The town began to fill up on Monday and On yesterday afternoon and latiSnlght every availa ble place of lodging In the borough was Great anxiety tied interest was felt by ell psi- Sea. Moth difficulty seemed to exiet fromithe first. Philadelphia had two sots of delegates. The Eteppblioana had one election , unde&lhe call of Me. Gibbons and the - Union Anniihaits who had another elected under the.legislative. A.oauene was called and held laet night as which a general feeling or the pulse of the dif• ferent sections elle - State took place. There WIS a great-deal of-eseitemen t relative to violent' matters airquiter a number of epeeches made. Nothing definitegrew Out of it however, except the.appointment of Messrs Fox of Dauphin, Renrishots of Berke and Ble.Calment.of Penang°, as a committee to ascertai n . the names of the 'delegates. The difficulties coneerning the lPhiladelphia matters grew in intensity until this morning sad there teemed likely to be no mode of extriee lion left. The dispute even extended to the mode of calling the convention together. At last the delegates from the west took the matter in hand and as mediators resolved that Thos. J. Powers should call the convention to order and _that S. B. Chase should be temporary ohainnao. Mr. Powers did call the convention to order and Mr. Chase presided. Things went on emoothly until the different delegations began to be called by the secretory Then a debate sprang up between the two nai -1 adelphta delegations. At het a committee af ter an exciting debate was appointed upon ore dentist& That committee consisted of nine per , sone appointed by the president. ' A committee was also appointed upon perma nent organization. They came in and reported the name of J.T. Bowen as president with a large number of vice presidents and eceretaries. Mr. Bowen on taking the chair made a brief and fellaltions address. During the afternoon nothing was done save the selection of the president. The convention was awaiting the report of the tummittee on cre dentials. In consequence of that report not be• lug made the convention at 5 P. M. adjourned until 7 P. M. The night session had been, heretofore, mere skirmishing, ThoZonvention met after the re. eels and the Hall - Was , immensely crowded.— Every nook and corner was full. The outsiders were evidently Intensely interested: The Con. Tenth:o remained for some time without doing anything, At last the committee came in and reported eo far as. Philadelphia was concerned that the Republican delegation was entitled to their-seab. The Chairman, Mr. Coffey, of Indigos, of the Committee repudiated the reeolntiort because tho Committee had exceeded Itepowers. Mr. Edie, of Somerset', took the same view of the matter. Mr. Cooper, of the city, moved to adopt the report of the Committee. This was aceeeded to and the Committee was discharged. Mr. McClure of Franklin renewed his resolu.i tion of the morning to admit every man who had regular credentials to either Convention.--s. Re "supported it in a very strong speech Mr MeCalment seconded in a very pithy speech. Mr. McKnight of your county moved an amendment, asking both the Philadelphia dale gations to withdraw from the Convention and try' to reconcile their differences. Judge Kelly made a long sod very impressive speech in favor of the adoption of the resolu tions of the Committee, and against the popesitlon of Mr. McClure. Mr. Simpson, of the Union Americans, replied to him at length, in favor of the admission tithe other delegation. The excitement still grew in intensity Mr. Thorne made a bold, strong, animating spee'alo n favor of the admission of the Union Assert,. cans. Mr. Cook, a most singular genius in his man ner, from Weitnioreland, with groat eccentric'. I hies, made a powerful appeal in favor of the ad mission of all. Notwithstanding his peoulierl. ties, he made a most favorable Impre esion upon the Convention. When Mr. Cook closed his remarks, Senator Cooper followed in a speech condemning the idea tbs.t the Union Americana should bo re jected. Senator Cooper Is a member of the BepubliCan 'delegation. He denounced certain statements of Judge Kelly as "cowardly and covertly mean." Judge Kelly repelled the imputation In very bitter terms. Mr. Gilpin the former Mayor of the city, also made a speech in favor of the admission of the Republican delegation from the city. The vote was then taken and It was passed, that in all disputed cues the delegations should be admitted to emote, end full votes. The con vention then adjourned until tomorrow. Tug Amestoos Manors Altosa Tan N siais.