In Baltimore and thio - ughont this State there baa been an almost unanimous responve to the Issue raised by the nomination of Mr. Fillmore, and that response will be evidenced next Fall in • larger majority than Maryland hail ever given for • Preeidential candidate.—Batt. AMT. The Fillmore papers claim that be will carry Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Tennessee ; but where-is - the Northern State which he will carry? In New England he has been rejected by the State Connell of his own party in every State where there was en orgenisatiore In New York he is opposed with bitterness by the State organ of the party, and hie support will dwindle down to the Silver• Grey Faction. He has no earthly chance there. In New Jersey one branch of the American party hail rejected him, and the indications are that the other will do likewise when it meets. There Is nothing to hang a hope upon in that State. Hie most ap plies supporters do not claim Penneylvania.— Hie friends in this State are a mere faction. Ohio repudiates him with almost entire unanim ity; and so does Michigan, and Indiana, and Illinois, and Wisoonzie, and lowa. lie bee not a gholit of a chance in one of these States— When, therefore, the Baltimore American epeaks of the nomination se "poenseceing inherent strength,' an 4 as 'destined to reach the maturity of seincess,' It is itself deceived, or designs to deceive Its readers: Fe do not doubt there is a strong Fillmore feeling in Balillnere and Ma ryland, There was in 1852, when Mr. Fillmore was a candidate before the Whig Convention, and snob was the chagrin felt by hie friends in that State, when Gen. Scott was proclaimed es the Whig candidate, that they resolved to defeat him at ail hazards. "Fillmore or Pierce," "role or tutu," were their watch words. They failed in nominating Fillmore, and they took their re -Tense by giving their State to Piereel They now have their favorite again, and can give him their vote if they choose, but they will find ao free State ready to reward their treachery of 1852. We care not how many Southern Mates go for Fillmore. ,The mcre the better, as this will divide the pro-slavery vote. We are confi dent he will not receive en electoral vote north of Maryland. Fsox Katiats.—The arms stolen at Lexing ton, .Mo. were not the U. 8. arms, as alleged, logit private property. It is stated in Eastern presses, however, that the looks for the rifles were sent over land, so that the rifles are of no me to the thieves. The St. Louis Republican details the whole history of the disgraceful robbery. The rifles were in the cue of a New England man who was along with them, on the Arabia. From a note written to his mother, which was dropped in the eabin, and carried by the finder to the Captain, it was first discovered that the rifles were on board. Capt. Einem—that is the name of the man whose infamous sot we have to re late—instead of handing the note back to its author as any bonnet man would -have done, kept it, and read it aloud to the assembled pas senger' in the social hall! Measures were in stantly concerted, with the Captain's approba tion, for taking the rifles from their rightful owner, and on the arrival of the boat at Lex ington this was dose. We can ooncelve of nothing baser than this course of Capt. Shaw. It was an cot of deliber ate tre a chery to one who had confided himself and his property to his care. Wei hope that all persons shipping freight to Eames, exci.all free State emigrants going up Missouri will avoid the steamboat Arabia, so long as Capt. Mom is her commander, as they would a pestilence; and that they wili follow biro with their indignation to whatever boat he may be transferred. Tmetrisors or rue COLD Wrsras.—We - foid, on pcunineour peach trees, that much of the wood at the last year's growth Is winter-killed: The destruction is more extensive then we bad anticipated. As the growth was very beery last year, and the wood mot well ripened, the destruction we think will be found considerable, varying in different !mantle,. Out trees are three yeses old from the bud. We would advise severe pruatri in ell asses, as the fink buds are killed where thswood is not, and the wood of last year's - growth will not, coneevently, bear fruit r liereeller. We think it will be found that the extreme cold, following a wet stammer, has proved very destructive to trees and shrubbery, and we would recommend to growens to make careful observations of the effects pioduised in different betides, and on different Plants, sod note them for the benefit of the - publio. We glean from his answers the following