Mr. Geyer pee : nouncod an eulogy upon the deceased and after adopting the tuntit resolutions the Berate ad journed. Homan —Mr. Lindley announced, the recent death of h e colleague, Mr. Miller, of Missouri, who on account of eickness, had not taken hie seat this session, and spoke in exalted terms of his public end private character. Mr. Ilum phrey Marshal pronounced a glowing eulogy on the deceased, who was the companion of his childhood. Tho usual resolutions of rem:eet and condolence were then adopted and the Mese ad journed. WAIIIIINGION Cu - r, May 22. Immediately after the adjournment of Congress to-day, while Mr. Sumner was still in the Senate Chamber, Mr. Brooks of South Carolina. entered and ap proached Mr. Sumner,- accusing him of libelling South Carolina, and his 'grey-headed relative, Mr. Butler. Re then struck Mr. Sumner with his cane, and Mr. Sumner fell. Mr. Brooks then continued to repeat his blows, until Mr. Sumner was deprived of the power of speech.— Mr. Sumner was taken up and carried to his room. It has not been ascertained whether his injuries are serious or not. When the attack was made Mr. Sumner called for help, bat no one interfered until Mr. Brooks closed the assault. Some eye-witnesses say that Mr. Brooks struck Mr. Sumner as many as fifty times over the head. Mr. Sumner was sitting in his arm-ohair when the assault was made, and had no oppor tunity to defend himself. Tho opinions on the subject are 'contradiotory; many applaud the act, while others denounce it as a cowardly at tempt to heat down freedom of speech. It will undoubtedly cause a great debate In the Senate to-morrow. Mr. Brooks was arrested. The complaint against Mr. Brooks was made on oath of Wm. Y. Leader who appeared before Justice Bollingsbead. Mr. Brooks was held to ball in $5OO for his appearance to-morrow after noon. Mr. ttnmner has two severe bat not dan gerous wounds on his band. Mr. Brooks' cane was shattered in many pieces. Wasuzutrroit Cm, Shy 22.—The treaty be tween the Drated States and Dominica has been received at the state Department abd only awaits an opportunity to be considered. It is said that there are no peculiarly striking tea tares in it but, that it merely oontairis the usual provisions relative to Commerce and amity. The oorrespondence between Meseta. Clayton end Crampton, relative to n question of veracity between them, regarding certain possessions In Central Amex Ma, is still in progress. The lat ter, it is said, has enlisted, the services of a distinguished American friend, in order to com promise the difficulty.