—ln the whole range of the nighty tent of Asia whither self-theritiolog men have gone to preach the tidings of salvation there is perhaps no spot more interesting, and we sin ' certain no name is more frequently mentiongin the letters of the American missionaries than Oroomiah. We believe, although our geograph ical knowledge as to this point is not strictly reliable we fear, Oroomiah is a province la Per. eis where tho people of the Nestorian princi pally reside, and where a greater work has been dents`by American Protestant Missionaries than in any other portion of Asts. These people have hitherto, in many instances, teen the ob. I jests of mach care and solicitude to the Perelan government, and have upon the whole attained ' under favorable circumstances and careful and judialens instruction a high place in the scale of Christian civilization. The American Protestant I churches will regret to learn that a movement has been made by the Persith government to destroy the miseion and root it out. The fol. lowing is an extract from an article in the Lan don Daily News: It Is supposed that Azker. Khan, the Com. minder-in-Chief of the Persian forces on the frontiers of Kurdistan, has hsd much to do with exciting the enmity or the Priebe Minister against the miselonaries. Being the military Governor of Oroomiah, he bo came well acquainted with tho character and laboas of these men. lie saw that they were likely to be a serious cheek upon his rapacity, es they were witnesses to all he did in proemieh, and could easily report every easeof : Syranni and oppression; Two years ago, *hlle this individual was at ooqrt, a finnan watt issued, which was intended to fetter all the operations of the mLselortaries. It prohibited them from teaching females and, virtually, from having school/ of any kind.— They were forbidden to teach the English lan guage to any end, to employ 'or' , lbutherize any native l liestonan to preach, or to send preachers to any other place; and the people were ordered not to attend the preaching of the missionaries. A censor was to be placed over their press, to aeo that nothing should be printed against the previous religions notions of the Nestorian peo ple; and, to crown all, the two dissolute and abandoned bishops already referred to wore constituted general-directors of everything per taining to the American minion . . Azker l a Khan, who is; n very fit instrument for such purpose, was sent to Oroomiah by the Governor, for the sole purpose of seeing that the firman wee carried tato effect. For some reason or other he has cot, however, until recently, shown much vigor in the execution of his wicked task; but since the was had fairly broken out with England, be oversteps in vigor even the Armen itself. Parents aro strongly threatened with the armrest punishment if they lased their children to the gamete Natieeteachers are fined, im• prisoned" or beaten, overt those who &reran ac tually engaged in teaching; netted preachers are also cruelly seized and beatinadood, some times without even the pretence of a fault. j In deed every individual among the people whb is known an having become enlightened in hie re ligious eiewe, and intelligent, under the training of the missionaries, is pow.a marked man, and liable to 'entree every species of: abuse and vio lence latish a vile; capricious and malevolent Government agent chooses to infilot. Fifty village echools that were doing incsion table good to the Nestorian race hare thus been broken up; the people are forbidden to read the books that have Issued from the mission press; and -enlightened and pious Nestorian ecclesias tics are ordered, on pain of imprisonment and` the bastioado, not;fo enter their own ehrtrohes,: and not even to preach to Individuals in their own houses. -.... Two excellent bishops, Mennen and Elias, who are constantly seeking to raise and improve their people, aro to be deprived of their dlo' cones, over which are to be' placed the two mis erable men mentioned above, whose sole care is to have the melee of gratifying to the utmost their own carnal passions. To these two last everything is subjected, pad all Who do net obey them In all things are to be punished. It is impossible to believe that the Perelan Government, unaided and alone, ban elaborated this clever scheme for the annihilation of the American scission at Gnomish. In all proba bility both lit. Petersburg and Bt. Peter's hovel bad to do with it, and now, in the absents of the British Legation from Persia, and when the evil passions of war Are excited, they find it no diffi cult matter to persuade the POIIIIIIIS to make , short work of It. - - Ton Hammon Dnoterea--Ho keen from the Hamilton papers that the Great> Western Hall way has been stopped by the CooedLan anthori. tioe from pricheding any fartheewith the Bridge, until it bas had the opinion of the most learned, Engineers, Four Engineers have been . soot by the government from Toronto to mate R.l3vam. itsation, reported Meteor. . • . .
