In some spec ulations on the subject, the Philadelphia Edger expresses the opinion that peace will at once cause a vast expansion of European commerce, imfileient to supply American ships to the full. Large Investments will be made in all the secu rities of this country, because the capital will not now be wanted in the destructive pursuit of war. We may look for an expansion of the London money market, followed, of course, by a corresponding expansion here. It will be com paratively easy to borrow money for railroads. Large permanent investments will, In fact, be made in all stooks, and the capital and industry of other nations be Milted on our soil. The tide of emigration will probably set in again with all its former vigor, except so far as the gold mines of Australia may divert it to those more lucrative regions. There will be men to spare as well es means. In the lost two years, more than half a million of men have probably been destroyed, either by war, or the sickness, fatigue and distress growing cut of it. This year there will be fully a million of men in Europe let loose from the various pursuits connected with the maintenanoe of the war, to enter on the peaceful engagements of Industry. This must give us no small share of the Increased emigra tion. Than there seems then every reason to expect a season of greatly Increased activity in every department of industry. The only danger is of all this being pushed for purposes of spec ulation quittibeyond what tenth and reason will justify. This would of course soon produce a reaction. At present everything indicates a healthy and cautious enlargement of business. There Is we think no finer proof of the sound ness of our Institutions in this country as a whole, than this; that the most opposite conditions of the world around tis, only seem in one way or, other to develope new sources of advantage and prosperity to us. With snob encouragement for enterprise a nd capital, none need be desponding or idle. Pa tient and honest industry will not only secure a livelihood, but a comfortable competency. In this prosperity Pittsburgh will largely partici pate. At the present there is a healthful acti vity in every branch of business, and none can complain for the want of remunerating .employ meet. Money is plenty, business is active, and, there is a steady demand for our manufactures. / There is a great deal of building going on, in the city and vicinity, and the place was never so full of people. The Assessor of Water rents informs uethat every tenement is crowded, and that if a census was taken now it would exhibit a large Increase of population. Pittsburgh is not subject to spasmodic fluctu- stions of prosperity and adversity. Her pace is even, and generally onward—never backward. It has its periods of acceleration, and of slower progress, but taking one year with another there is a tare and steady advance. Dzstocaanc Actom.—The democratic papers, generally, are striving to make a great deal out of the shooting of the mock Sheriff Jones, in Kansas. To read them, one would suppose that the loss of a human life causes them the most intense agony, and that their concern does not grow out of the fact that Jones was on their Bide, but results from the tender regard they have for the protection of personal rights. It is delightfully refreshing to witness from them - such a horror of assassination and to awful a some of the gulls of murder. Bat how comes it, we might Bak our dear, in nocent, indignant editorial friends of the demo cratic preen, that this agony and horror never was manifested by them before. For eighteen long months, now, ruffianism and lawleameas have beenrifo in Kansas. PHILLIPS was mob bed, plundered and beaten for his political apin. lens Dow was murdered by-Coamas for being a Free Boiler. Bev. Mr. Cultu was stripped, beaten and set adrift in the Mississippi for preaching an unpalatable sermon. Unarms's Press was thrown Into the near for defending the right of mileage. BRANSON wan seized and threatened for having Free Soil boarders at his table. Pastes office was torn down and robbed because Its editor upheld the laws. Voters were etabbed and fired upon at the. Pelle. Judges were dragged by violence from their seats, and peaceable Clergymen maltreated and robbed.— BOMBS - was killed, without a word or act of provocation, by one of the United BMW otfi aisle in that territory, that pet of the adminis tration deliberately shooting him down in cold blood: And last, but not least, poor Baows was waylaid, abused, tortured, and literally killed mob by Inch, by a horde of outlaws, for no other offence than being a Free State man. Yet, to all these .crimes and assaninations" the democratic press has been blind and deaf, and dumb. Sometimes it has attempted to justify them, sometimes it has denied their existence It has never condemned or deprecated a single one. Bat now, when one of the perpetrators of them encounters the bloody hand, the •ad ministration press cannot find weeds to express its honor and indignation! We must be par doned for suspecting • zeal against crime, so partial and unjust in its development. When the cruel murders of Dow, Barber and Brown are condemned and avenged, we shall believe our contemporaries in earnest In calling for similar condemnation salt vengeance upon the assallantoof Jones. PrIDIDIIDOII AND CHICAGD.