But soon all the obi ennpume return=the beetle fe ver and night-sweats, the cough and expector ation of pus, increased frequency of the pulse, and loes of the newly recovered testi and strength: Now, you would ask, la this t The reason is easily understood--Consomption is canoed by tobercles—theie sin prodiced by catarrh or sore throat or bronchitis—brimpure air; or dust, or Irritation of some kind in the air-totes of the . ' large. This bribe:in is kept up for I long time ', before tubercles bogie, to form; but, wow .or later, a fresh cold, or some greaterirritation than usual, causes their rapid deposition. • Boon the cold disappears, or the Irritation is withdrawn, land tubercles cease to form. Those formed bow ' ever, remain, and gradually develops themselvek. After a few months the lungs are again exposed in some manner to irritation, when a further de posit of . tubercles takes pl ace, and in another part of the lungs. ' As the tubercles are not deposited at the 'same time, they do not all soften at the same period, but in successive crops, as they 'IMO formed. When they have softened down lute "mato," and are being expelled, tthe patient has fever' end perspiration ; his appetite becomes poor, and he loses flesh and strength. But as soon as the gest crop Is , thrown off, all these symptoms van ish, sad he continues to improve until the second' mop is ready for Impubion, when he again re lapses. Now, at every so terning of triberolea,W" part of the lung is hroken down into a cavity; hence, as the lungs become gradually destrojed, , the body beam:tea gredually wasted—each attack leaving tbe pcar invalid weaker than the one which preceded it. During these periodic ire provemeets, nostrum, and villainotui compounds of every description, obtain credit for 'effecting the change which sltes plice, While; in real i ty, they, but interfere w ith the praiser action of nature. A great difference in the disease grows out of the constitution, of the patient,— whether it be weak 'morel:wit and out of the cause which prec. duces it ;—whether this be impure air or sedan- tory confinement, the breathing of &dusty armee- phers,or a localthrenie inflammation of some part of the 'Anima of respiration—era coltarrA, • sore *oat or breashitie. • • . - To render these distinctiobs more. intelligible, • I shall divide Consumption into figs kinds, Ws— Chronic Consumption. • Acute.? Galloping Consumption. Febrile Consumption. , Consumption of childhood. • Latent Consumption. , . The Cnaolno,' or common form of Cinsnmption, generally begin* with a slight dry cough. It was probably the frequency' of cough preceding the dimes that led the ancients to believe that cough was the cause rather thep the effect of Consump tion. This cough may continue for several months or years without any other symptom. It is scarcely a cough; 'but rather a "hack." Now, the cause of this slight cough is the presence of Wades in the lungs ; end if the patient were to die suddenly-of any other disease, or from ate injury, we-should find the lunge filled -with fine tubercles. It is common, on examination after heath, to find the lungs of patens dying•of fevers and intissitiationa, stuffed with tobeseles, and this, too, when in health; the existeztoe of Consump tion had not even been suspected. Many of those friends with wham we are in daily intercourse, and whom we regard as really healthy,, are thus earryleg about In their lunge the e aementrOf their own destruction. Caesium:ma 'begins differently in different oases. A man, apparently In perfect health, has sn, attack of catarrh °rigor* throat, and when this subsides it leaves the dry hacking cough be fore alluded to. Not emfrequently a spitting of blood is the first symptom ; this may be only a 'died streak in the mucus, or it may be colisklar able, and of a bright red color, In many cases Consumption sets in after "Wilt dud fever," and these aver with almost' the regularity of Vex In odors we - have a of heat in the palm of the bands and soles of the feet, or a Au* on the cheek. Many persons mistake the fever and chilliness which occur in the early stage of•Con gumption for intetmitteSt fever. As the disease progresses, peigieratieser occur, generally toward morning ; and are often eo profuse as to drench the sheets, and area the bed. . •s• • ' The stonweek is nest much disturbed in tit* early stages of Chronic . Consumption. It is by no means uncommon for theappetite to continue umerially pod until after Diarrhea sets in, when it generally becomes cspricioni and poor. In females, after fever clears, the monthly oldness Ii almost always suppressed, and•it is common for the Cough -and • Dip, sae in the Lungs to be iscribed to this isiwywkwify.
