F.ITTSBURGH GAZETTE PITTSBURGH: THUM/a MORNIA - 5, MAY 21, 1851 0771CLIII: PAM* OP nil Girt. 11116 OF THE CITY BD NENBORHOOD. Jut WILLI/MC—WO learn from the Wheellog Times of Tuesday that the polies of that city were on Monday in puritan, of a person supposed to be Jim Williams, the alleged murderer of Samuel H. White, but at a late hour he bed not bun arrested. He was lurking in the woods near Wellsburg on Sunday, and was frightened from his hiding place by a party of gentlemen of that town and tracked to Wheeling. Be was seen on board the steamer Inter:lump on Mon day. That al I other boats were thor oughly searoh , but the alleged murderer was lot to be found. There in, we may add, a mystery about the actions of this individual which it is difficult to explain on nay other grounds than that he le in some manner continued either with the White murder or some other outrage which the police have not yet fathomed. He woe seen about week ance.as we learned in Washington county on Tuesday, Cit far from where the White mar. der was committed, skulking about, armed with pistol and knife, as if intent upon killing whoev er should .undertake to arrest him. Yet, we learned direct from the most touroubied authori ty, in Washington borough, on Met Monday, that William. was known to have bad no connection with the murder of White, at least none which the pollee were ab le to trine. We betray no confidence in making the above statement Yet this Williams' oonecience or his fears tell him that he hi worthy of arrest and cleverly' punish ment for something—else whythle skulking and ommealmentt—why these deadly arms carried by. day; and nightl—why this constant endeavor to escape from the menu which molt be hateful or awfully &nineties, ae it has been said the 101111115 of murder often are to Um perpetrator'? Neenassocx.—ll. Barthanan. Esq., of Cincinnati, has oonironnicsted to The Prairie Fenner, an intereating item relative to the No ehannock potato, which will be interesting to all otrtyeaders. It was an lateresting trait in the Boman, as it now is in the English character, that they preserve with the greatest care Cu Ouselogical tree of their family. Aye I they know the blood of their horses,—the English do C.—and of their cows: Bet the race, stock, pa rentage;ctra, of that most excellent of esculents, ' the Irish potato, they appear to consider of no Importance. Mr. 's artlole touches the his tories' question of Feshaneookr: "It is - a seedling of Western Pennsylvania, from the banks of -Neehannock Creek, in Mercer county---hence Its name. I am a native of West. ern PenAsyltranis, and have been familiar with this pato from boyhood. It was first made known about fifty years ago, arid wu so highly valued, that many -persons took it over the mountains in their eaddiesbage, on horseback, for treed. In that way it was aleo introduced in to the vicinity of Pitnburgb, by the late Wm. Andersols, who got it from the farm where It originated: In the year 1702, a settlement was made on the sisters of the lihenango, Nestiannook and Itahoning, principally by Bootch Irish. The soil and climate were favorable to the growth of potatos, and those from that region soon became celebrated—eepeolally the pew seedling, -the Neshannook. Min Prow:ling& PraalmitrOlf, May 19.—After the Grand July retired, the case of the Commonwealth vs. John Carr, was called, when the Dletriet Attor ney, Mr. Wilson. applied for a continuance of the case, on the ground that a witness of chief importaLe to wit, the wife of the man whom Carr is alleged to have killed, wee unable to be present on account of heavy sickness. While the matter was in course of discussion, Carr was brolied into Court. One could "not bat look with amazement on the man. it to alleged that, haring had a quarrel with a neighbor or tenant of hie. Carr Vent to his own house, took down a gun heavily loaded, went to Mellen (his ten ant's) and shot him as he eat upon the side of a bed. This was done In the presence of Bietlee wife, or—as the defence alleges—hls mistress. And yet the man against whom the indictment for the above crime is pending, is bent down with the weight of many years, being about 89 yams of age his thin whiter haire fell in stray looks over his wrinkled brow, but under his shaggy gray eyebrows, the eye, quick and on. ; easy, dashed either with apprehension or curt oetty as he crept painfully into Court, leaning upon a knotty staff. He reminds one of what Qailp might have been, had he lived to wear gray hairs. An old blue coat, drawn tightly over the bunch which age had piled between his shoulder', as high se to the top of hie head, nearly, "bowed the damp and wear of nearly nine months of prison life. His trembling hand grasped with convulsive toms his stick, as If to deal a blow, and his foot tottered as he crept into Ms seat near hie counsel,—who ie W. Mont gomery, Esq., M. C. elect—and glowered around with Ms weasel-like search to get the gauge and dimensions of the Court, and ascertain whether his ease was on or not. After considerable dis— cussion the WOO was poetponed. and the old man, who was ready to offer any amount of bail, was remanded to jail, to await the '.law's delay." la this ease the Commonwealth hoe the services of able and careful men—Mr. Wilson, District At• torney, assisted by Robert Koontz, Erq , of Washington. Mr. Montgomery appears for the defendant. The ease of Commonwealth vs. Geo. Harger, was called and attachments were homed for cer tain witnesses necessary in the trial. It was consequently postponed until such times as both sides should be able to proceed. The !sots in this case appear to be these: In the winter of 1856, - Leverton Thomas was tried and convicted In the Quarter Sessions of Allegheny county for forgery. George Harger was one of the chief witneeses for the Common wealth. Soon after, Harger claimed to have a note of $llOO on Thomas, whioh Thomas pro. nounced • forgery. Barger cued Thomas for gander for making Saab an allegation, and was taking some depositions at Hillsborough, Math ington connty, where he exhibited the $llOO note. Immediately upon seeing it, Thomas made infor mation and had Harger arrested for forging it. The Grand Jar) , at the last term found a true bill, and the cause was continued at Defends:2l'e instance. Thomas and !larger are both old men, and were for many years quite intimate. They have both had a good deal of litigation, and are well known in the Courts of Washington and Al legheny counties ad exceediogly shrewd men.— From their former friendly relations, and their celebrity se litigants, and from the large number of witnesses subpoenaed on each side, much inter ! est is felt in the result.
