THE- Two-Swan CANDID/Mt. —We have Just noticed ii&the St. LOMB DCMOCIIIi a curious re• relation coneeralni James Buchanan, which shows clearly the irresistible inclination of that individual to be on both aides of all questions. There are, aa our readers well know, two "democratic' parties in Missouri—the Benton and Ate -Benton, which hate one another with a perfect hatred. In the pending State eleotion they aro, running separate tickets, and they have also eeparate electoral tickets, both pledged for Buchanan. The Waibington Union, true to its mission, has been making war upon the Ben ton branch; and the southern democrats gener ally regard Benton with loathing and contempt. In view of this latter fact, it would teem to have been the policy of Mr. Buchanan to appear to Bide with the general sentiment of the South, and doubtless this was the object of the course pursued by the Washington Union in assailing Benton as a traitor to the party and an enemy to Buchanan; tattiest this course ehoold drive off the Benton men, "old Buck" resorts to the plan of privately assuring them that he eymps thistle fully with them. It was not expected, of course, that these prints assurances would ever be made public; but the bitterness of the con. teal in Missouri has driven the Benton men, in self defence, to fall back upon them as their best reliance. The Dentoeral consequently says "In this Connection we take occasion to say whet we should not have said otherwise, that we have received within the past two days, from the very best and highest authority, the assur ance that Mr. Buchanan was deeply mortified and aggrieved by the coarse of the Washington Union in this respect, and had remonstrated against a repetition of any such articles in a manner that would not fail of its effect. He also his sent hie test:Renews to Col. Benton of his gratitude to hint for' his exertions In bis be half in Missouri, and his regret at the hostility to him manifested by &portion of the Democratic party, but in which be never participated." Here, ; . then, we have Mr. Buchanan, through his orgarii.tlaa. Washington Union, publicly as. sailing MriHehtion 'as a traitor acid an enemy; while agile - IMM° lime privately inuring Col. Beaton of his regard and his regret at the hos tility of. -the Union! These private assurances having been ande.pubilo, Mr. Buchanan stands revealed hilibt true character. Such has been his course from the very hoes he began his political life. Hahn been on both aides of (simint, if net) every important ques tion that ever claimed the attention of the American people. He commenced lee as a-'Federalist, when it was . safe to be eo ; but joined the Democrats whenever federalism began to go down. He denounced the war of 1812, altd the admin istration of Madison for plunging the country into it; but in the end made a feint of volun teering rind shouldering , hianstisiet to help carry it on. (He never served, however.) He printermoed Thomas Jefferson and the founders of the democratic party as "demi gogues;" and in a fair year; joined the party which he denouneed as corrupt and dangerous. He was, lit the early part of ins career, in ba lm of the MAO States Bank, and made it a ground of complaint against did administration of Madison "that it-was basins to that Institution; and be afterwards became a much better anti tank man than idviition ever was. In 1848 lutrepuilisted Squatter Sovereignty, and contended for the power of Congress over slavery in the territories; In 1856 he endorses Squstter Sovereignty and denies to Congress the possessions! any power over the subject of slavery in the territories. The evidence, taken under oath, of the presi deet, Chief Superintendent, Master of Traimpor Win, several Conductors mud other officers, throw.tho blame of the accident wholly on the Conductor of the Excursion Train, Alfred T. Hoppe!. The Engineer 'of the Excursion Train was killed, but the Conductor escaped. The Conductor and Engineer of the down train, both escaped, but the Conductor, Mr. Vanstavoren , committed suicide by taking arsenic. Strange as it may seem he is wholly exhouerated by the evidence of the officers of the Company. The horrible scene must have so completely unsettled hie mind, that he was incapable of reasoning as to M 5 responsibilities. The down rain, of which Mr. Vanstaverezt was Conductor, was running on the regular printed time table, and was nnderno instruotions with regard to the excursion train. He loft GWynned at G o'clock, arrived at Fort Washing ton at 6.16, the proper time. Not finding the excursion train, as was expected, the presump tion was it was out of the way on come other siding, as it should have been according to the Instructions. The excursion train left the Muter Street Depot at ten minutes put five, and wan due at Fort Washington at 6; 1. e. fifteen minutes be fore the down train would arrive there. This fifteen minutes was allowed for any loss of time or inacoutacies of watches, full enough time for a distance of only about 12 miles. If Fort Washington could not be made by 6.16, then the . excursion train was directed to beout of the way of the regolar train. The excursion train was delayed by a slippery track and a heavy load, until it was evident to the conductor that he could not reach Fort Washington in time, and he consulted with the person assisting him about going on a siding at Edge Hill Station, but ender some hallucination of mind he concluded to go on and make Fort Washington, although he knew ho would be on the thaw of the regular down train. At the time of the collision it was 18 minutes past six, 3 minutes after the time when he should have been out of the way of the regular 'train. Mr. Hoppeln excuse is, that be thought that the down train bad orders to wait fifteen minutes on him, although his own written instructions were to be out of the way of the down traits. It seems singular how an old and experienced conductor could com mit so fatal an error. Mr. Koppel has been ar reeted and held to ten thousand dollars bail.