--Tha near conolu slim of the treaty of consolidation of the groat direot line of Retiree& between Pittsburgh and Chicago, and the almost absolute certainty that it will be successfully consummated, is a subject of much gratulation. to the people of this city. No event of late years is of more direct Impor tance to our prosperity. It will mare to Pitts burgh, beyond all petadventore, the best and leading route between New York and Philadel phia and Chicago. It will place Pltteburgb most certainly and beyond all competition per manently on a great through route from the . East to tho West and North West. It will be the only route at present : in existence, or in prospect, that will he free from the armoyancos of changing oars, and checks, and missing con nections. The oars will run directly through from•Pitteburgh to Chicago, whereas on all the ---- other lines there ate frequent change. It re moves every vestige of danger from the comp.. titian of the North Western road, for who would • change from a shorter route, with only one change, and that at Pittsburgh, to another that would have merit? We stall await the an. nouneement of the completion of the treaty of consolidation with confidence and pleasure. gerAll 01t?l:tanks are In a highly governs condition, as will be 8e.012 by the dividends an nounced to•day. And we may add, they are m safe as prosperom. No eater or better ooduoted banks can be found In the country. They enjoy a high repatation at home and abroad, and they richly deserve it. "Tura OLD DOTABD."—Such is the term which the Pittsburgh Post applies to Fssacis P. Br.oeo, because he bail felt to be his duty to support the Republican canoe. Gen. JACKSON, wbo know Blair better than any other man living, in a letter to him, almoet the last be ever wrote, sald: "This may be the last letter I may be able to write you ; but live or die, I am your friend, (and never deserted one from poliry,) and leave• my papers and reputation in your keeping: As far as justice is due to my fame, I know you will shield it. I ask no more. I rest upon truth, and require nothing but what truth will mete for me. All my household join roe in kind wishes for your health and prosperity, and that of all your family ; and that you may triumph over all enemies. May God's choicest blessings be bestowed upon you and yours through life, is the prayer of your sincere friend, P. P. Blair, Esq. ANIMAS JACKSON." Whose opinion is of the most value, General Jackson's or the Pittsburgh Post Ttm PRESIDENOT.—We copied some days since an extract from an article published in the Ash tabula Sentinel, attributed to the pen of Hon. SOSIIVA R. GIDDINGS, which opposed the nomi nation of McLean or Fremont by the Republican Convention- Mr. Giddings, in a letter of April 14th, denies the paternity of the article in ques tion, and says that he has not expressed an opin ion for or against any man, and does not Intend to do so. "I stand pledged," he says, "to sup port the Philadelphia nominee, if he it openly committed to our policy." He closes his letter as follows: "Our candidate most command support be cause his principles are known to be right, and tor for the reason that his friends don't know whether they are right or wrong. Let Judge McLean, or Col. Fremont, or say other man spoken of, he the nominee because of hie adhe sion to these principles, and he will be elected; without such adherence, I apprehend defeat most await him." The charge made in the Springfield American ‘ against Col. Fremont, of being e Catholic and itlareholder, is thus met by the Ron. C. C. Phaffee, American Republican member of Con gress from the 10th Massachusetts District: /loess or REPISMATATIrES, Washingtoc, D. C., April 23, 1836. To the Editor., of the Spangfield Republican : The following note I Bent to the American on the 6th inst., and again on the Bth. Not see ing it in that - paper, I conclude they do not in tend to publish it; and RI it is a simple act of justice on my part to correct the misrepreseota don, I ask you to publish it : " To the Springfield Daily _American " I notice in your paper of the ith inst., you call John C. Fremont a "Catholic and sharehold er." This is simply untrue. • Col. F. is a mem ber of the Protestant Episcopal Church, is not a alaveholder, and intsiterJu opposed to the further ezlension of gamy. " Respectfully yours, C. C. Ca/SITE " NEIN CASTLI AND DARLINGTON RAILROAD.—The election of Directors for this new road takes place In Darlington to-day. The letters patent have been rewired, and a corps of engineers ore already on the ground for the purpose of pee. paring the route for location This is a very Important link, which will unite the Obio and Pennsylvania with the Cleveland and Motioning Railroad, and secure the best possible means of access to the customers of Pittsburgh in the Masoning Valley. Ws take the following from the Olean Journal: "We learn from returned raftemen that there has been an unuanal amount of "staving" be tween Warren and Pittsburgh thin spring. This side of Warren the losses and detentions from this cause hare been light and trifling. kFlusmorits Nrws. —The President sent 1.11P14- sage to Congress, on Friday, embracing tke nor. respondence of the Postmaster General with the Panama Railroad Company, relative to the com pensation for carryinethe mails, the latter claim ing a greater rate than has been hitherto allow ed. The Depart.neut offered 18 cents per pound, but the company Moist on 22, which would make for the year ending in March last nearly $1::8,- 000. The Postmaster General says he must unwil lingly yield to the 132005 t and exorbitant demand rather than risk the consequences which might follow the execution of thi3 Company's throat of throwing down the contract for carrying the mails. The line to Nicaragua being withdrawn, and the route to Panama being the only direct and expeditious channel of communication be tween the Atlantic and Pacific, the President en dorses the Postmaster's recommendation that the latter be authorized to contract with the Panama Railroad Company for the conreyance of the mails across the Isthmus, nt a price not exceed ing $BO,OOO per annum. Also fora semi-month ly conveyance of the M9il9 from New York and New Orleans to San Francisco via Nicaragua, al ternately, at regular laterite's with the present line via Panama, at a tam not exceeding $200,- 000 per annum. The total number of land warrants leaned on dez the law of March, 1855, is nearly 127,000, requiring upwards of fifteen millions of acres.— The number of claims received is 245,100. Up wards of 14,000 warrants for 1,700,000 acres were issued during the month of April.