facts. He owned the American Museum, in New York, for about fourteen yens, and sold it in Novem ber last to Means. Greenwood and Butler for $24,000. He gave $2,000 for it. He has now no interest In it whatever. He never owned the Museum building; it belongs to the widow Ind daughter of Francis Olmsted. In June last he considered himself worth $500,000 above all .11561116e5. His estate was chiefly in Bridgeport, Conn. It consisted mostly in building lots, houses, manufactories, decks, etc. The mort gages on that property amount to betweens2oo,- 000 and $BOO,OOO. The appraisers appointed by the Court have appraised the property at considerably less than the mortgages upon it,' and he does not suppose the property will sell for t es much as it le mortgaged, and that thus $400,000 will be eaoriBced and lost I He glee, the following account of his implication with the Jerome Company* balks month of Julielast, from representa tions made to me byAhe Jerotnes and by the Cashier of the Few Haven County Bank, in writing, I was induced-to contract to indorse and accept Jerome paper for an amount a little Over $lOO,OOO. I did that and. continued to do it, as I supposed, for renewals, until I found at lakt to my utter amaketnene that my name was On their: paper to the amount, as they say, of $464,000; though, as most of the paper was signed in blank, I do not know of my own per sonal it ewledge that there Is not a million of dollars against me. The Jerome' called on me In December tact to raise them $lOO,OOO in cash by mortgaging my estate, they agreeing to pay me within twelve months, and to pay all costs and mailings witioh I should be obliged to make by the operation. With this intent I borrowed over $BO,OOO for them in the shape or bonds of various States, towns, and counties; but upon having a business friend investigate their af fairs he found them bankrupt, and informed me that I was ruined beyond all hope. I then In despair 'offered the Jerome creditors $lOO,OOO If they would liberate me from all liabllitiei on their paper, although my counsel informed me that I was not legally bound for that amount. This they found Impracticable. I was then com pelled to cell the bonds at a lots of some $BO,- 000, in order to pay my personal debts. I also paid and secured certain liabilities for the Cloak Company to the .imoant of $70,000 or $BO,OOO. My hands are now tied, my property shipped from me, and my power to do business is paralyzed and destroyed." Mr. Barnum stated further that previous to his endorsement for the Jeromos his liabilities were about $806,000, and that he veinal his property at $BOO,OOO. His property consisted of real estate in Connecticut, New York and Villliamsburgh. His Connecticut property is mortgaged for more than if will bring, and the rest of his real estate was In the hands of as signees to secure confidential debts. Mortgages to the amount of $141,600 existed on Ida New York property before the assignment. His fur niture, plate, and pictures at Iranistao, which cost him $lO,OOO, he had sold for $2,000. The only assets he had in his possession at present, were $81,600 Crystal Palace mortgage bonds, 678 lots in Cypress Hid Cemetery, and some smaller and equally valueless claims. Such is the history of the complete failure of the great showman. He humbugged others, and ends at last the victim of rogues sharper than himself. There is a moral in this more ialuablelhan his auto-biography can afford. Frei re AMILAND. —The large Woollen factory in Ashland, Ohio, was destroyed by fire on,Batur day evening, the Bth inst. Por many years he bad been chief editor of the New York Christian Advocate and Journal. It is not our duty, nor is this the place, to Bey tether in that position our deceased friend esti.** all his readers in the ditionsilan of the Important ques tions which have agitated the Methodist Church. AU acquainted with the course of that paper will, however, we think, admit that be displayed great ability in his editorial writings; while we know thaSthe motives which actuated him were such as became a Christian man, and had it,• gird to the welters of the Church of which he was so prominent a member. We may be allowed to speak of his last sick- IMO. Although comparatively short, it was severe, yet he never murmured or complained. His was a composers that we have seldom seen in like conditions. It was our privilege to speed a part of that Sunday with him. No glcom or doubt muted upon him, He preened but mind in all its vigor, and looked calmly upon the rehire as he did benignly upon the present. To his fetidly the loss will be irreparable.
