The following morning was warm but still foggy, milling oar ride, with a light wind 'behind as, exceodingly oppressive. We threw off our coats, and soon stripped off vest and cravat; but this, we found, was not enough, and we were obliged to stop to take off our flan nel. Oar horses wore reeking with sweat. At two o'olook the thermometer, in a cool, shady spot, stood at 70°, and the sky was neatly clear. We were very tired and thirety, and one of as suggested that this was the very country and the very weather for mirage. It was hot long after we saw the edge of 'the horizon riding in the dickering host, and groups of tree, stand. leg free in the air, as On island or a point stretches off into the sky of a hot day on the sea coast. Then the trace connected themselves with the land below upon each side, and we eaw a beautiful lake, the water rippling in the sun light. It grow wider and longer, and shortly was like the open sea, with a rioh and !shady shore, extending up, at Intervale, like bays and rivers, into the land. Boon the lakes were com mon bare and there about ne, cram of surface, trees with heavy foliage bending over their bank, to rest in the water. Bad we not been prepared, by a knowledge of the country, we should have been strongly tempted to ride to wards arms of them for a drink of cool water. Later in the day the air became clearer, and a pleasant breeze played upon our -beaks. The mirage gradually disappeared, and we lost it In descending a swell of the , prairie. It was near enneet, with a dull cloud bank in the north. We were still safferir.g with the beat, when one of as said— " See this before as; what is it, fog again or smoke!" "A prairie fire, I think," raid the other. "Probably it ie; bat what Ie this en the bill close by, this Is fog, surely? It must be a norther, listen to that total We must be get tlJg our clothes on or we shall be chilled through." First, a chilly whiff, then s puff, the gram, bends flat, and, bang, it is upon us—a blast that would have taken a top.gallant sail smack out of the bolt ropes, and cold as if blowing name a eel of toe. We galloped to the nearest ravine, sod hurried on all the dealing we could muster. Portunately, tbough our baggsgs was left behind, we hid taken a. supply, having strapped blan kets, Guernsey Attie, and Ganada legging, be- bind our saddles. At nine o'clock the thermometer stood as thin, ty.three degrees, and et seven next morning et twenty-one degrees. A thermometer hanging in Nen-Brannfels showed a fall of slaty degrees in seven hours. These northers upon the open prattles are ex ceedingly trying. The-fierce wind, that accom panies enoh endlen obwp glies them triple effect, especially as they often interrupt warm, relaxing weather. Oura hu come to be a Government of consolidated pdblto PreaMeat Pierce is an Illustration of the utter inability of any one msn to esablieb any policy in this country against the will of the people as o MUM lie has brought all the power of his Administration to bear in a strictly constitution al direction against the Antl-Slavery element. What are the results? On the one Bide, we have the President's earnest and patriotic remon strances, his vetoes, his messages, his patron age, Ms °Metal and private influence; every thing, in fret, he could command within him self. On the other hand, we see the public, will, de -1 velopiog itself throughout the country, in spite of all those restraints. The President'a Cabinet is divided in its policy. The President's , own . appointments In the North turn against himt Ile' fails to rnelte tha Pate of his own party in con vention. His mangos and appeals to his coun trymen only add feel to the flame. His vetoes are got aside in the Senate end the nom. lie goes out of power broken In health, .broken In heart, broken In private fortune. Why? Simply because he attempted to etem the tide of anti slavery. It was too strong for him, too strong for the Democratic' party, and too strong for the Constitntion. Mr. Buchanan Is a prudent man. He has felt very recently the danger of the enemy he most expect to encounter. In the ap pointment of the Cabinet, and in the line of his general policy, he may seek to flank the oppo sition. tine thing le evident hero In Washing ton, this antislavery element, refloated through the Black Republican organization, has already effected the construotion of the now Cabinet. Yawns Sonoomsarrene.-7Senator Douglas Is said to have written a letter from Washing ton to a Democratic- newspaper Chleago, is which he need the following language: "You are to be (Tankeetted'—in other words abolltionixed by intone of abolition sohool teach ers and abolition preachers. And they will do it too, unless , in *vulgar parlance, you 'take the bull y the borne.' I hope that wo Anil be as active sod untiring in the defence of Democtratio principles, as they hare boon in propagating er ror. The resolution should be taken not to sup pea an enemy in your midst to propagate among your children the blackiand hatefal doctrines of abolitionism. The remedyis in your own hands, and the advice, I believe, .le salutary." The allusion here Made is to the benevolent enterprise conducted with no much enemies by Got. 8.41d0 to furnish competent - school teachers to the destitute sections of the West. Mr. Doug las waelimeelf formerly' a Yankee pedagogue, and the Obitago Democrit thus refrelhes his memory on the subjeeit “This comes with ill grace from one who, but a few years ago come to Illinois a young Ver monter, and applied to the Rev. Bsoone.—The well-known WMblngtotocorree• pondent of the Philadelphia Ledger, who le an aothre meutber of the looefooo pasty. thus allndas to the death of Brooks: This sudden demise le a very melancholy co• . ounenee. It is greatly to be regretted he had no opportunity to approach Senator Sumner In a way that might have tended to promote an agreeable exchange of generous sentiment. It was manifestly plain to one ever obeerrant of personal demeanor, that after the tint three or four days of the present erasion of Congress, a decided change wee to be noticed in the aspect of Mr. Brooks. Ile Imagined at first, he would bravely hold up-under his peculiar position—it was too much for his better nature. Be felt his position acetely, "and be became seriously thoughtful in his emit in the House of Repre sentatives. Had Mr. Sumner been io Washing. ton, Mr. D. would probably hare approached him in such a way as would hate obliterated the untoward occurrenee which' happened in the Senate Chamber in the