DKPARTMENT - - FRIDAY BlO)ililiirJAN. 29, 1867 , FI3LII . :P/AUCIL-.19! there is a great deal of . trouble experienced lately by the freezing of fire plugs, and the. difficulty of thawing them, we will glee a description of an apparattut used in Philadelphia, Invented lately, for this purpose, and would recommend it to the consideration of all. It was tried in that city the other day, by the Chief Euginerrr of the Water Department The contrivance euzeirts of a bailer and tank, with a band forcing pump and grata percha hose. The fire Is built in the furnace with kindling wood prepared with cemphene, arid steam le thus generated in a few minutes. The - .nut" Is taken from the fire plug and a small hese is screwed in, and the other hose, to which a long branch pipe is appended, is thrust down to the bottom of the plug outside the pipe. The steam, at a preseure of from five to seven potmds to the inch, is nolvjput on, and in a few minutes the toe becomes 'melted and the water lion. This Is ascertained by the cold water rushing from the ping into the boiler. The heat ofthe iron plug end:pipes is so great as to completely dry the straw...which id.renally packed around the pipes of the plugs In the cold season. -, Tee whole appetite's is very portable, a9 d it is noterapensive, white IL IS so effective that frosenving can generally be thawed out ,In a very few minutes.' The ides was first suggireted by Diarahal Murphy, who used a somewhat tftilar contrivance in thawing a frozen hydrant pipe at his own house. Mr. Ogden Improved open_ the Idea first suggested by the Marelusl, and the lenult is a very effective apparatus for the accomplishment of a very important object. Wiumaros, lawara, ()atelier 23, 1856.-- lissom CLANS—Gentlemen: This Is to certify that the mills of your patent owned by the Messrs. Gilpin & Co., and now in fall opera tion in the Brandywine Mills in this city, have fully come up to their expectations, and are all you represented them to be. With one mill we can make sixty barrels of flour in twenty four hours, and a yield of twenty-four and s ball barrels to the hundred bushels of wheat. This, after having given the mills a fair trial, appears to be the average yield from good wheat. Yours respectfully, JOHIPII Plan. Head Miller of the Messrs . . Gilpin & Co. According to the above important and reliable certificate, and the testimony of the numerous purchasers of these valuable mills, each one of these mills will make two and a half barrels of flour per hour, producing a yield of one barrel of dour from four busbelsrand live -rounds of wheat. The mill, including the complete grind ing and bolting apparatus, occupies a space only 25 feet long, 5 feet. wide, and 5 feet high, and reqlres but G horse power to propel it. Messrs. T. & E. & James isf. Clark have one of the felt, ,eized mills in eonetant operation at Ryan's Braiding, ,tio. 21 Fifth street, Pittaltirgh, where they' offer for sale the patent right for many valuable counties and States throughout the Tinton; and also the European patent, which has lately been granted for this valuable inven tion, which in attracting so great attention, not only In the United States, but throughout Eu rope. Salsa amounting to ten thousand dollars have been made within the last four weeks, and males of greater anemias are under negotiation. The Messrs.
