Capitol at Washington. IThey see in appropriation Mlle, front year to year, that large rims aro appropriated for the extension and Improvement of the building, bat they told= nee these amounts in the aggregate, and hare little Idea of the extraordinary rums expended on Items usually costing but little in ordinary buildings. At the late melon of Con gress, $760,000 was appropriated for the tenths nem of the work on the wings, or extension of the Capitol, and $lOO,OOO for the dome over the centre building. The extension of the Capitol was begun July 4th, 1851. The wort has boon diligently pur sued five years. At least three years more will be required to oomplete it, and the aggregate cost will be certainly three times what was es timated. The original estimate for the two wings was $2,600,000. More than $3,600,000 have been already appropriated. The estimate for the dome on the plan of a Moll engineer and arc hit ec t, was $100,000; but it is now ascertain ed that the probable cost will exceed a million and a half. The extension of the winge is built of the finest marble to be found in the United States. The exterior of the old or centre edifice is of 00alle and friable eand-stone. Its walla will probably be taken down and construoted of a material to correspond with the wings. The complete plan of the extended Capitol shows that it will be one of the most beautiful and magnificent edifices in the world. Its length will bo over 800 feet, Its breadth more than 260, and Its height from the foundation to the pinna cle of the dome will be 850 feet. Some of the items of expenditure will look rather extraordinary in tho eyes of some of our Reptiblicnn farmers. For instance, the item of doom. Mr. BALL, Chairman of the Committee of Publio Buildings, complained of the coat of two doors, which he says could have been made at an expense of not over $1,400 each. The su perintendent has expanded $14,000, ten times as much, in procuring suitable model end designs, and the doors will met $OO,OOO. The following items are copied from the elate• meat of Capt. M. C. Mein the Engineer In charge of the work. "Total coat per window for work and materi als, inoluding setting, handling, superintend once, and every expense, $1,689 86. The total oast of window, ns originally designed, was $822, 66. • Thee it appears the windows have been doubled in cost. The increase in not as much doe, Captain Meige says, to any alteration In design as to an alteration in the mode of con struction, and adile," if the object of Congress wee to provide accommodations at the least ex pense, a plain brick building would have been the most appropriate; as they directed the crea tion of a white marble building, in the highest and richest etyle of architecture, I have suppoe ed the beet and most durable construction was desirable.' "Ia answer to the question, how much are the plaster coals for the bronze front door to cost, and how much will be the cost of the doom to be executed from them ? Capt. Melgs replies, the design and plaster casts will cost $11,000; the door, it cast and chased in the Mu nich foundry, $7,000; freight, eay $200; total, $18,200. If executed In this country, the cost of the bronze will be probably somewhat greater. The door which will 'separate the old Represen• tatty° chamber from the corrider of entrance into the South wing and the new Representative chamber will be of bronze. The design and modelling will cost $8,000; the bronze work is estimated at $6,216; total, $14,416. Those of the Baptista at Florence, by Gbibuts, the most perfect and the most celebrated in the world, are entirely of bronze, and It Is proposed to foi ble this the most perfect example. "Mr. Craiford has been paid for the designs and models of the last pediment,North wing, and of the figures ,to go over the Rest door of that wing, fourteeefigures and accessories, $20,000. lie to to receive Tor the designs and models of the Eastern door, North wing, $6,000; Eastern door, South wiing, $6,000; design and model to crown the nee Sable of the Capitol, $8,000; total for fifteen M figires and two d00ra,.52.5,000. "r. Rondo ph Rodgers is to receive for the design and model of one large door, the model to be executed in Italy, , and the castings in this country, $B,OOO. 'Mr. Butler is to re ceive for the design and models for a mantle for the Senate receiving room, $6OO. It is to be executed in bronco and marble here." The floors are also expensive. Some of those contained-within the bullillogprobablyncat more than a comfortable private mansion. The Com mittee rooms will be finished in an admirable manner. -The walls of some of them are finished and delineated with paintings in fresco. That of the Committee of Agriculture has been some time in Else. The designs with which Its wane and ceiling are covered, as well as the manner of their execution, it is said have been greatly and deservedly admired. The finishing of the interior meet cost a great Jest of money. The Poet ORoo buildings are also being extend • ed. Repenfive tastes are also to be gratified here. Capt- Meigs nays the principal gate into the building is an arch, in the ordinary form of triumphal arches, and the span, drill and key atones will be-decorated with sculpture in the usual style of sues principal entrance/. The de. alga embraces a mask of Fidelity, with the usual emblems on the keystone, and winged figures In the spandrils, reproeenting steam and electricity as the genii of the railroad add telegraph. They are nearly completed in marble. -They are smal ler than life size; they will mist, completed, . $B,OOO. In looking over all this vast expendltoro o money on bnildinge intended to lest for ages and to stand as monuments of the oirillzation and grandeur, and wealth of the Republic, two thoughts pr stints themselves. One le, what Is to become o all these buildings, on which so many millio s have been spent, if Fremont it elected Presid nt, as we believe he will he, as in that event our Bnebauier friends threaten to dissolve the Udioo, and Mr.' Fillmore, usurping the place of &Prophet, nays It will be, and Clear ly Intimates he believes it ought to be diesolvedl All we have to Bay is, that if the 'Union cannot =ffl lishment of the principles of the Philedelphin platform, then It is not tworth preserving. We have a higher estimate of Its value and lie sta bility than the supporters of Buchman: We think that the fact that it has stood the chain- tetrad= of Mr. Pierce, which havbeen endorsed by the Cincinnati, Convention, show the it. con eland any thing. One other thought Is, iftile country progresses In wealth, greatness, andju Its westward eaten• eion, u rapidly as a proaent, how long will the seat of Governmenkrecoalti at Washington?
