The Falls of St. Anthoap• SILVIS CiZZIL, 08 miles above St. Paul, MIXIMBOTA. June 24, 1856. DIAS-, I have made a aloe, examination of the Falls of St. Anthony, that I might be able to give you a pretty accurate description of tbete, and some idea of the practicability and pro bability of their being latproeed no that boats may pees them, and they be no longer the head of navigation on the Misolsoippi. z i The anti All, from the head of the “saok" to where o ats can eully, and sometimes do, ran, 1373 t; the length nearly I} miles, divid ed as follows: Fe= the head of the suck to the perpendicular fail 400 yards, fall 15 feet. In tide portion the bed of the river la solid rook, the greater part of it smooth, with a gradual des cent, down which the water glides smoothly, but with amazing rapidity. A little more that; • hundred yards above the main fall the water strikes • comparative level, where it is deeper. The reaction caused by the change of grade Wows up a heavy wars or breaker, which ex tend/nearly across the river. Thence the water passes on to the main fall In a rather gentle current. The perpendicular fall Is 18 feet, divided into three nearly equal parts by two muse, of rook a few rods la extent, over the tops of which the water breaks when high. For three hundred yards below the perpendi cular fall the water is very rough and rapid, pitching and breaking over the rooks, and lashed into foam. The fall In this distance Is 30 fest. In the remainder of the distanoti—nearly a mile —lO feet. To this point boat, can easily ran at any stage of water. It le all a militate about St. Pant being the head of navigation. A few years ago almost every boat ran to Felt Snel ling, ten miles above St. Paul, and six below the falls, and they are now about putting on a line of b oat, to run to that point. Thebanks, for some distance below the main fall, are solid and perpendicular rocks, from sixty to eighty feet bleb, on both des of the liver, bat on the Minneapolis or n th side they ' do not extend far down. On th t side, at what may be called the head of eigation, nearly a mile inlay the perpendicular fall, th ere is a strip of bottom land some 5f aridity yards in width, which becomes wide as It goes up, and ascends in a uniform e for 800 yards, where It attains the height o the river above the Book. From that point to-t e perpen dicular fall, 750 yards, there is a a p of low land, 100 yards to width, and a the same distance from the bluff along the 11 r, through which port of the river evidently flowed at one time, which is In no place more then ten feet higher then the river above the sack, and some two hundred yards of it--at, and Immixfleetly below', the main fall, where the bluff breaks off —the unto level For 800 yards above the main fall, the bank is thirty het high, (the level of the eanounding country;) but there the bluff trends back from the river, sad for the remain ing distance, two hundred yards, the had is but ten feet high. This brings as above the bridge, and above the head of the nook. lied the pound been formed for the purpose, It could hardly have been made more favorable for the cutting of • canal around the Palls. The only heavy work to the whole distance to in the 800 yards above the main fall, and thin would be side-cutting. I have made • rough proximate estimate of the amount of excavation and stone•worknecen taq to make a meal fifty feat wide sad six feet deep, and of the.probsble cost of the Whole. work. The excavation would not los more than one-third rook: the remainder vend, and sand end pent This rookie the best building stone they have hers, and enough could be token out of the out to do all the stone-work. Excavation, 400,000 yards, at 76 (lents Feria:l, $300,000 Els looks. of • little over 12 teat lift esoh—walls aO6 felt long, 20 high, sad 8 thlok—ln round mambas, 1100 perches esch, or 6,00 in all, at $4 per perch . 26,400 Gates, &G.,. 10,000 Total, $336,400 The tiler shove the Palle le navigable all summer for boats of light draught, than never being leas than three and • half to four feet of water in the eboaleat planes for the ant alsty, and I don't know but I might say one hundred mile". Some tell me that, at • very trifling ex pense, by removing a few rooks. It could be nn• deed navigable nearly to the head, as it only lows In breadth, tot in depth, as you mend.— The water is nearly as low now as it ever gots, and yet there are two clumsy boats, drawing throe and three and a ban feet when empty, now running. The country through which the Mississippi flows above the Bells Is one of the most basal fel, healthy and fertile in the Union, aud Is des- • tined, in a few years to be one or the most thickly settled' and the greatest grain-growing section.. The lumber trade on this river is large now, and is more than doubling yearly. Four millions of feet of loge have passed down this spring. . Ware-Powsz.—Ortst. as is the er-power et the Falls, it Is inadequate to the mend; and for sawing purposes, the thief tmeMees hare, ail available sites are. already :takes up,. and no place is left whore logs, tan,be atipped, or se cured If they. were stopped, • But if a canal, such I have spoken of, were mad., with an ad ditional outlay . of $6000,..a race-or canal could be carried along the top ,of the • bluff, which is just on a level with the,,water.abole the Falls. from above the first lock down. half a mile; and as the ground Is very favorable, as many mills ait could stand along .It could be driven by % Bat this la not all Below the canal the ground la also favorable for aecniderable distance mid by tapping the canal a very great amount of pow er could be obtained without any additional ter pens.. And as the water to the canal below the ant look would alwayi beef the same level,' and the ground-is most favorable, basins could be male indolent to contain acres of loge, by, excavating a little at the upper, and throwing up a small embinkment at the lower end, any where below the upper lock. . - Vast as Is the wetter-power,. I. beano the greater part of it would be taken ins few years.
