accomplices have been arrested. Yesterday at
tentoon, Mr. John Kelly, passenger agent of the
0 & P. 'Railroad Co., sent for officer Hague,
. having seen two men whom he suspected waiting
for the afternoon train to start. When the et
''Leer arrived upon the ground, he recognized
them to be Eoglieh thieves pointed out to him in
Philadelphia last spring. They recognized him,
and started for Pittsburgh. Hague followed
them to the Perry Hotel, where a third one join
ed them—end he then sent for officers Hamil
ton, Wells and Maxwell, of the Mayor's police,
with- whose aid he toot the three into custody.
. They, of course, were thunderstruck at the
charge, but made no resistance.
When taken before the Mayor, they gave their
-names as J. Wilson, J. W. Brown, and C. Gra
ham, and were starched. On Nelson were found
$212; on Brown $lBl and on Graham $61,49,
In gold and notes. Col. Clemens was sent for,
and upon arriving at the police office, identified
Graham as the one who had robbed him. The
gold pieces resembled the coin stolen from him.
- He also identified the others as being in Brown's
company.
The defendants made statements to the Mayor,
• and sulatorthed to them. ' Each was heard sep
arately. All pretended to h vo but little no.
quaintacce with each other, and stated they had
arrived by the train from Alliance on Monday
afternoon. Brown was a "general dealer," and
resided in Buffalo; Graham a eegar maker of
Buffalo and Witten - a butcher and resided in Hal
timore.

last meeting, to instal, on the second Tuesday of
Soy, ReT. Jobs C. Steel as pastor of the Firet
A. R. Church, Mond:eater, proceeded to dis
charge the -duty yesterday morning et ten
o'clock.
. Oar readers aro doubtless aware that an In.
tenae . feeling exists in the congregation, as to
who should succeed the late pastor, Rev. One.
D:Archittald, Rev. Samuel Kerr or Rev. John C.
Steele. The meetings held on the subject were
characterized by a most violent spirit, which ex
ploded in language disgraceful to any set of men
—much more to church members. At a regu
lar meeting, Mr. Kerr was elected ; hetet a sub
acqueut one Mr. Steele was chosen. Dr. Pressly
refused to allow the women the privilege of vo
ting at the latter meeting, and moderated the
call for Mr. Steele.
Over two-thirds of the member! of the congre.
gotten are opposed to the Rev. John C. Steele,
alleging that his election was obtained by unfair
means, and that the moderating of the call by
Dr. Pressley, was irregular, bud sprung upon the
congregation. The matter wan up before Pres•
.bytery, last month, and the call wan decided
regular by a vote of sixteen yeas to fifteen nays ;
Mr. Steele hitaself voting in the affirmative.

The Court convened at nine o'clock Jester-
day morning, when, lifter the transaction of some
unimportant business in the Circuit Court, Judge °
Irwin proceeded to

His Honor briefly reviewed the testimony of
Cooper, the principal witness against the defend- .
ant, deolaring that it had been contradicted in
two very Important particulars, by showing that
he was the principal and the defendant the dupe,
aid by disproving his assertion that he did not
went to borrow money, and showing that he did
enter into the business of baying bad money on
his own account. Being thus contradicted in
two very important points, his testimony fell to
the ground.
The Court then proceeded to review the re
maining testimony, and concluded by saying that
if a doubt etill remained in their minds,, they
tatnit hear in mind that the prisoner bore on ex
cellent character. If the doubt still remained,
that doubt should of course be thrown in favor"
of the defendant

the defendant, end the Jury, therefore, after en
absence of about five minutes, returned into

ernment re. Catharine Ellis, charged with ma
king counterfeit coin of the Plaited States. She
and Mason, who was convicted last week, were
arrested together, and the evidence elicited in

"Swiss -Facrroav ROBIIED.—A gentleman
named 8. Mitchell appeared before Mayor
Bingham yesterday, and made Information, sta
ting that the woolen factory of Mr. Covode, in
Covodesville. Westmoreland county, was entered
on Friday night, and ten pieces of satinet, valu
ed at some $l5O, were carried off. The com
plainant further states that he believes the rob
bery was perpetrated by a man named Marge
troy, who bad made hie escape, and he was in
formed came to this city. A warrant was made
out for the arrest of the accused.

troy and a man named Eli Stotler on the wharf
Isle in the afternoon, wheeling five pieces of the
stolen goods. They were both taken into ens
tody.
