DID MITT ON RAILROAD Inos.—A corns. • pendent of the Philadelphia North dmaieirn says that therein acombination among a certain class of railroad man s by which a huge corruption fend has. been subscribed to effect the repeal, by Congress, of the duty upon railroad iron. The amount subscribed is said to be 10 per ant. on the capital of the roads interested, and the uses to which this Immense fond are to be applied show the estimation In which Congress is held by these operators. The existence of such a combination imperils the iron interests 'of Pennsylvania,; and it is time that the alarm was ralsedj and that the friends of Amerfean in daatry,•and- the friends of the . righta and inte rests of Penzurylvaisia, were upon.their guard to prevent a calamity so deep and far reaching in 14 Consequences. Oao fact which Is stated by the author of the communication deserves especial notice, as a complete answer to the charge frequently made against the iron interest, that it is so feeble as to require the :conelant bolstering up by the government—the feoti that the 'United States Oovermient has granted more acres of the choicest public lands to railroad companies than there flambeau dollars paid into the Treasury from the that Invention of railroads up to the present time. The writer states a yet more pertinent fmot—natnely, that the governmenthas . granted.to a single railroad company in Illinois publicilande that will yield to that company, by their 'sales; the sum of thirty millions of dol. lus-.:more than the government has over re• mired from the duty Paid on railroad iron, and, which iimore than sufficient of itself to build arul, equip that road without requiring a dollar Aries Itn,projeotora and nominal builders. Thus it is demonsfrated that, not the iron interest, lmt tlierailronfl interest has been the epooal object of governthent care and bounty, upon Which has beerrlavished publio gifle and Largesses to en iniantliblo extent. We do not'complain of this. Thesireade are for the common . interest, the 'general welfare, and th 6 mono of tho govern ment 0001 not be .more wisely expended than in their:ilonstreation. But 'slum the railroad interest comes fresh trom these bountifil eup plies, and asks that one great department of our indastrj, which lactose-cam to our prettiest in dependence of foreign power, shall be wholly sacrificed to its inordinate appetite, the public, With one sword, will say, and we trust Con gress'irill say, that the bold demand cannot be granted. The country will be astonished to learn that these companies expect Congress to refund the duties which have been paid on railroad iron during the peat mix years, and to remit nob du ties for all future time. /1113110VI3IDDIT OD WOOTIED ilMilt..9.—On the 14th imit, 'Hr.