past, year. The time of planting varied from the first of May to. the twentieth of Jane. The amount of seeds produced to the acre in the District of Columbia varied from GO to GO bushels, yielding in many cases a gill to a stalk, The weight of green matured plants to the acre, ha estimated to be from 14,000 to 33,000 pounds. Oa dry indiffer ent soils, unmanured, and fully exposed to the sun during the day, the plants did not attain more than half of theme dimensions. He re marked that both syrup and sugar had been manufactured from the Jules In this country, as well as in France. The auger which he had seen was bath in a crystallizeble and ttem7stal. liuble state, the latter technically known as "grape sugar." Syrup of a superior Quality bad been presented to him from flew Hamp shire, equally as good as that extracted from • the perennial cane. By adopting the usual pro cess in this country of making sugar from the maple, by boiling down tee juice in a single kettle, one would rarely succeed in making a good article from the West lodise mum. In Ca be and elsewhere it was a common practice, in manufacturing 'muscavado' first to cat the canes near the gronod, deprive them of their tops and leaves, convey them Immediately to the mill, mash out thejniee by means of three cast iron or wooden rollers, and cease it to flow to a series of boilers of peculiar construction, to which are applied various degrees of hee.. In the first boiler the juice is raised to a tempera. tura eomeithst above blood heat, and a small quantity of licie.water le added to neutralize the acidity. It is then transferred successively into the other boilers, undergoing different de grees of ebullition, tempering, and other mani pulations, which can only be learned by prao• nee, until it reaches the point of crystalization. From the last boiler it is poured into a recepta cle in which, by gradually coolies, it undergoes the process of granulation. It is next scooped out and panted into unglazed earthen pots, with email apertures in their bottoms, and conveyed to the odripplorticter," where the molaseee, or uncrystallizable portion, fails into a gutter be low and roue into a receiver, preparatory to pat ting It up in casks. As soon as the dripping is completed, which lasts several days, and the eager becomes moderately dry, the pots are carried to large wooden platforms, the erupt emptied out, pulverized by beating, and then packed into boxes or casks for shipment or use. He thought that if this or some similar process were applied to the juice of the Chinese cane in the United States, we might succeed in making' from it a crystallized eager, but, as about one third part is unoryatallizable, it might be ques tioned whether the attempt to separate it would be economical. le was stated that, by means of optical instruments, we may clearly dicta gulch the preponderance of crystallizable sugar of this plant, as wail as that of Indian corn, and that there appears to be some relation be. tween their maturity and the facility with which crystals can be obtained. lie was of the opin ion that this cane contained the greatest amount of saccharine matter mkt: the seeds were is their asitky stage, and that the riot:need of the plies mainly deperided upon a hot sun, a continued summer heat, and a warm, moderately rich soil, but not upon the latitude in which it Is cultiva ted, as had been inferred. From three-fourths to sevenaighthe of the stalk consist of juice, which thrice Iq richness according to the size, vigor, and healthiness of the plant. That taken_ from a cane seventeen feet in height and one inch and a half in diameter, groan In-the Dis trict of Columbia, en the moist-loamy land re ferred to above, yielded only' 14 per cent. of -dry saccharine matter, while that from &stalk about nine feet in height; en inch in diameter, culti vated on light land in Massachusetts, gave 2 per cent. Furthermore, it was assorted that al cohol Of a superior quality and agreeable taste, resembling nom, had been manufactured feom it—a bread-saving crop being thue supplied—and that, if redistilled with grape seeds, It would produce en excellent - brandy. But , a difficulty hail been apprehended. both in the manufacture of engar and alcohol, from the fermentation of the juice In warm weather, owing to the, chart time left for the manufacture. This, however; he thought might be obviated; in a northern climate, by planting the seed sufficiently late to allow its maturity to occur during the time of the light autumnal frosts. He had obearred that the juice did not ferment Where the mean temperature of the day was 46° or 50° F.; but ate greater heat it soon partook of the nature of older, and would doubtless eventually. make an excellent vinegar, 1,600 gallons of whioh; lie thought, might be produced to the acre.. In respect to its nutritive 'properties be cited, Instances of cows which had been fed upon this cane exclusively, giving a diminished quantity:of milk, but of increased viol:nese •of -quality.— When deprived of their pellicles or ooverieg the seed had boon used in Franca in the annulate. acturoof chocolate; the pellicle9hetasolves being a mployed for dyeing silk, =parting, ehades varying from a pole-violet to a rOSO•OirMine. As to the fact of this plant exhausting the soil, Mr. Browne thought there was-no doubt.— Judging from ate analogy to the perennial cane, he believed that at lease half of its ash consists of phosphates, and mere than one•fourth of si lica. lie did not think It advisible to apply to this crop much, if any, stable or other ammoni cal manures, as It would flourish on an indiffer ent soil, by the addition of a moderate quantity of boneduet, phosphatic guano, wood ashes, or poudrette. If thee cultivated, and the crop fed out to the animals on 'the farm, and their men?. returned to the fields on which the plant grew, it could not fall to be a direct and eel:. Domicil mode of restoring fertility to exhausted landd• In conclosion, on being asked for his candid opinion Eto the adaptation of this species of cans to the wants and economy of the United States, Mr. Browne averred that, as a forego crop and a restorer of exhausted lands, more especially thee, of the-Atlanta and Gulf States, where ever the corn plant would thrive, it cannot be surpassed by any other product. It was also his belief that it would produce sufficient eirop, and perhaps sugar, aoholiel, and vinegar; to supply the demands of, the 'whole country; In all attention where the plant would develop its seeds to imilky stags..
