ties thereto. It vests in the Assembly authority to bear testimony.agthuit errors in doctrine and immoralities of practice, and then proceeda.in the Confession of Faith and Catechisms to desig nate what are jatch errors and immoralities.— Slavery is nowhere included In thecatehigna, and consequently the Churehhruino authority teetev outside of its °riptide law tecolideninind discip! -line as &heresy what the Where of the Church did not incorporate in the constitution th'it'her-.' ety. When that law was: formedolaveholding was prevalent in the Church, and if it bad.been considered an evil, it would certainly have been included amongst the errors and brunet-aide! to_ be testified against. - lie urged that the Present proposed action of the Assembly' as not !Wil -1 mate or authorized. The proper, method would be for this body to overture slaveholding to the . Presbyteries as unlawful and unacripturalr, and if they see fit let them change law so aa to render slaveholding a disciplinary offence, and thus drive the Southern churches from the bosom of .the Church. • • Mr. Dickerson. proceededto make a Bible sr-, gument on -slavery; and .te tire is picture's& the results of the slavery egitatiolfilpon l/te negro race; upon the efficiency of the Church in 'die' South ; upon fraternalintereouree vitheognate denominations; upon tluttersontUrelellons the ministry of the Church id.diferent section's ;- en - the reverencelar God, and rot:Peet l'or the ble, is the.country at largevand on the duty of the Church, to fhlfil the command of Christ to send the Gospel to ever* creitort, • The Assembly then adjourned. - • .
